Abstract

Mycotoxins are secondary metabolites of molds that have adverse effects on humans, animals, and crops that result in illnesses and economic losses. Aflatoxins are toxic, carcinogenic, mutagenic, teratogenic and immunosuppressive by-products of Aspergillus spp. that contaminate a wide range of crops. Disease outbreaks due to the consumption of con-taminated food and feedstuff are a recurring problem worldwide. Hence, creating awareness among consumers, scientific community, government ageneies and inactivation of aflatoxin production is of great importance for food safety. This review is focused on importance of botanicals and their products in management of aflatoxin production, the role of government ageneies, and scientists goal towards farmers in future are of interesting matters. This review is focusses not only to ex-plore the availability of powerful botanicals and detection methods for aflatoxins but also problems of scientific community, transforming this technology to farmers’ level to pave the way for future research. This review will also serve to fill the existing gaps in our knowledge with regard to mycotoxins and food safety.
