TRANSCRIPT

  • Part and Weld WizardOmniScan MX2 Training Program

  • 2OmniScan MX2 Training Part and Weld Wizards Overview The OmniScan MX2 part and group wizards are designed to

make the task of creating new groups and copying or modifying existing groups fast.

The software will give us step by step guidance in a logical sequence for populating the essential parameters required by the focal law calculator.

The OmniScan has a limit of 8 groups that can be a combination of phased array, conventional pulse echo, conventional pitch-catch, or TOFD.

The total number of A-scans or focal laws on all groups cannot exceed 256.

Additionally, during the wizard steps many parameters of the inspection such as the weld overlay, scanner information, probe orientation, etc will be populated.

  • 3OmniScan MX2 Training Part and Weld Wizard Overview cont. The part and weld wizard is the first of four primary wizard

functions that are used to prepare an inspection or .Ops file in the MX2.

The parameters of the part and weld wizard are common to all of the groups created. That is why it is separated from the setup and focal law wizards.

The part wizard contains the following functions that are common to all groups in the .Ops file: Material Thickness. Material. This will associate a velocity to the group for later

selection of shear\long. CSC Mode. Plate\OD\ID geometry. Weld Overlay creation. Weld overlays assist in analysis by

superimposing an image of the weld on the data.

  • 4OmniScan MX2 Training Part and Weld Wizard Overview Each step in the wizard process is completed prior to selecting next. Each task

is explained in the next series of slides. Below is the entire wizard sequence.

  • 5Part and Weld Wizard Overview Material Thickness The material thickness is not

directly related to the focal law formation but is necessary for the skip lines on the A-scan and S-scan, and the trigonometry readings such as DA (Depth of signal in gate A).

Material and material thickness are entered during the part wizard process and can also be modified in Group\Probe\Part>Part submenu.

Material Thickness can be changed at anytime without affecting the beam or calibration.

  • 6Part and Weld Wizard Overview Material Velocity The material selection is relative to velocity and associates both the shear and

longitudinal velocity for use later in the focal law section of the wizard. Use of materials that are not in the database must be entered directly in UT

Settings>General>Velocity. The velocity of the material and wedge are essential parameters for the focal law

calculator and beam forming. Angle 1 degree angle accuracy and proper beam formation the material velocity must be within +\- 50 meters per second of the real velocity.25-70 degrees shear has < 12 meter/sec velocity deviation

  • 7Part and Weld Wizard Overview CSC Mode CSC (Circumferential scanning mode) is relative to the trigonometry readings such

as depth (DA) and surface distance (PA). The COD inspection for the OmniScan MX2 requires that the focal laws be built with

an external focal law calculator and imported into the OmniScan MX2 for use. Only plate is supported directly in the MX2 software. A pipe to pipe girth weld in skew 90\270 inspection is considered plate because the

ID and OD surfaces on parallel.

  • 8Part and Weld Wizard Overview Weld Overlay There are seven default weld types available

in the wizard from which almost any weld can be created.

Any of these welds can be divided into four sections:

    1. Root (Size and angle)2. Land (Size and offset)3. Hot pass (Height, angle, or radius)4. Fill (Height and angle)

Some weld types may not require all four sections. For any section not required enter 0mm for the size or height.

There are options for symmetrical and asymmetrical welds.

The weld overlay on the MX2 is only available on the S-scan.

    OmniScan MX2 Exercise Use of Part and Weld Wizard1. Select Menu>File>New. 2. Select Menu>Wizard>Part & Weld>Start.3. Enter Thickness = 16mm.4. Material = Steel, Mild.5. CSC Mode = Plate.6. Select Next.7. Select Weld = V Offset.8. Symmetry = Symmetric.9. Select Next.10. Enter Land Height = 1mm, Land Offset = .5mm.11. Select Next.12. Enter HP (Hot pass) Height = 0mm, Angle = 0 degrees.13. Select Next.14. Enter Fill = 30 degrees15. Select Next.16. Select Finish. At this point the part and weld wizard is complete.
