Lent is a season of preparation for Easter characterized by prayer, sacrifice (traditionally, fasting was the main form of sacrifice), and almsgiving, or doing good. Lent is also a time for people converting to Christianity to prepare for baptism, and for Christians to recall their baptism and prepare to renew their baptismal promises in the Easter Vigil Mass.

The word “Lent” comes from an Old English word, Lencten, which means spring. In modern English, however, the term has come to be used in place of the Latin word quad-

ragesima, a literal translation of the Greek word for the season – tessarakoste, which means

“forty days”. The Greek term was constructed in imitation of the Greek word pentekoste, which means “fifty days”.

This term started being used in the fourth century. Christians had ob-served some form of fasting and prayer prior to Easter since apostolic times, but the nature and duration of the preparation differed among the Christian communities. St. Athanasius helped universalize the tradition of a forty day season of preparation in the 300s. This duration had Bibli-cal significance, as Moses, Elijah and Jesus had all fasted for a period of forty days.

From the fourth century until recent times, local traditions continued to vary slightly, but all observed a rigorous discipline, abstaining from vari-ous foods for the entire season. Some abstained from all meat and fish; others from meat or fruit and eggs, and still others from all foods aside from dry bread. Abstaining from dairy products as well became a com-mon practice after the seventh century. In terms of fasting, the initial practice entailed a complete fast from all food and liquid until sundown, when one meal was permitted. People practiced this fast every day of the season, including Sundays, and some Christians exercised an even more rigorous fast, allowing themselves only one or two meals per week.

In the Middle Ages, some of these obligations were lightened. Abstain-ing from dairy and eggs was gradually set aside. Instead of waiting until

evening, Christians started being allowed to break their daily fast at none. None literally means the ninth hour, or 3:00. However, it was commonly used not to signify the precise time of 3:00, but to refer to a period of time during which the Office of None (vespers) would be said, beginning at 1:00 and ending at 3:00. Over time, none came to mean from 12:00-3:00, and gradually became a term we are all familiar with: “noon.” Today, although it is not required, many Christians in the East-ern Catholic rites continue to practice this tradition, by fasting from all forms of food and drink until noon each day of Lent.

During the time of St. Thomas Aquinas, the Church began allowing col-lation, or the practice of consuming a portion of solid food – not to ex-ceed 8 oz – and drink in the evening, in addition to the midday meal. Abstinence from meat every day was still customary.

Today, fasting is only required on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, with a light meal allowed in the morning, in addition to the noonday meal and evening snack. Abstaining from meat is required only on Fri-days. The Church requires Catholics age 14 and above to follow the guidelines for abstinence and Catholics age 18 and above to follow the guidelines for fasting. In addition, all Catholics, including those not re-quired to fast or abstain, are encouraged to find other ways to purify their hearts through prayer, sacrifice and charity, in preparation for the celebration of the Paschal Mysteries.

Family Activities

1. Make a crown of thorns out of clay and toothpicks. Every time some-one in the family does a good deed, take out one of the thorns. Try to remove all the thorns before the end of Lent.

2. Label a jar “Lenten Charity”, and leave it on the kitchen counter, or somewhere easily accessible. Anytime someone in the family brings home loose change during Lent, put it in the jar. At the end of Lent, take all the money from the jar, and go all together to give it to a charitable organization.

3. Say the Stations of the Cross together every Friday during Lent.

4. Start a jelly bean jar. Choose certain actions you’ll do as a family every day during Lent. Whenever someone does one of these things, put a jelly bean in the jar. Collect as many jelly beans as pos-sible before Easter!

5. Put on a Passion play.

6. Make a Lent Calendar. Decide something special you’ll do together each day (prayer, sacrifice, almsgiving…) for Lent.

7. Spend a morning doing something to help others together (go to a nursing home, help out in a soup kitchen, visit an orphanage, do chores for an elderly friend, etc.)

8. Go to confession together one day during Lent.

9. Read the Holy Father’s Lenten Message, Ash Wednesday homily and Holy Week homilies together. Discuss their meaning and if

Page 9: My Lenten Journey - Life of a Homeschool Mom · The Prodigal Son Read the scripture passage below. Then complete the “Prodigal Son Worksheet”. Then he said, "A man had two sons,

9

there’s anything you, as a family want to stop doing, start doing, or change based on the messages.

10.Make a Lenten Prayer Corner. Use a small table or other flat sur-face. Put out a Bible, a picture of Jesus’ Passion and/or the Last Supper, and some other decoration that reminds you of Lent (maybe a crown of thorns, palm branches, or wheat). Gather around the prayer corner once a day during Lent to pray together as a family.

11.Write a prayer together to say as a family each day during Lent. Make the prayer meaningful for your family.

12.If you know someone who is going to be baptized into the Church at Easter, make a Welcome Pack for them. You could include things like a Bible, a rosary, sacred art, sacred music, a spiritual journal, and anything else you think of to welcome them into the faith.

13.Sort through your toys and belongings all together. Set aside things that you don’t use, as well as some things that you do use, but can do without. Before Lent is over, donate what you have set aside to a charitable organization.

14.Make pretzels together. Pretzels used to be made during Lent be-cause they didn’t have any dairy or eggs, which people used to ab-stain from. Also, the shape of the pretzels symbolizes arms folded in prayer.

Crafts

1. Make special placemats for Lent. Design them on the computer, or using art supplies. Include images and verses of Scripture that mean something special to you during Lent. Laminate the placemats for protection.

2. Make a Lenten Prayer Rock. Find stones about the size of your hand or a little smaller, and relatively flat. Paint them with scenes from the Bible related to Lent or with Lenten symbols. Put the prayer rocks in your family Lenten Prayer Corner (see Family Activities), or in your room next to your bed. Every time you see your prayer rock, say a special prayer asking God to help you grow closer to him this Lent.

3. Make your own crosses or crucifixes. Be creative—you can use clothespins, clay, paper and art supplies or natural materials. Put your crosses in your Lenten Prayer Corner (see Family Activities) or some other place around the house where you will frequently see them.

4. Make puppets of Bible characters involved in Jesus’ Passion, Death and Resurrection. You can make sock puppets, felt puppets, or puppets from different materials. Then put on a puppet show about the Paschal Mysteries.

5. Design Lent and Easter Eggs. Instead of using a dye kit to make Easter eggs, use colored permanent markers and draw unique de-signs or scenes on each egg that represent the spiritual significance of the Paschal Mysteries.

6. Find a small tin or box and decorate it as a Lenten Prayer Box. Invite everyone who visits your home to write anything they want you

Page 11: My Lenten Journey - Life of a Homeschool Mom · The Prodigal Son Read the scripture passage below. Then complete the “Prodigal Son Worksheet”. Then he said, "A man had two sons,

11

to pray for and put it in the prayer box. Each day, take one of the prayer intentions and offer any Lenten sacrifices and prayers you do that day for that intention.

7. Design your own images for your Family Stations of the Cross (see Family Activities). You can just draw an image for each station, or you can make a booklet including images and reflections for all the Stations.

8. Make shoebox crafts. Take a shoebox and make a scene reflecting one of the Paschal Mysteries, such as the Last Supper, the Agony in the Garden, or the Crucifixion).

The Prodigal Son

Read the scripture passage below. Then complete the “Prodigal Son Worksheet”. Then he said, "A man had two sons, and the younger son said to his fa-ther, 'Father, give me the share of your estate that should come to me.' So the father divided the property between them. After a few days, the younger son collected all his belongings and set off to a distant country where he squandered his inheritance on a life of dissipation. When he had freely spent everything, a severe famine struck that coun-try, and he found himself in dire need. So he hired himself out to one of the local citizens who sent him to his farm to tend the swine. And he longed to eat his fill of the pods on which the swine fed, but nobody gave him any. Coming to his senses he thought, 'How many of my father's hired work-ers have more than enough food to eat, but here am I, dying from hun-ger. I shall get up and go to my father and I shall say to him, "Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I no longer deserve to be called your son; treat me as you would treat one of your hired workers."'

So he got up and went back to his father. While he was still a long way off, his father caught sight of him, and was filled with compassion. He ran to his son, embraced him and kissed him. His son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you; I no longer de-serve to be called your son.' But his father ordered his servants, 'Quickly bring the finest robe and put it on him; put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Take the fattened calf and slaughter it. Then let us celebrate with a feast, because this son of mine was dead, and has come to life again; he was lost, and has been found.' Then the celebra-tion began. Now the older son had been out in the field and, on his way back, as he neared the house, he heard the sound of music and dancing. He called one of the servants and asked what this might mean. The servant said to him, 'Your brother has returned and your father has slaughtered the fattened calf because he has him back safe and sound.' He became angry, and when he refused to enter the house, his father came out and pleaded with him. He said to his father in reply, 'Look, all these years I served you and not once did I disobey your orders; yet you never gave me even a young goat to feast on with my friends. But when your son returns who swallowed up your property with prostitutes, for him you slaughter the fattened calf.' He said to him, 'My son, you are here with me always; everything I have is yours. But now we must cele-brate and rejoice, because your brother was dead and has come to life again; he was lost and has been found.'" (Lk 15: 11-32)

Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving Select a few verses from the passage below, and analyze what they mean for your life of faith.

“When you give alms, do not blow a trumpet before you, as the hypo-crites do in the synagogues and in the streets to win the praise of oth-ers. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right is doing, so that your almsgiving may be secret. And your Father who sees in secret will repay you. When you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, who love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on street corners so that oth-ers may see them. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you pray, go to your inner room, close the door, and pray to your Father in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will repay you.” (Mt 6:2-6)

We do this by praying more, sacrificing more, and giving more to others. Can you think of different ways you can follow Jesus more closely this Lent in these areas?

For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. What profit is there for one to gain the whole world yet lose or forfeit himself?’” (Lk 9:23-25) Journal Reflection: Jesus gave his life to save us. Lent is a time for us to prepare ourselves to celebrate his Passion, Death and Resurrection. Write a prayer you can say every day this Lent to help prepare your heart for Holy Week and Easter.

Friday After Ash Wednesday “This, rather, is the fasting that I wish: releasing those bound unjustly, untying the thongs of the yoke; setting free the oppressed, breaking every yoke; sharing your bread with the hungry, sheltering the op-pressed and the homeless; clothing the naked when you see them, and not turning your back on your own. Then your light shall break forth like the dawn, and your wound shall quickly be healed; your vindication shall go before you, and the glory of the LORD shall be your rear guard. Then you shall call, and the LORD will answer, you shall cry for help, and he will say: Here I am!” (Is 58: 5-9) Journal Reflection: Fasting has played an important role in the spiritual life for centuries, beginning long before the coming of Jesus. As Christians, we place special emphasis on fasting during Lent. How do you think fasting can help us as Christians? If you are too young to fast, is there something you can do instead?

I have not come to call the righteous to repentance but sinners.’” (Lk 5: 29-32) Journal Reflection: What does this Gospel passage tell you about Jesus? What does it tell you about our mission as Christians?

First Sunday of Lent “At once the Spirit drove him out into the desert, and he remained in the desert for forty days, tempted by Satan. He was among wild beasts, and the angels ministered to him. After John had been arrested, Jesus came to Galilee proclaiming the gospel of God: ‘This is the time of fulfill-ment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gos-pel.’” (Mk 1: 12-15) Journal Reflection: While Jesus was in the desert, the devil tempted him to work miracles, but he choose not to, trusting instead, in his Father. Why did Jesus trust God instead of Satan? How can you trust God more in your own life?

TODAY is the time we have to love God and others. What can you do today to show Jesus that you believe in him, love him, and are grateful that he came to earth and died to save us?

As high as the heavens are above the earth, so high are my ways above your ways and my thoughts above your thoughts. For just as from the heavens the rain and snow come down and do not return there till they have watered the earth, making it fertile and fruitful, giving seed to him who sows and bread to him who eats, so shall my word be that goes forth from my mouth; it shall not return to me void, but shall do my will, achieving the end for which I sent it.” (Is 55:8-11) Journal Reflection: It is very important for us to listen to God’s Word. Take some time today to read a passage in the Gospels about something Jesus said or did. Write down your reflections about what you read and what it means to you.

(…) When God saw by their actions how they turned from their evil way, he repented of the evil that he had threatened to do to them; he did not carry it out.” (Jonah 3: 4-5, 10) Journal Reflection: We worship a very merciful God. For everyone who asks, receives; and the one who seeks, finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. Which one of you would hand his son a stone when he asks for a loaf of bread, or a snake when he asks for a fish? If you then, who are wicked, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good things to those who ask him. ‘Do to others whatever you would have them do to you.’ This is the law and the prophets.” (Mt 7:7-12) Journal Reflection: God assures us that he will always give good things to those that ask. Have you ever experienced him answering a prayer? What are some things you want to ask God for in your life now? Remember: God al-ways answers our prayers, but he answers in his time and his way. Be patient when you pray, and trust in his wisdom.

None of the crimes he committed shall be remem-bered against him; he shall live because of the virtue he has practiced. Do I indeed derive any pleasure from the death of the wicked? says the Lord GOD. Do I not rather rejoice when he turns from his evil way that he may live?” (Ez 18: 21-23) Journal Reflection: God rejoices every time one of us repents of a sin. The joy of forgive-ness and salvation is very present in Christianity. How have you experi-enced joy and forgiveness?

First Week of Lent: Saturday

"This day the LORD, your God, commands you to observe these stat-utes and decrees. Be careful, then, to observe them with all your heart and with all your soul. Today you are making this agreement with the LORD: he is to be your God and you are to walk in his ways and ob-serve his statutes, commandments and decrees, and to hearken to his voice. And today the LORD is making this agreement with you: you are to be a people peculiarly his own, as he promised you; and provided you keep all his commandments, he will then raise you high in praise and renown and glory above all other nations he has made, and you will be a people sacred to the LORD, your God, as he promised." (Deut 26: 16-19) Journal Reflection: When God tells us to obey his commandments, he tells us to do so with all our heart and soul. What does God’s law mean for you in your life? What helps you put your whole heart and soul into it?

Second Sunday of Lent

“While he was still speaking, a cloud came and cast a shadow over them, and they became frightened when they entered the cloud. Then from the cloud came a voice that said, ‘This is my chosen Son; listen to him.’ After the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. Second Week of Lent: Monday

“Be merciful, just as (also) your Father is merciful. Stop judging and you will not be judged. Stop condemning and you will not be condemned. Forgive and you will be forgiven. Give and gifts will be given to you; a good measure, packed together, shaken down, and overflowing, will be poured into your lap. For the measure with which you measure will in return be measured out to you." (Lk 6: 36-38) Journal Reflection: What are some challenges that make forgiving someone else difficult? What are some ways you can overcome those challenges to forgive others the way God asks us to?

Second Week of Lent: Tuesday

“As for you, do not be called 'Rabbi.' You have but one teacher, and you are all brothers. Call no one on earth your father; you have but one Fa-ther in heaven. Do not be called 'Master'; you have but one master, the Messiah. The greatest among you must be your servant. Whoever ex-alts himself will be humbled; but whoever humbles himself will be ex-alted.” (Mt 23: 8-12) Journal Reflection: To be the greatest in God’s eyes, we must be a servant. What are some ways you can serve others this Lent?

Second Week of Lent: Wednesday

“Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee approached him with her sons and did him homage, wishing to ask him for something. He said to her, ‘What do you wish?’ She answered him, ‘Command that these two sons of mine sit, one at your right and the other at your left, in your kingdom.’ Jesus said in reply, ‘You do not know what you are ask-ing. Can you drink the cup that I am going to drink?’ They said to him, ‘We can.’ He replied, ‘My cup you will indeed drink, but to sit at my right and at my left (this) is not mine to give but is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father.’" (Mt 20: 20-23) Journal Reflection: Sharing in the cup of Jesus includes sharing in the Cross. Sometimes we have larger crosses or sufferings, but most of the time we have small crosses or challenges in our daily life. What are some difficulties you experience in your day? How can you turn them into opportunities to share in Jesus’ cup?

Second Week of Lent: Thursday

“Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, whose hope is the LORD. He is like a tree planted beside the waters that stretches out its roots to the stream: it fears not the heat when it comes, its leaves stay green; in the year of drought it shows no distress, but still bears fruit. More tortu-ous than all else is the human heart, beyond remedy; who can under-stand it? I, the LORD, alone probe the mind and test the heart, to re-ward everyone according to his ways, according to the merit of his deeds.” (Jer 17: 7-10) Journal Reflection: God knows our heart, but still wants us to share it with him. Tell him about everything you have in your heart today.

“And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life. For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eter-nal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him.” (Jn 3: 14-16) Journal Reflection: Tell God in your own words how thankful you are that he sent us his only Son.

“So to them he addressed this parable. ‘What man among you having a hundred sheep and losing one of them would not leave the ninety-nine in the desert and go after the lost one until he finds it? And when he does find it, he sets it on his shoulders with great joy and, upon his arri-val home, he calls together his friends and neighbors and says to them, 'Rejoice with me because I have found my lost sheep.' I tell you, in just the same way there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who re-pents than over ninety-nine righteous people who have no need of re-pentance.’” (Lk 15:3-7) Journal Reflection: Write your own parable about how much God loves us.

Third Week of Lent: Monday

“And he said, ‘Amen, I say to you, no prophet is accepted in his own native place. Indeed, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah when the sky was closed for three and a half years and a severe famine spread over the entire land. It was to none of these that Elijah was sent, but only to a widow in Zarephath in the land of Sidon. Again, there were many lepers in Israel during the time of Elisha the prophet; yet not one of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syr-ian.’ When the people in the synagogue heard this, they were all filled with fury. They rose up, drove him out of the town, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town had been built, to hurl him down headlong. But he passed through the midst of them and went away.” (Lk 4:24-30) Journal Reflection: What can you do to help Jesus be accepted… • In your heart • In your family • In your community (school, neighborhood, parish, etc.)

Third Week of Lent: Tuesday

“For we are reduced, O Lord, beyond any other nation, brought low everywhere in the world this day because of our sins. We have in our day no prince, prophet, or leader, no holocaust, sacrifice, oblation, or incense, no place to offer first fruits, to find favor with you. But with con-trite heart and humble spirit let us be received; as though it were holo-causts of rams and bullocks, or thousands of fat lambs, so let our sacri-fice be in your presence today as we follow you unreservedly; for those who trust in you cannot be put to shame. And now we follow you with our whole heart, we fear you and we pray to you. Do not let us be put to shame, but deal with us in your kindness and great mercy. Deliver us by your wonders, and bring glory to your name, O Lord(…)” (Dan 3: 37-43) Journal Reflection: No matter how hard we try, we are sometimes going to make mistakes. How can we learn and grow from our mistakes? How can they bring us closer to God?

Third Week of Lent: Wednesday

"Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I have come not to abolish but to fulfill. Amen, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or the smallest part of a letter will pass from the law, until all things have taken place. Therefore, who-ever breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches oth-ers to do so will be called least in the kingdom of heaven. But whoever obeys and teaches these commandments will be called greatest in the kingdom of heaven.” (Mt 5: 17-19) Journal Reflection: How did you learn about God’s commandments? Who has shown you how to live God’s commandments by example? How many different ways can you think of to teach God’s commandments to others?

“But he knew their thoughts and said to them, "Every kingdom divided against itself will be laid waste and house will fall against house. And if Satan is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? For you say that it is by Beelzebul that I drive out demons. If I, then, drive out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your own people drive them out? Therefore they will be your judges. But if it is by the finger of God that (I) drive out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you. When a strong man fully armed guards his palace, his possessions are safe. But when one stronger than he attacks and overcomes him, he takes away the armor on which he relied and distributes the spoils. Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.” (Lk 11: 17-23) Journal Reflection: Lent is almost halfway over. What have you learned so far? What do you want to learn more about during the second half of Lent?

The Lord our God is Lord alone! You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.' The second is this: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no other commandment greater than these.’" (Mk 12: 28-31) Journal Reflection: These are the two greatest commandments. All of the other command-ments fall under either loving God, or loving others. Read the 10 com-mandments today, and see if you can identify which commandments are about loving God and which are about loving others. What are some things you can do today to love God and others?

Fourth Week of Lent: Monday “Lo, I am about to create new heavens and a new earth; the things of the past shall not be remembered or come to mind. Instead, there shall always be rejoicing and happiness in what I create; for I create Jerusa-lem to be a joy and its people to be a delight; I will rejoice in Jerusalem and exult in my people. No longer shall the sound of weeping be heard there, or the sound of crying; no longer shall there be in it an infant who lives but a few days, or an old man who does not round out his full life-time; he dies a mere youth who reaches but a hundred years, and he who fails of a hundred shall be thought accursed. They shall live in the houses they build, and eat the fruit of the vineyards they plant(…)” (Is 65:17-21) Journal Reflection: Jesus died for us so we could be saved, and enjoy eternal life with him. No one knows exactly what heaven is like, but Jesus did give us some clues, and we know it will be perfect happiness. How do you imagine Heaven?

For the Father loves his Son and shows him everything that he himself does, and he will show him greater works than these, so that you may be amazed. For just as the Father raises the dead and gives life, so also does the Son give life to whomever he wishes. Nor does the Father judge anyone, but he has given all judgment to his Son, so that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him.’” (Jn 5:19-23) Journal Reflection: God gave us our parents as a reflection of his love for us. Fourth Week of Lent: Thursday “But Moses implored the LORD, his God, saying, ‘Why, O LORD, should your wrath blaze up against your own people, whom you brought out of the land of Egypt with such great power and with so strong a hand? Why should the Egyptians say, 'With evil intent he brought them out, that he might kill them in the mountains and extermi-nate them from the face of the earth'? Let your blazing wrath die down; relent in punishing your people. Remember your servants Abraham, Isaac and Israel, and how you swore to them by your own self, saying, 'I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky; and all this land that I promised, I will give your descendants as their perpet-ual heritage.' So the LORD relented in the punishment he had threat-ened to inflict on his people.” (Ex 32: 11-14) Journal Reflection: We pray for many reasons. We can ask God for things we want or need, we can intercede for others, as Moses does in this passage, we can pray to thank God, and we can pray to just adore and worship him. What are some ways you have prayed recently? What are some ways you want to pray today?

When the Messiah comes, no one will know where he is from.’ So Jesus cried out in the temple area as he was teaching and said, ‘You know me and also know where I am from. Yet I did not come on my own, but the one who sent me, whom you do not know, is true. I know him, because I am from him, and he sent me.’ So they tried to arrest him, but no one laid a hand upon him, because his hour had not yet come.” (Jn 7: 25-30) Journal Reflection: Jesus was sent by the Father with a specific mission: saving us. Does not scripture say that the Messiah will be of David's family and come from Bethlehem, the village where David lived?’ So a division occurred in the crowd because of him. Some of them even wanted to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him. So the guards went to the chief priests and Pharisees, who asked them, ‘Why did you not bring him?’ The guards answered, ‘Never be-fore has anyone spoken like this one.’" (Jn 7: 40-46) Journal Reflection: The guards admired Jesus because they were captivated by his words. Jesus an-swered them, ‘The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Amen, amen, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies, it produces much fruit. Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will preserve it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there also will my servant be. Holy Week: Monday “A bruised reed he shall not break, and a smoldering wick he shall not quench, until he establishes justice on the earth; the coastlands will wait for his teaching. Thus says God, the LORD, who created the heav-ens and stretched them out, who spreads out the earth with its crops, who gives breath to its people and spirit to those who walk on it: I, the LORD, have called you for the victory of justice, I have grasped you by the hand; I formed you, and set you as a covenant of the people, a light for the nations, to open the eyes of the blind, to bring out prisoners from confinement, and from the dungeon, those who live in darkness.” (Is 42: 3-9) Journal Reflection: God created us and saved us because he loves us so much. What are different ways you have experienced his love in your life? What are some ways you have shown his love to others?

Holy Week: Tuesday “When he had said this, Jesus was deeply troubled and testified, ‘Amen, amen, I say to you, one of you will betray me.’ The disciples looked at one another, at a loss as to whom he meant. One of his disci-ples, the one whom Jesus loved, was reclining at Jesus' side. So Simon Peter nodded to him to find out whom he meant. He leaned back against Jesus' chest and said to him, ‘Master, who is it?’ Jesus an-swered, ‘It is the one to whom I hand the morsel after I have dipped it.’ So he dipped the morsel and (took it and) handed it to Judas, son of Simon the Iscariot. After he took the morsel, Satan entered him. So Je-sus said to him, ‘What you are going to do, do quickly.’” (Jn 13: 21-27) Journal Reflection: Judas betrayed Jesus for 30 pieces of silver. Is there anything in your life that is more important to you than it should be? How can you put it back in its place so Jesus remains first in your heart?

Holy Week: Wednesday “The Lord GOD has given me a well-trained tongue, that I might know how to speak to the weary a word that will rouse them. Morning after morning he opens my ear that I may hear; and I have not rebelled, have not turned back. I gave my back to those who beat me, my cheeks to those who plucked my beard; my face I did not shield from buffets and spitting. The Lord GOD is my help, therefore I am not disgraced; I have set my face like flint, knowing that I shall not be put to shame. He is near who upholds my right; if anyone wishes to oppose me, let us ap-pear together. Who disputes my right? Let him confront me. See, the Lord GOD is my help; who will prove me wrong?” (Is 50: 4-9) Journal Reflection: God loves us, but he does not remove all sufferings and difficulties from our life. He gives us strength through them. Why do you think God al-lows suffering in our life? Can you think of an instance when something good came out of something that was difficult for you?

Holy Week: Thursday “While they were eating, Jesus took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and giving it to his disciples said, ‘Take and eat; this is my body.’ Then he took a cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, ‘Drink from it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant, which will be shed on be-half of many for the forgiveness of sins. I tell you, from now on I shall not drink this fruit of the vine until the day when I drink it with you new in the kingdom of my Father.’ Then, after singing a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.” (Mt 26: 26-30) Journal Reflection: If you have already made your First Communion, tell Jesus what receiv-ing the Eucharist means to you. If you have not yet made your First Communion, tell Jesus how much you are looking forward to it and why.

Holy Week: Good Friday “When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple there whom he loved, he said to his mother, ‘Woman, behold, your son.’ Then he said to the dis-ciple, ‘Behold, your mother.’ And from that hour the disciple took her into his home. After this, aware that everything was now finished, in or-der that the scripture might be fulfilled, Jesus said, ‘I thirst.’ There was a vessel filled with common wine. So they put a sponge soaked in wine on a sprig of hyssop and put it up to his mouth. When Jesus had taken the wine, he said, ‘It is finished.’ And bowing his head, he handed over the spirit.” (Jn 19: 26-30) Journal Reflection: When Jesus gave Mary to John, he gave her to all of us as our Mother. What do you think Our Lady was thinking and feeling in those mo-ments? Why do you think Jesus wanted her to be our Mother too?

Holy Week: Saturday “After this, Joseph of Arimathea, secretly a disciple of Jesus for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate if he could remove the body of Jesus. And Pilate permitted it. So he came and took his body. Nicodemus, the one who had first come to him at night, also came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes weighing about one hundred pounds. They took the body of Jesus and bound it with burial cloths along with the spices, according to the Jewish burial custom. Now in the place where he had been crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had yet been buried. So they laid Jesus there because of the Jewish preparation day; for the tomb was close by.” (Jn 19: 38-42) Journal Reflection: Even though Easter hasn’t arrived yet, we already know the end of the story! What are you looking forward to this Easter? Why is Easter so important? For Jesus? For us?
