Personality is a subjectmatter of psychology, the lifehistoryofasinglemanbeingaunitwithwhichthisdisciplinehas to deal. It is not possible to study all human beings orall experiences of one human being. Human beings respondto stimulus. Every response is partially or fully determinedbytheafter-effectsofpreviousexperiences.

The branch of psychology which principally concernsitself with the study of human lives and the factors thatinfluence their course, which investigates individualdifferences and types of personality, may be termedPersonology instead of the Psychology of Personality, aclumsy and tautological expression. This book is entirelybasedonPersonology.

Change in Personality cannot be sudden, alarming orabrupt.Incase,ifithas,itisonlytemporaryandthepersonwouldrevertbacktohisoriginalselfunderstress.So,pleasedontexpecttochangeyourpersonality,allofthesudden.Itis a gradual process and any thing that is gradual, ispermanent. There is no doubt that human nature is suchthat, we go on improving if we have the required urgethroughoutourlife.

Selecting right people for thejobs and placing them inright roles plays an important role in determining, whetherthey are giving their best to the organization. Themethodsof selection have fluctuated from brisk and arbitrary toelaborate and intricate. Through proper selection of the newentrants, it is possible to build a desirable culture anddesirablenormsintheorganizationintheArmedForces.

    Aproper

    helps

    to

This feeling islikely to raise themorale of the employees andmayresultinhigherendsofcommitmentandproductivity.Supplyingtherightpeopletotheorganization.

Onewrong person selected for a givenjob can cause ahost of problems in an organization. Therefore, anorganization should ensure that suitable people arerecruited, even if it involves some investment. There is adifference between the selection system between thecorporate/ private enterprise and the Armed Forces. MyAppointmentwithaPsychologistbyKrishNair&AnoopT.ASPIRANTSPERCEPTIONOFSSBSThe SSBs shoulder the key responsibility of selecting

the Officers of the Armed Forces, who would alwaysbearinmindthatTheSafety, Honour and Welfare of Your Country Comes First,AlwaysandEveryTime. The Honour, Welfare and Comfort of the Men You Command ComesNext.Your Own Ease, Comfort andSafety Comes Last,Always and EveryTime.

-FieldMarshallChetwodeThere is no doubt that, when it comes tomatter of

selection, they need the Right people. Because, you arebeing taken to lead themen inwar. For yourmen, yourorderswouldmean the difference between life and death. One wrong person selected can pose a threat to lives ofmany people. The SSBs would never select the wrongpeopleandrejecttherightones.

Letme give you a common example. Suppose, you goto buy agold coin. Thejeweller hands you the coin and youlook at it in awe, by its glittering external appearance. Bychance, you happen to slide your fingers over it and noticesomeparticlescomingoff.Nowindoubt, youslightlyrubthecoinandfindthereisonlyagoldpolishuponthesurfaceandobserving underneath, you found it to be made of someothermetal. Frankly tellme, would you like to buy such acoin?

This is exactly the sameway, the SSBs function as awhole. Theyjust slide their fingers over the aspirants usingtheir primary techniques (Stage I testing) and see the

MyAppointmentwithaPsychologistbyKrishNair&AnoopT.particles of artificial behaviour coming off.Next, they rubyou over and above, thus revealing your unnatural andfacade personality (Stage II testing). As you didnt buy theabovecoin, theydontwanttobuyyoueither.

On my discussion with a Senior Psychologist, Iencountered a disheartening truth. He toldme that someaspirants genuinely possess the attributes of becoming anofficer, if not every one. Butwhere the problem lies is that, they put a hard shield of artificiality upon themselves andloseflexibility.Nowasmentionedabove, theSSBshavegotloads ofweapons in their armour, to rip and blow off eventhe toughest of the shields that has been put up. And theresult?Pleasetakethecourtesytoimagine.

When I am speaking of the aspirantswho possess thequalities of becoming an officer, Iwould like to quote someimportant points, which I think shouldmake a difference inthinking.

There is a huge difference between the selectionsystemofthecorporate/privateenterprisesandtheArmedForces. The selection at the entry level in theprivate worldis done on as required basis and has the Best Fitphilosophy, meaning that the bestofthe lotisselected.TheArmed Forces has a Right Fit philosophy, wherein theSelection Centres are not aware of the vacancies and theyrecommend aspirants for selection, whom they find fit fortheservices.

ThewideperceptiongapbetweentheBestFitandRightFit is matter of worry and this leads to unnecessaryCompetition.

ThroughoutthehistoryofServicesSelectionSystem,Competitiononlyand itself has never been instrumental nor capable to push theperformances towin therecommendation.

What is Personality? Is it something a few luckypeoplearebornwithagiftfromtheGods?Orisitwithinthereach of everyone? If it can be acquired, thenwhy doesnteveryone develop the kind of personality thatwill bring himsuccess, popularityandhappinessthateveryonewants?Ifitcan be acquired, then why so many people have thepersonalities that bring them the things they do notwant:failure, unhappinessandlackofsocialacceptance?

The termpersonality is derived from the Latinword persona which means mask. To disapprove thetraditional belief that personality is some nebulous, mysterious quality, the studies have suggested that thepersonality pattern is something that can be objectivelyobserved in the speech and actions of the individuals andmeasuredwitharelativedegreeofaccuracy.

Of all the definitions of personality, the mostwidely accepted is the short, but all including definitionproposed by psychologist Gordon W. Allport of HarvardUniversity.Hesaid:

Personality is the dynamic organization, withinthe individual, of those psycho-physical systems, thatdeterminehischaracteristicbehaviororthought.

If we analyze the key words in the abovedefinition, it will give us a comprehensive meaning andconveyhowmuchstressAllporthasplacedonMotivation.

a)Organization: Organization emphasizes thepatterning of independent parts of personalitystructure, each of which has a special relation towhole. It points that personality is notjust the sum

MyAppointmentwithaPsychologistbyKrishNair&AnoopT.of traits, one added to another, but rather that thedifferenttraitsormanifestaspectsofthepersonalitypatternareheldtogetherandinfluencedbyacentralcore, calledtheConceptofSelf

b)Dynamic: Dynamicreferstoconstantlyorchangingnature to personality. Not only does the personalitybecome more complex in structure as theindividuals physical and psychologicalcharacteristics, but from time and from situation tosituation, there are changes in structuralorganization. The changes are not radical nor arethey necessarily permanent. They are, in effect, fluctuationsintheintensityoftraitsalreadypresent. They are thus quantitative rather than qualitativechanges. The dynamic nature of personalityaccounts for the difficulty experienced in trying tomeasureit.

    c) Psycho-physical Systems: A psycho-physicalsystem is composed of habits, attitudes emotionalstates, sentimentally, motives and beliefs all ofwhich allare psychologicalbut have a physicalbasisin the individuals neural, glandular or general bodystates.

d)Determine: Theworddetermine emphasizes themotivational role of psycho-physical systems.Withinthe individual, these systems lie behind specific actsand influence the form they will take. Once anattitude, belief, habit, sentiment or some otherelement of psychophysical systems has beenarousedbyastimulus, either fromtheenvironment, orwithin the individual, it provokes and expressesadjective act which are characteristic form ofexpressionofthatindividual.

    28/133

MyAppointmentwithaPsychologistbyKrishNair&AnoopT.e)Characteristic: The adjectivecharacteristicrefersto the distinctiveness or uniqueness of the personsbehavior as an expression of the pattern of hisparticular psycho-physical systems. Even thebehavior and concepts that people apparently sharewithothersareinrealityindividual. Some, ofcourse, are less idiosyncratic than other but none lacks apersonalflavor.

    f) Behavior and Thought: Together, behavior andthought is a blanket to designate anythingwhatsoever an individual may do. And what thepersondoesmainlyisadjusttoenvironment, thoughhemay also reflect on it. Thismeans that patternsof behavior, determined by the psycho-physicalsystemswithin the individual, are not aimless, butaredirectedtowardsgoaloffittingtheindividualintothe physical and social environment in which helives.

PersonalityisUniqueAs Allport has said, each person isunique and never

repeated phenomenon. Each person is unique in that, itdiffers from all other patterns in the combination andorganization of its constituent traits, in the strength ofdifferent traits, and in its core- the persons concept ofhimself. While a persons attributes may be qualitativelysimilartothoseofotherpeople, eachofhisattributesdiffersquantitatively from those of other. Youmay, for example, find any number of bravemen, but each mans braverywilldifferquantitatively fromthatoftheother.

    29/133

MyAppointmentwithaPsychologistbyKrishNair&AnoopT.CausesofIndividualitya) Individuality is a course of both heredity and

environment. As Allport pointed out, Naturesmethod of sexual reproduction guaranteessuperlatively novel genetic equipment for everymortal that is born. Each of the 46 chromosomesthat appear in a newly formed cell which willeventually develop into a new human being containsapproximately 30,000 genes or carriers of individualtraits. The likelihood of duplication of this hereditaryendowment, as has been estimated is, one in 300billion.

    b) Since, at everymoment, the individual iswithin theenvironmentwhichlargelydeterminesitsbehavior.Itis therefore important to define the environment, since two individuals may behave differently onlybecause; they are, by chance encountering differentconditions. No two human beings (with the possibleexception of identical twins) have even thepotentialityof developing alike, especiallywhen toallthese genetic differencewe add the differences thatwilloccurintheenvironmentandexperiencesofeachmortalperson.

    c) The uniqueness of each individuals personality isthusderivedfromacombinationof:

    AFactorsorConstitutionalFactors.BFactorsorHereditaryFactors.

Both of these vary from person to person.Furthermore, the effect of environmental simulation isinfluenced by others, past and present, bothconstitutional and environmental. Even when thehereditaryendowmentisidentical, asinidenticaltwins,

    RoleofHeredityThe personality pattern is inwardly

determinedbyandcloselyassociatedwiththematuringof physical andmental characteristicswhich constitutethe individualshereditaryendowment.Although, socialand other environmental factors affect the form thepersonalitypatterntakes, itisnotinstilledorcontrolledfromwithout butevolvesfrom thepotentialswithintheindividual. The principle raw materials of personalityphysique, intelligence and temperament are results ofheredity. How they will develop will depend onenvironmentalinfluences.

ConceptofSelfThe personality pattern is composed of core

or center of gravity called the Concept of Self andintegrated systems of learned responses, called traits. These are interrelated, with the core influencing the traits, which are the individuals characteristic methods ofadjustment to life situation. To show the inter-relationship,the pattern can be compared to awheel inwhich the hubrepresents the concept of self and the spokes represent thetraits. Just as the spokes of thewheel are held in positionand, thus influenced bythe hub, so the traits areinfluencedbytheConceptofSelf.

TraitsThe personality pattern is unified multi-dimensional

    patterns.

    The

Concept of Self is the true core or center of gravity of thepattern. Personality traits have been described and definedin many ways though most of the descriptions anddefinitions are similar in that they include certain commonsalient points.A trait has been described as an aspect ofdimensionorpersonalitywhichconsistsofagroupofrelatedand consistent reaction characteristic of persons typicaladjustment. MyAppointmentwithaPsychologistbyKrishNair&AnoopT.Since the persons characteristic ways of reacting arelearned, each new reaction is influenced to some extentby the success the person has had in his previousadjustment to similar reactions. As a result, the traitswhile being predictable are not automatic acts whichoccur in the same form every time they are aroused bythecoreofpersonalitypattern-ConceptofSelf.Allporthasstressed the role of learning in bringing about slightvariations a predictable manner a person adjusts tosituations.

The trait clusters are divided into two categories; Surfaceand Source traits. Surface traits are those that show theinfluence of environmentalmolding andwhich thereforevary in different cultures.Source traits are environmentalor constitutional factors so basic that they apply in anycultureandinfluencemanydifferencesurfacetraits.CharacteristicsofTraitsEvery trait has three characteristics: Uniqueness,

It is, by now a well established fact that theenvironment plays a very important role in moulding apersonality.

a)The environment influences a personality pattern byproviding themodels from a person to imitate, byproviding opportunities for learning culturallyapprovedpatternsofbehaviorandbypreventingthelearningofdisapprovedpatterns.

b)Anothermajor influence of the environment comesfrom the opportunities and motivation, it providesforlearning.Studies also show that personality moulding

begins early in life and that the early years are thecritical ones. Once the foundation is laid, theenvironmental influences become less importantwitheach passing year. The environmental sources ofpersonalitymolding include the family, the school, thepeer group, mass media, religion and personsoccupation. Studies of long term persistence show thatrelativelyminorchangesoccurintheConceptofSelforthepersonscharacteristicmethodofadjustingtolife.

It is not easy to change the concept of self of anindividualafter he hascrossed acertain age, since it ismadeofattitudes, values, beliefsandaspirationswhichare established early in life andbecomefixedwithage. The core qualities or the source qualities are moredetermined by heredity. They are inborn and innatetraitswhich persist despite environment. An intelligentperson can put up a front and hide it with hisintelligence and skills, but they will always surfacewhen under stress. The Psychological Testing is a priceless tool designedforthe observation ofhumanbeingsrespondingto avarietyofcontrolledconditions, conditionswhichresembleasnearlyas possible those of everyday life, and of course, someunusual conditions. It helps in recording various emotionaland behavioral reactions, what previous experiencesdeterminedthem, towhatdegreeandwhatmanner.

It is based on the very popular psychological theorythat In every living Organism, a Stimulus creates aResponse.

    Stimulus Response

    ThetechniqueemployedattheselectioncentreisProjectiveTesting.ProjectiveTesting

ThewordProjection has two psychological useswhichcanbeclearlydistinguished;theseareinpsychotherapyandexploration of personality. In psychotherapy, the projectionprocess implies the referral or attributing of ones ownrepressed emotional trends to others. In exploration ofpersonality, a projective is onewhich aims at exteriorizing,

    43/133

MyAppointmentwithaPsychologistbyKrishNair&AnoopT.that is, as if projecting on screen a spontaneous writtenbehaviourorbasicinterpersonalattitudes.

These have been widely used in personalityassessment. The projective technique stem from the ideathat what one perceives in the world around him isinfluenced by his own personality, his needs, his attitudesetc. As Tomlinson has rightly saidWe see things not asthey are, but as we are! These tests are conducted undertime and space pressure so as to elicit from the individual, his unrestricted and free responses to stimulus situations. The assumption is thatwhat he perceives and records asresponses is a projection of his own self. These techniquespermit as in the Thematic Apperception Test (TAT); freeassociationtoasetofselectedwordsasinWordAssociationTest (WAT); or responses to verbally presented problemsituations as in case of Situation Reaction Test (SRT). TheTAT,WAT and SRT constitute the battery of projective testsusedbythepsychologistsintheSSBs.

There is also SelfDescription (SD) throughwhich theindividual projects his attitude towards himself, othersattitude towards him and his capacity for objective selfestimation. This is interpreted in the light of other datapresented in TAT,WAT and SRT. The rating achieved in theintelligence test is also referred to by the psychologist as avaluable input. These techniques help in finding out theindividuals inner feelings, fears, hopes, attitudes and goal:his adjustment to work and people and his sense ofresponsibility, the impact he creates on others by hisintellectual, social, emotional, andmoral qualities and alsohis leadership potential. The psychologist goes aboutinterpreting the individuals reactions to various stimulipresented in different tests and then goes on tomake amentalpictureofvarioustraitsoftheindividualspersonalityandtheirrelevancevariousOLQs.

ThestoryrevealstheidentificationofaHeroandasuitable Hero too completely. There is logicalconnection between the situation and the point ofstart. The situation is fire in the house and theman responsible for the point of start isHerowhowas on theway to his college and his presence inthesituationisjustified.TheSRT(SituationReactionTest)isacollectionofroutine situations, but the TAT is a situation ofbeyondroutine.Another requirement is the element of desirabilitymust be there. It happenswhen there is havoc, here thewomaniscryingto prevent and theHeroisfightingtocooldownthefire.Theremustbewillto do and skill to performwhich is being revealedfromthefightingskilloftheHero.
