This week’s concept is smart saving. Smart saving is when someone has a plan for saving money. It is smart to save some of your money instead of spending all of it. Putting money in a bank is a smart way to save.

Sequence• Today you will read about a girl who has saved a lot of money. When you read

about her, it’s important to keep track of the sequence, or order of events because it may help you understand her savings plan. Pay attention to what happens to her money.

• For example, if I read that the girls saves her allowance, I need to pay attention to the first thing she does with her money. Then I need to follow the sequence of events to help me understand what she does after she has saved a large amount of money.

• As you read “Put it the Bank, “ look for actions that help you track the sequence of steps the girl takes to set up a savings plan. Add these actions to your graphic organizer.

During Reading As we read, ask yourself: What am I learning about saving money? What is this mainly about? Why does Beth take her cash to the bank in boxes? How does Miss Ashes help Beth? How does Beth

know the amount of money in her deposit? What more did you learn about saving money? Yes, Miss Ashes helps Beth deposit her savings. What does Miss Ashes print out for Beth?

After ReadingWhat did you learn about saving money? What was the selection mainly about? (Model how to

summarize) The selection told details about how Beth saved money at home and at a big bank. It was mainly about how she had a plan to save money.
