All hair color needs extra love in the summer months – blondes and reds especially. No one looks good brassy, and blond flyaways are best underneath a sunhat.

Your skin isn’t the only thing that changes with the sun’s warming rays. Blondes will become frizzy, brunettes will lose their shine, and redheads will inevitably get brassy. So just like the SPF you put on your skin, your hair needs some extra care too!

Color Retention

HIP Salon carries multiple products with UV protec-tion for your hair. Bumble and Bumble’s Color Minded UV Protective Styling Balm needs to be in your hair care routine. Not only does it moisturize and tame your natural texture, it protects your hair with UV filters and Bumble’s very own color-pre-serving complex, which keeps tones true. Kerastase also has a great leave-in treatment to keep your color vibrant. Chroma Thermique adds shine, protects hair from heat styling tools and offers UV protection.

Dry Shampoos

If you can skip a day of

shampooing, DO IT! Although this is true for every season, summer is one of most import-ant times to skip a day or two and use a dry shampoo! An op-tion from Bumble and Bumble would be Pret-a-Powder. Not only does this product soak up unwanted oils, but it also gives you that worn-in sexy second day hair.

Kerastase also recently re-leased a new styling line with a texturizing dry shampoo called Powder Bluff. This product offers anti-frizz and humid-ity protection (we ALL need that in the summer) and also provides UV filters and heat protection.

When you do shampoo, make sure you are using something color safe followed by a con-ditioner also for color-treated hair. Oribe’s Beautiful line is to die for! With exotic in-gredients such as Edelweiss Flower Extract, from the Swiss Alps, which provides natural protection against the drying and damaging effects of the elements. Bumble and Bumble’s Color Minded line and Kerastase’s Chroma Captive shampoo and conditioner are both excellent choices too, depending on your budget.

Just for Blondes

If you are blonde and swim-ming in the pool this summer,

you may see a green hue taking over your lovely locks. Before you jump in, wet your hair then put a leave in condition-er like Bumble and Bumble’s Color Minded Styling Balm. This will help from your hair soaking up any of that unwant-ed green tone from the water.  

Clarifying shampoos will help remove some of that unwanted green. Bumble and Bumble’s Surf Shampoo will do two things for you. First, it will clarify unwanted impurities out of your hair, and second, it will give you that beachy texture and wave for that summer look. But you may need a little extra help, come in and see one of your colorist for a treatment to rid your hair of extra build up from your laps in the pool.

Salt Water Protection

Traveling this spring or sum-mer? Salt water may give your hair that beachy wave and texture everyone wishes for. But your hair will be begging to be hydrated! Try Oribe’s Supershine Moisturizing Cream, which gives just the right amount of moisture and shine after you step out of the ocean to keep that tousled look. Supershine Moisturizing Cream also has exotic ingre-dients such as Kaempferia Galanga Root Extract, which also delivers natural UV protection.

Cool Rinse

One more tip ... when rinsing your hair use cooler water just like you would wash bright-colored clothing! A nice cold burst of water at the end of your shower will keep your color vibrant and shiny!

Sorry, winter, we’re way over you. It’s time to refresh your look for spring without the requirement to spend hours in front of the mirror each morning.

Hairstyles for spring present themselves as entirely effortless. These aren’t Hollywood-perfect waves; these waves have a bit of texture and tousle, are worn either with a

side part or center part, and perfect for both shorter and longer hair.

What length of short is in? The bob. Soft, long layers and full of texture or flowing waves from the shoulder to just below the ear.

Pixie Pays Off

Yes, the Pixie is hot now. Gamine and gorgeous, yet classic — the short Pixie hairstyle takes guts. The payoff is how well it shows off your features. Remember the stir Jennifer Lawrence caused when she adopted the Pixie.

It’s most flattering with wavy hair and an oval, square or heart-shaped face. Go take the plunge and have (me) your stylist create this ‘do for you? Ask for a short, soft, wispy-layered cut with enough length to allow for face-framing bangs in the front and some coverage at the nape — or bring in your favorite celeb-inspired photo for a reference.

Sometimes depending on the texture of the hair, layered hairstyles can be done as jagged or shaggy style. Layers have a variety of styles: wavy, pixie cut, spring-layered hairstyle and choppy layers. You can even wear medium-layered hairstyles with side bangs for a nice frame to any face type.

Medium-length styles are so versatile that anyone can rock the look. That’s why so many women with these hairstyles look so fabulous every single day. Celebrities have gorgeous medium-lay-ered hairstyles.

Use various hair sprays like Super Strong Fine from Oribe or City Swept from Bumble and Bumble to give a next day look to the hair. These products give the impression of volume to your hair, even if you have thin texture.

Now, for men’s cuts. New modern hairstyles and haircuts are a great way to change your look. Men feel that they look attractive with a trendy hairstyle, which is so true. Men want their women to look hot so why not vice versa? Lots of trendy hairstyles for men have come on the market, and hairstyles have become a highly competitive look. 

Fade

The Fade haircut is one of my favorite cuts. A great Fade takes a huge amount of skill to perform correctly, and few barbers have the patience and skill to pull it off. A perfect Fade will contain no visible lines and will be cleanly finished. This is an excellent cut for anyone wanting to manage unruly thick or curly hair.

With the Fade, hair at the back and sides is tapered from the longest length on top all the way down to the skin at the neck. This is a smooth transition compared to the distinct lines of the undercut. The Fade can be more obvious if hair is longer on top or subtler with shorter hair, but it can be combined with any cut on top. Wear hair longer for the slick look, shorter to spike it, both will work with Gel Serum or Rock Hard Gel from Oribe.

There’s little day-to-day styling involved with the Fade. However, keeping hair precisely trimmed is one of the key elements to maintaining a high-style look. Detailing is very important! Unlike the undercut, this is not a DIY at home cut. Executing a seamless transition requires the steady hand of a skilled professional. Leave this to (me) your stylist.

Another men’s favorite is a modern version of the pompadour. Like the Fade, it’s short on the sides but you’ll have about 3 inches long on top. Or try a classic from the ’50s with side-swept hair but yet still tapered and clean.

HIP team suPPorts CanCer walk on may 18Add a touch of purple to your hair or show off a glittery tattoo, and you’ll help HIP Salon support the Wellness Place and its cancer awareness campaign.

HIP Salon is proud to sponsor the Wellness Place Community Cancer Walk & Celebration on Sunday May 18, at The Arboretum of South Barrington. The 1-mile walk-run will bring families, friends and supporters together for a common cause: cancer awareness.

HIP staff will have a table with glitter tat-toos for $10 each.

Or, come into the salon before the event and get a purple or lavender extension for $10 each.

All proceeds will go to the Wellness Place, which provides education, counseling and support for those affected by cancer. More at www.wellnessplace.org.

With another one of our long Chicago winters come and gone, We are now anxiously waiting for spring and summer but with that comes one of our hair’s worst enemy: Humidity!

No matter what your style or hair type (thick or thin), we have the right product to keep your hair in check and looking salon fresh. Using the right cocktail of products is your best bet to maintain your “fresh-out-of-the-chair” look.

The time has come to denounce the collective depression of winter. Spring and summer seasons are upon us, and this happy colorist is ready to frolic and paint her clients accordingly.

Hair colors are generally solid. You find that boring? Hardly. It’s about creating a pop of color from a respectable distance

and discovering nuance up close. Every color, like every soul, has a dark side and is perfect for creating dimension. We don’t want the look of a wig. Those hairs have to bounce and sashay while you stand there looking unassuming and fabulous.

Blondes are blonde again. None of this in-between business. Ash and pastel tones reign. Platinum to silver, lavender and pink ... or perhaps baby blue is your color? Today’s blonde is reminiscent of yesterday’s sex kitten, but with an edge. If you’re a warm skin tone, fret not. Gold is not only an option but they are no lon-ger muted. Rather, they gleam truer undertones of yellow to copper, radiating the colors of the sun.

Reds are on fire. There is no room for brown dulling this season’s reds. Coppers burn bright, while deeper reds are crimson and dare you to call them fake. Word of advice, don’t mess with this season’s redhead. She is out to create memories.

Brunettes. Our time has come. The range of shades are good enough to eat and they make a statement. From dark to darker, caramel to ebony, this season’s range of brunettes are not only acknowledged, but also respected. The most interesting brunettes

choose to mix it up on the same head of hair. Remember what I said about nuance? You gotta get close baby.

Still not comfortable with-out different colors to adorn yourself with? The ombré is simply not going away. But it has given way to a more sophisticated version. Gone are the black roots and over processed blonde ends that scream hipster washout or unemployed undergrad. The current version is far subtler, creating the look of natural depth and a few face-framing streaks to keep it interesting. Brunettes begin their growth with darkest brown and progress gradually into warm caramels or coppers. The lighter version will begin with a light brown or blending into golden blondes with pale tips. Go ahead and scrutinize the head of your nearest 5-year-old fresh from a week at the beach. It’s the look of good living.

Highlights are returning for men. Just a touch of flash in the front. Nothing more.

Whatever your personal style, the message this season is the same. Impact in as few words, actions, and colors as possible. Now lets’ color your hair.
