PREPARATIONSand the surface. Wipe away dust with a damp pa-per towel. Seal the entire surface with multipurpose sealer. Let dry and sand lightly again if needed.

Base Coat the front of the surface with Raw Umber. Allow to dry. Add patches of Russet and Peacock Teal in various spots. Do not add any where the main design will be. Some near the edge of the cup and leaves is okay. Let dry.

Add weathered wood in various spots, avoiding the area where the main design is. Some landing on the diff erent colours, some not. Take a bit over the edge as well. Allow to air dry.

Apply a coat of Bleached Sand all over the surface and lip of the plate. The thicker the paint, the bigger the cracks. Various sized cracks are great! Allow to dry completely.

Using the medium grit sand paper, sand off some of the Bleached Sand to reveal the colours underneath. Do not sand down to the bare wood. Sanding the sur-face along with the cracks, will give it an old weath-ered look. To take it one step further, water down Raw Umber and brush it over the entire surface. Wipe it back before it dries completely. It’s ok to have some areas look darker than others. Allow to dry.

Trace on main project elements and block in all the basecoats:• Cup—Bleached Sand.• Apple—Inside Light Buttermilk. Peeling Hauser

Light Green.• Cider—Raw Sienna• Orange leaves—Orange Twist. If you do not have

Orange Twist, add some White to the Bright Orange and use that to basecoat with.

• Yellow leaf—Antique Gold.• Cinnamon Sticks—Milk Chocolate• Cranberries—Country Red.• Tag—Snow White.

PAINTING INSTRUCTIONSCupDry rub a highlight with Snow White in the centre of the cup and on the handle. Allow to dry and repeat 2-3 times to brighten.

Highlight with Snow White across the top edge of the cup, on the back edge and around the handle.

Shade with Bleached Sand plus a touch of Milk Choco-late. About 2:1. Shade around all the elements at the bottom of the cup. Shade where the handle attaches to the mug. Shade on the inner part of the handle near the bottom and some on the top edge of the handle. Shade the back edge of the cup next to the cider and on either side of the cinnamon stick.

Line and dot the detail on the edge of the cup with Peacock Teal.

CiderHighlight the cider with Honey Brown across the top. Shade the bottom edge and next to the cinnamon stick with Raw Umber.

Orange LeavesUsing the highlighter brushes, dry rub the fi rst high-lights with Bright Orange, Moon Yellow and Cadmium Yellow. Work back and forth between the colours to achieve some bright orange areas and some yellowish areas, still leaning more on the orange side.

Dry rub some darker areas with Persimmon, Canyon Orange and Country Red. Work between these colours to create various darker areas on the leaves.

Using a shade brush, shade with Persimmon behind the apple, the tag and to create the folded part of the leaves.

Line the veins in the leaves with watered down Country Red.

Add extra highlights Bright Orange and Cadmium Yellow on the edge of the folded pieces of the leaves and on some of the tips.

Yellow LeafUsing the highlighter brushes, dry rub a highlight in the middle of the leaf with Moon Yellow. Repeat again by picking up Cadmium Yellow on the dirty brush.

Dry rub a shade next to the apple and towards the centre with Honey Brown. Repeat again by picking up Persimmon on the dirty brush. Keep this darker dry rub close to the apple.

Use a shading brush to shade with Honey Brown next to the apple, on a few of the tips, to create the fold and on the back side of the fold. Add a few touches of

Persimmon in these shaded areas.

Highlight with Cadmium Yellow on some of the tips and on the top edge of the folded over part of the leaf. Add a few touches of Bright Orange in some of the highlight areas if desired.

AppleDry rub a highlight in the centre of the apple with Snow White.

Shade the outer edge of the peeling with Plantation Pine and next to the cranberries. Shade the peeling where the stem is.

Highlight the top edge of the peeling with Moon Yellow.

Basecoat the stem and seeds with Raw Umber.

Shade the bottom of the seeds with Soft Black. High-light the tops with Honey Brown.

Shade the stem by lining some Soft Black down the left side.

Highlight the top and a little down the middle of the stem with Milk Chocolate. Repeat with Honey Brown.

Add touches of Hauser Medium Green in the centre towards the bottom half of the stem.

Line down the centre of the apple with Hauser Light Green, a touch of Moon Yellow and Light Buttermilk.

Shade around the seeds with Moon Yellow.

Shade on the apple next to the peeling with Hauser Light Green.

Line the bottom of the apple core with Raw Umber. Repeat again with a tiny amount of Lamp Black.

Cinnamon SticksDry rub a highlight down the centres of each cinnamon stick with Honey Brown.

Shade to create the curl of the cinnamon sticks on the top and down the centres with Raw Umber. Shade to divide the cinnamon sticks, under the leaf, next to the cranberries, and along the back sides of each one.

Highlight the curl around the top and down the middle on the opposite side of the shade with Honey Brown.

CranberriesHighlight with Berry Red on the top edges. Repeat the highlight with Berry Red plus Neons Fiery Red.

Shade with Soft Black to separate the berries, across the bottoms and where they tuck in behind other things.

If the berries appear too bright or pinkish, wash over

them with Deep Burgundy.

Line the calyx with Soft Black. Highlight the outside edge of the calyx with Moon Yellow.

TagLine “APPLE CIDER” with Hauser Light Green. Dot around the edge with Country Red. Make a hole for the string with Raw Umber.

Shade the left side and across the bottom with Pea-cock Teal.

Line the string with Snow White.

Shade on the cup next to the string with Bleached Sand plus a touch of Milk Chocolate.

“My cup overfl ows”Basecoat with Moon Yellow.

Using a round brush, pick up Light Buttermilk and lightly skim the bristles over the tops and part way down the letters to create a chalky highlight.

Using the same method, shade the bottoms with An-tique Gold.

Create a drop shadow on the left side of the letter with watered down Raw Umber.

Psalm 23:5 is lined with Raw Umber.

FINISHINGShade with Raw Umber under all the elements and walk it out a little ways to give the appearance it sitting on something, rather than just fl oating in the air. Shade around the outside of the cup on the plate.

Dry rub Hauser Light Green on the cup behind the apple. Dry rub Country Red on the cup behind the cranberries. Dry rub Antique Gold on the hand of the cup and a little bit next to the leaf.

Cover the main image with paper towel and spatter Raw Umber all over the piece. Repeat again with Light Buttermilk.

Basecoat the back of the plate with Bleached Sand.

Finish with your favourite varnish. I would recommend DecoArt’s Velvet Touch.
