Mabuhay!Welcome to the tropical paradise of Boracay Island!
It’s 4km long, powder white sand beach and crystal clear turquoise water has been voted one of the best beaches
in the world. Boracay Island is about 7km long, and has several remote beaches around the island, as well as Bulabog Beach, which is the best kiteboarding and watersports beach in Asia. Boracay is a vacationer’s paradise, with luxury 5 star hotels, through traditional bungalows; something for anyone’s budget and taste. There are all kinds of activities on the island, most famous for the diving, kiteboarding, and windsurfing. There are many fantastic restaurants on the island with flavors from around the world. Boracay is above all else famous for it’s nightlife, with pubs, bars and dance clubs that are jumping late into the night. Take the time to get acquainted with the information in this book to help you find what you need to make your stay the most incredible vacation yet. Enjoy paradise and remember to keep smiling, you are officially on vacation!
7GeographyBoracay is in the province of Aklan, located in Panay. This is the center of the Philippines. These central islands are the Visayas, region 6.
The Island of Boracay is shaped like a dog bone. It is about 7 km long, and 1 km wide at it’s narrowest. White Beach and Bulabog beach are the primary and secondary tourism beaches, both located opposite of each other.
Boracay is located 2km from Caticlan, the mainland gateway for sea and air access to Boracay. There are ports both in the south of Boracay, Cagban Port and Tambisaan port (only used in Habagat season) as well as in Caticlan (Jetty Port) to ferry passengers across the Tabon Strait.
Boracay is separated into three districts; Yapak in the North, Manoc-Manoc in the South and Balabag in the center. It is common to use the boat stations of White Beach for reference to a location. Boat Station 1 in the north, Boat Station 2 in the center, and Boat Station 3 in the south.
Boracay has 12 beaches. White Beach is the most famous with most of Boracay’s establishments lined along the 4km long beach and footpath. Bulabog Beach, directly opposite, is the secondary water sports beach which is protected by a great reef. There is also the beautiful and undeveloped Puka Shell Beach in the north. The remaining other beaches are either deserted, remote, or have private resorts and villas. You can access nearly all beaches by a series of paved or gravel roads, or by sea.

WeatherAmihan - High Season (November to March)25-32°C (77-90°F)Cool at night and warm day time, moderate rain, northeasterly to easterly winds
Summer (April / May / June)28-38°C (82-100°F)Hot and mostly dry, sometimes easterly to southeasterly trade winds.
Habagat - Low Season (May/June to September/October)25-32°C (77-90°F)Winds from the southwest, moderate to heavy rainfall, humid
Tourist SeasonThe Low Season is when the winds blow “westward” into White Beach. There is more rain than usual, but there are also fewer tourists, better prices on accommodations, and other lower prices on goods and services. The low season begins in May, and ends in October.
During High Season, the winds come from the east side of the island, and White Beach is protected. The wind blows out to sea, leaving the beach pristinely clean and generally calm. It is winter in the northern
hemisphere, and tourists come in numbers seeking sun, heat, beach and party. High Season starts in October
and ends in May.
The Peak Season is when tourism is at its height. This includes Christmas, New Year,
Chinese New Year, and Holy Week (Easter Week). Some resorts have a +10%
to +25% premium on their rooms, and the island gets fully booked. Make sure you book as far in advance as possible.

Caticlan Airport
9
Getting HereBy Air:Caticlan is a small airport 20 minutes from Boracay. There are domestic flights from Manila, Cebu and Clark. A motorized trike will take you to the Jetty Port, less than five minutes away. This is definitely the preferred airport for ease and convenience. Due to the small size of the runway, smaller turboprop airplanes are used.
Kalibo Airport is a larger airport 90 minutes from Boracay. There are some international flights and it can accommodate larger jet airplanes. An air-conditioned van service can take you from Kalibo Airport to Caticlan Jetty Port for 200 PhP or you can take an open air Jeepney for 65 Php.
Airlines that serve Caticlan and Kalibo from Manila/Cebu (in order of price for early booking through the website)

By Land:The Strong Nautical Highway is a both an overland route and a series of Roll-on/Roll-off ferries. The trip is 12-16 hours with stopovers and dependant on sea conditions. It’s locally known as the RORO Boracay route. (A/C bus 1500 PhP)

Getting In1. Caticlan Airport to Caticlan Port – After getting out of the small airport, there will be a lineup of Motor Tricycles. The ride costs 50 PhP per trike for the five-minute trip to the port.
2. Caticlan Port to Boracay Port – The Jetty Port has Bangka pump boats that ferry between the Caticlan mainland and Boracay Island from Sunrise to Sunset. There are sometimes ferries after dark, but not reliably so. The Bangka trip is 25 PhP, however non-residents also pay a 75 PhP environmental fee, and a 50 PhP Terminal fee. You need to get these tickets outside the Jetty Port before you enter. The trip from the mainland to the island is about 15 minutes. If you have heavy luggage, there are porters to assist you at 20 PhP per item tip. Depending on the season, you will arrive at one of two Boracay Ports – Cagban Port in the High Season and Tambisaan Port in the Low Season.
3. Boracay Port to White Beach – The distance from either port to White Beach is about 10 minutes. There will be a long line of motortrikes to take you from the port to White Beach. This trip is 100 PhP per motortrike.
4. White Beach – The Motortrikes cannot go right down to the beach and will leave you on the Main Road next to a path that leads down to White Beach. The larger paths have pedal trikes that can take you down to your resort, or you can walk the five minutes. The Motortrike drivers should know the right place to drop you off.

Getting AroundMost visitors to Boracay stay on or near White Beach so it is convenient to travel by foot. It’s about an hour walk from one end of the beach to the other. Motor vehicles are not allowed on the footpath and beach. There are motorbikes with sidecars on the main road running parallel to White Beach. The fare between boat stations is 10 PhP. You can also hire a trike driver to take you around the island for 150PhP/Hour. This is a good way to visit other beaches such as Puka shell Beach, or the highest point on Boracay, Mt. luho View Point. You can also rent bicycles from Patio Pacific and vendors on White Beach for around 200 PhP per hour. Wear a helmet and go slow. Motorcycles can be rented from some vendors near Regency and in front of Budget Mart for around 600 PhP for two hours.
You can also hop around to the island’s remote beaches (Island Hopping) by Paraw, native canoe type sailboat. They are all over White Beach and should be around 500 PhP per hour with crew. Popular trips are to Puka Shell Beach, up and down White Beach, sunset sails, and around the Island (weather permitting). There are also ATVs and off road buggies available for rent on the main road and past station one.
11
MoneyThe currency is the Philippine Peso (PhP). Bill denominations are: 20, 50, 100, 500 and 1,000 pesos. If possible, bring your cash in 500 PhP denominations as you will find that getting change for 1000 peso bill can be difficult at times. ATMs dispense in 500 PhP bills. There are ATMs on White Beach, at D’Mall, and on the main road that will accept foreign debit/bank cards. During high and peak season the ATM’s tend to run out of cash and are not refilled till the next business day, so take out
money early in the day and before the weekend.
Foreign Currency is best exchanged at the banks or money changing stores. Only the larger restaurants and hotels accept credit cards including MasterCard, Visa and American Express, although a 5% surcharge on credit cards is standard. Personal checks are generally not accepted. Traveler’s checks get a lower exchange rate and should be changed at Allied Bank or the Boracay Tourist center. The Tourist Center will also give cash advances on credit cards (7%+ fee), and safe deposit boxes are available for rent.
CommunicationBoracay Island is serviced by two mobile providers, SMART and GLOBE. They have good reception through most of the island. Visitors can purchase a SIM card with phone number for 65 PhP and then purchase loads (user minutes) in amounts as low as 10 pesos. Text messages are definitely the main form of local communication at a cost of 1 peso per text. (The Philippines is the text message capital of the world). Talk time is more expensive between 6 to 8 pesos per minute. International text messages are quite affordable (most countries 20 PhP).
12
Landline calls are cheaper, and best for international calls. There are several International Phone booths along the White Beach footpath and in D’Mall. Some resorts also have international phone service, but generally at higher rates. Philippine country code is +63. Boracay’s area code is (036). My Boracay Guide’s phone number calling from overseas would be +63 36 288-9999.
Boracay has several internet cafes along White Beach, at the Tourist Information Center, and in D’Mall. Half hour is 25-35 PhP, one hour is 50-70 PhP. Connections are not very fast, but sufficient to email home.
There is a post office in the Tourist Information Center, as well as Balabag Plaza behind Station One. There is one LBC branch in station 3 on the main road for all your shipping needs.
There is a local newspaper that cover many of the events and happenings on the island called the “Boracay Sun”. You can find this at many of the popular establishments on the island. There are three major FM Radio Stations, Yes FM 91.1, Easy Rock 93.5 and Radio Boracay 106.1.
Visa ExtensionsThe Bureau of Immigration (BOI) can extend visitor visas as well as process other changes required in visa status. For visa extensions you will be required to make photocopies of your passport and fill out a visa application form. The cost varies depending on your visa and desired length of stay. You can expect to pay 3,030.00 PhP for 38-day extension. Please extend 1-2 weeks before visa expires to avoid penalty. There is a dress code so don’t wear board shorts or tank tops. Located on the main road inside Nirvana Resort, best to go on Mondays and Tuesdays, 8-12 and 1-5. For more information call 288-5267 (Boracay) 500-7601 (Kalibo).

Hotels & ResortsWhite Beach, Boat Station 1White Beach, Boat Station 1 is the North section of White Beach that is home to some of the top luxury resorts on Boracay. Almost all the resorts are directly on the beach, and offer most in-house services that you would expect from high end resorts. The footpath ends, and you must walk directly down the beach to arrive at the central action of Station 2.
White Beach, Boat Station 2Boat Station 2 is the restaurant, shopping, and entertainment heart of White Beach. Here you can find some of the high-end resorts, and many of the popular pubs and bars. D’Mall is also here, a collection of 100 small tourist shops and restaurants that stretch all the way to the main road. This is shopping central, and where a lot of the action takes place.
28
White Beach, Boat Station 3 White Beach, Boat Station 3 was the last section of White Beach to be developed. Most of the remaining White Beach budget and native style bungalows are located here, although recently more upscale resorts and services have been developed to take advantage of this more relaxed atmosphere. It is the quietest part of White Beach. There are some excellent value accommodations, as well as a few of the nicest White Beach Resorts.
Bulabog BeachBulabog Beach is the 2.5km long water sports beach of Boracay, and is located on the east side of the island. It is home for much of the windsurfing and kite boarding, and also has jet skis, parasailing and boating of all types. It is a 5 minute walk to D’Mall, 10 minutes to White Beach. There are some resorts here as well. The beach is protected by an offshore coral reef. It is less developed and quieter than White Beach. “Number One kite boarding beach in Asia.”
Off White BeachOff White Beach there are various other accommodations, including some of the top luxury resorts nestled away in private, if you are looking to stay away from the hustle and bustle of White Beach. There are a variety of resorts for every budget around the island and most have shuttle services to and from White Beach.

ShoppingWhite BeachAfter a delicious meal why not work off the calories with a bit of shopping. Take the time to walk white beach end to end to find some of the unique shops Boracay has to offer. As you leisurely stroll white beach you will be approached by men from the Muslim Vendors Association selling sunglasses, pearls, model sailboats, fake watches, belts and numerous other trinkets. There are a few stalls offering made to order bracelets customized with your name or whatever wording you decide upon. There will also be other people with laminated cue cards selling scuba diving, water sports, sailboat adventures and other activities. There are other services you will be offered as you enjoy your walk such as pedicures and manicures,
beach side massages, henna tattoos, and hair braiding. Sometimes it can get
frustrating hearing the same sales pitch over and over again, but just smile and shake your head…
relax you are on vacation.

D’MallD’Mall is a one stop shopping experience for everyone’s needs and desires. Starting at Budget mart on the main road all the way through to white beach you will find designer clothes, pharmacies, souvenir shops, travel agents, optical and dental services, fantastic European Deli (Heidiland-page 51) not to mention upscale and budget restaurants and a number of fine happy hour establishments.
From Crafts supermarket/department store heading towards white beach you will find a wet market offering all kinds of fruits, vegetables, meat and seafood. There are also cell phone repair vendors, souvenir shops, an alcohol store and some budget friendly hotels and restaurants. Find everything you want and more at D’Mall, located in Balabag (station 2).
D’TalipapaThis “small market place” is by no means small as suggested by its Tagalog name. With numerous alleyways you can maneuver around for an afternoon of shopping for all the souvenirs you can carry. There are vendors selling fresh veggies, fruits, meat and seafood for you to cook up yourself as well as many of the restaurants in the marketplace will cook to your pallets content. Remember to wear your bartering cap to get the best possible prices.

Plazoleta is a nice central shopping area located on white beach in the middle of station 2. Juice bar and Lonely Planet coffee shop corner post the market and as you continue through you will find shops offering unique art, tattoos, leather goods, investment opportunities, used books, Thai food and a newly opened Eco friendly store that sells unique products from around the Philippines that are good for you and the environment. There are also bathrooms located in the back past Siam Thai food restaurant.
BORACAY COMMUNITY MARKET at the Plazoleta on white beach. Every Saturday from 10am - 2pm with sellers coming from the mainland and within the Boracay Island community to display a wide range of regionally produced goods and attention-grabbing services. The Boracay Community Market really does provide a fresh and colourful start to a Saturday morning. Organizers promise Yummy Food, Original Products and many smiley happy people.

Bars, Pubs & Clubs If you love the nightlife, Boracay is a smorgasbord of all things that go Boom in the night! Almost everywhere has a happy hour with most starting at 5 through 7, however there are some that start earlier and go later. With tropical drinks served direct to your room, beach cabana or even at sunken pool bars you can enjoy paradise with a buzz at any hour of day or night.Station 3 has some more down to earth reggae vibe style bars, try Red Pirates for excellent music, people and atmosphere. Every Friday there is a BBQ on the beach which is occasionally accompanied by live music. Jungle Bar has relocated to Bulabog beach where you can find regular sunset drum and native instrument jams. The full moon parties are not to be missed!Station 2 has a vibrant live music scene starting with Regency’s full band on the beach, followed by Boracay Garden Resort which has a live show sing along style buffet restaurant. The Boracay Mandarin Island Hotel also has a full band you can enjoy while dining. Summer Place has different musical events along with DJ’s and, it’s usually one of the last parties going on every night. D’Hobbit House has nightly performers. Bom Bom and Pat’s Creek offer a very relaxed reggae environment with nightly performers and an occasional friendly poker game. Mint also has live music directly on the beach. Bamboo Lounge has regular fire dancers who will light your cigarette while twirling fire in your face, if you are brave enough. A great

Guilly’s Island offers great food, dancing and lounging on White Beach and is open late. If you’re looking for an action packed dance style of night life try Juice Bar in Plazoleta. If you’re looking to find where the expats congregate, try Crafty’s rooftop Bar above Crafts Supermarket, Rumbas in D’mall and Nigi Nigi Nu Noos in station 2. Exit Bar, located between Bom Bom and Red Coconut has a great mix of locals, divers, kiteboarders and all around interesting people. A new wine bar called Cork has recently opened in Boracay Regency Lagoon offering a large selection of wines, imported Beers and Cheese Tapas. Best time to party? Every night! Spa and Massage There are many ways to treat yourself to a relaxing spa or massage on Boracay. For the budget traveler, there are many independent women that will walk down the beach and offer massages right on the sand. (300 PhP). There are also numerous massage stations on the footpath (350 PhP). There are some hotels that have massage houses on the beach that also offer quality massages. Some hotels offer in-house massage services on the beach or in your room. If you are looking for a spa, try Yasuragi in station 3 for massage, wet and dry saunas and a Jacuzzi. Also try newly opened Bella Isa for beautification treatments and excellent massages. My Fish Spa offers a most memorable experience by having fish cleaning and massaging your feet.
For more upscale treatments, try Lava Stone, Poseidon Spa, Mandala Spa or Tirta Spa

Site: Angol Point Depth: 6m-16mExperience level: Beginner
Expect to be swarmed with thousands of fish at this site! Angol point is a favorite beginner dive site with 2 large coral reef boulders in about 12 meters of water rising up to 7 meters at the top. Because this site is a fish feeding area, damsel fish and angle fish are abundant.
Site: Camia Ship WreckDepth: 18m- 30mExperience Level: Advanced
This wreck was sunk in 2001 by the Boracay Diving association. Over the years the wreck has become home to Jacks, Sea Bass, Grouper, Surgeon fish, and Tangs. Just off the wreck you can find pygmy Sea horses and the very rare ghost pipe fish.
Since the wreck was deliberately sunk, it has been cleaned of toxic chemicals and wires that would tangle a diver, it also has wide swim thru’s extending throughout most of the length of the ship.
Site: Crocodile IslandDepth: 6m-18mExperience Level: Beginner to advanced
This site has the Best soft coral cover you will find anywhere in Boracay. Over half a hectare of rainbow colored soft and hard corals, table corals, anemone’s define this spectacular site. Trumpet fish, fusiliers, garden eels and triton trigger fish can also be found here. Below the soft corals is a 10 meter high wall where small caves, sea fans and whip corals can be found.

SkimboardingSkimboarding has come to Boracay in a big way. Skimboarding is a clean and cheap sport, and has become popular along White Beach.
It’s fun and easy to learn, but takes time and practice to master. It makes for a fun afternoon, and is great exercise. You can rent skimboards for 200 PhP per hour, and they will show you how to use them. There are skimboard shops all down White Beach.
ATV/Off-road buggiesThese can be rented on an hourly basis to cruise around the northern part of the island. They are available at several shops north of station 1. Stop at Everland Aviary Park and see the Butterfly Farm and all kinds of Tropical Birds and Mt. Luho viewpoint to take some spectacular scenic shots of the island.
KiteboardingKiteboarding is one of the most popular watersports on Boracay, with a growing community devoted to this extreme sport. During the November to March season, Bulabog Beach is transformed into Asia’s best kiteboarding beach, due to the unique wave breaking reefs and ideal wind situations. There are numerous competitions and events here as well. The kiteboarding scene that has sprung from these conditions is rapidly increasing in popularity, and people are coming here from all over the world. Introductory courses start at around Php2,900. Equipment rentals are available at all of the many kite shops along Bulabog beach.

If you are looking for something a little more adventurous then try a mainland eco tour where you will trek inside an ancient cave with sparkling stalactites and then cool off in a pristine natural cold spring. For an adventure a little closer to your resort try the horseback riding! See pages 122.
ZiplineZip down above tropical jungle and a pristine white beach, enjoying a spectacular view with a spike of adrenaline that will make for an everlasting memory. With an elevation of 80 feet above sea level and a cable length of 300 meters, it is designed to enable two riders to simultaneously traverse from top to bottom of an inclined cable by being attached with harnesses and pulleys. See page 118
Inter-Island Tour One of the top things to do in Boracay is the inter-island tour, also known as Island hopping. You can experience diving and snorkeling, fishing, and a picnic lunch in various spots around Boracay, and a number of neighboring islands. Crystal Cove is one of these islands and undoubtedly one of the highlights of the trip. True to its name, this 2.5 hectare island is blessed with crystal clear waters which you can admire from shore or immerse yourself in a tropical wonderland. You can also swim into two caves which the island has to offer. The 200 pesos entry fee is definitely worth the experience! UnearthingAsia.com (see page 119)

Fairways and Bluewater. Golf and so much more…The butterfly garden, at the entrance to Fairways, is a great way to start your day. The garden features numerous species of butterflies as well as a few fruit bats and a resident owl. If you are interested in a more adventurous tour, try horseback riding along jungle trails down to a private secluded beach. There is also a truly unique cave chapel that is worth a look.
Looking for a place to unwind? Sunbathing by the largest pool in Boracay, or on one of the private white sand beaches is an experience not to be missed. For golfers, The Graham Marsh designed 18-hole, par 72 golf course may be exactly what you are looking for.
If you are looking for a place to stay or invest, Fairways and Bluewater has multiple options to choose from.
