TRANSCRIPT

  • OmniScan MX2 Training ProgramGate Configuration

  • 2MX2 Training Program - Gates Overview There are 3 gates available in the MX2:

    1. Gate A (Red). Primary inspection and C-scan gate. 2. Gate B (Green). Secondary inspection and C-scan gate.3. Gate I (Yellow). Synchronization gate.

Gates can be modified directly on the touch screen display on the A-scan, B-scan, and S-scan through use of the gate function key, or in the Gate\Alarm>Gate sub menu.

  • 3MX2 Training Program - Gates Overview cont. The primary functions of gates A (Red) and B (Green) are:

Selection of relevant A-scan for trigonometry readings such as true depth (DA), sound path (SA) surface distance (PA), etc.

Selection of relevant A-scan for thickness readings, statistics, and strip charts. Selection of relevant A-scan for calibration functions. (Gate A only) Selection of relevant A-scan display data source options for normal, highest,

thinnest auto A-scan tracking. (Gate A only) Define and generate amplitude C-scan. Define and generate position C-scan.

The primary functions of gate I (Yellow) are: Synchronization of the A-scan to component interface. Typical of immersion tank,

Hydroform corrosion mapping, and composite inspections. Synchronization of gate A and gate B to create floating gates. Gates A and B

float on component interface position from gate I and are repositioned dynamically. Typical of immersion tank and Hydroform inspection.

  • 4MX2 Training Program - Gates Overview cont. Each gate can be turned off of the display independently in

Display>Overlay>Gates sub menu but remain active and record data at all times.

Gates should be kept within the A-scan range at all times so as to not affect PRF or acquisition speed unnecessarily.

Signals in the gates that are outside the A-scan range will appear in the C-scan but not in the S-scan.

Gate data is recorded independently from the digitized A-scan and provides 10 bit C-scan data and readings. (0-200% amplitude)

10 bit data is converted to 8 bit data if the gate is repositioned in analysis or pause mode. (0-100% amplitude)

Gate alarms and analog outputs are covered in detail in a later section. Thickness functions are covered in detail in the analysis section for position

C-scan. Gates position and mode are normally set for the entire group but can be set

individually for each focal law by changing the gate mode parameter from group to context in Preferences>Setup>Category>Gates>Gate Mode >By Group or By Context.

  • 5MX2 Training Program - Gate Function Key Gate Position A short stroke of the gate function

key changes the touch screen to gate mode and displays the gate A start parameter in the upper left hand corner of the display.

In gate mode all gates can be modified directly on the touch screen. Tap and drag the gate to the new position.

Successive short strokes of the gate function key will toggle through all displayed gates for the start, width, and threshold parameters allowing modification without changing menus.

A long stroke of the gate function key opens the Gate\Alarms>Gate sub menu.

  • 6MX2 Training Program - Gate Position - Weld In this example the sector scan is inspecting a 16mm V weld from one side. Both the range and gate A position must be set so that the entire weld is covered, the

C-scan generated is as efficient as possible, and the maximum number of A-scan points are in the area of interest.

The entire weld is within gate A ensuring the C-scan displays full coverage.

  • 7MX2 Training Program - Gate Position Corrosion Mapping \ TOF In this example of corrosion mapping on a 10mm thick pipe, gate A is positioned near

the surface interface and extends across the first backwall. Gate B is positioned after the first backwall and extends across the second backwall. The position C-scan (Thickness C-scan) is generated from the crossing signal ( \ )

gate B-A and can be reconfigured in analysis mode if necessary.

  • 8MX2 Training Program Gate Configuration Gate Modes Overview Gate mode is set in the

Gate\Alarms>Gate>Parameters>Mode sub menu and determines the point in the gate that is used for the readings and C-scan data.

There are 3 measure options for position C-scan and thickness or time of flight related readings: A. First crossing\edge. B. First Peak Position. C. Maximum Peak Position.

There are 2 peak options for amplitude C-scan and related readings: D. First Peak Amplitude. E. Maximum Peak Amplitude.

The relative peak and measure mode will be displayed in the reading box when applicable.

  • 9MX2 Training Program - Gate Mode Weld Inspection The gate mode typically used for weld inspection will generate the amplitude C-

scan and related readings based on the max peak signal in gate A. Both amplitude and position readings from max peak signal.

  • 10

MX2 Training Program - Gate Mode Corrosion Mapping\Composite The gate mode typically used for corrosion mapping and composite inspections will

generate the position C-scan and thickness or time of flight related readings based on the crossing edge signal (/) of gate A.

MX2 Training Program Gate Trigonometry Readings

    PA

    DA

    SA

    RA

The readings are relative to the selected A-scan in the group and based on the gate configuration for either peak or leading edge options.

The volumetric readings are available for gate A and gate B. Gate A readings are boxed in red and gate B readings are boxed in green. The full list of available readings and definitions is found in the MX2 software

users manual or online help index.

MX2 Training Program Gate Trigonometry Readings cont. Trigonometry readings are configured in Measurement>Readings and can

be individually configured in two groups of 4 readings. (8 total) Readings are also preconfigured in groups by application in

Measurement>Reading>Measurement Mode. The 8 readings selected will appear in the defect table and report that is

explained in a later section. Tapping this area of the touch screen will toggle between list one and two.
