HowMuchIsMyBoatWorth?

MattLubaway, Editor

It won’t be much longer now. Spring is in the air and if you are not yet getting your boat ready for the water, you may at least be planning for that day. “I can hardly wait.” you say to yourself.

We all have a ritual, what ever it is; take an inventory of the "ishing tackle, arrange your tackle by "ishing species, take a few practice casts on the lawn or possibly even wax the boat (good grief). Well I have one practice that you should put into your SpringRituals. It just happens to be a subject that I see is most often neglected. You need to answer these questions:

“If I should lose my boat and or sports "ishing equipment how much will I receive to replace it?” “What is the current value of my stuff?” “How much will I receive from the insurance company?”

“Am I paying too much premium based on the policy limit and value of my boat?”

You don’t want any surprises here. So here are a few issues to consider before you make any decisions;

ActualCashValue settlement (ACV). Most boat policies pay similar to car insurance, based on the original cost minus depre-ciation. This amount may be close but not the same as it’s Market Value (MV) or used Retail Value (RV)

ReplacementCost endorsements (RC). Your policy may indicate replacement cost, but you need to know what restrictions are in the policy. The de"initions in many policies stipulate very speci"ic limitations where Replacement Cost applies. For example, does the replacement cost provision ‘drop off’ after the boat is three years old? What if I do not replace it with a similar boat? Or choose not to replace it at all?

Motor,Trailers,EquipmentandPersonalBelonging. Each insurance company provides coverage in it’s own unique way. They are either listed as separate items, or lumped together in one total Limit of coverage. It pays to "ind out how yours are insured, or if they are insured at all. Keep in mind if these values are included, be sure your policy limits are high enough.

All this being said; I often "ind that boat insurance policies OVERSTATE the value of the boat and motor. Let’s take a look at an example to illustrate;

Let’s say you bought you 20’ Lund boat in February,2006for$38,000,including)ish-)inder,GPS,cockpitcov-er,electricdownriggersandtrailer.Youhaveitinsuredforthatamount,forreplacementcost.Youhaveatheftclaim this June 2011, and )ind out the adjuster is onlyoffering you $18,900 ACV, because your replacementcost coverage isonlygood for5 years, andyouare re-quired to list the trailer and any motor, attachment, accessories, or trailers separately. OUCHTHIS IS GO-ING TO HURT. To add insult, none of your )ishingequipmentiscoveredeither.

In this situation, too much premium was paid for boat coverage and incorrect coverage was provided. Of course it is just as easy to UNDERSTATE the value of a boat.

A second issue is how easy it is to "ind out a good‘ball-park’value for your boat quickly using the Internet. Three reputable and popular PRICING GUIDES can give you a handful of estimates in minutes. NADA Guides www.nadaguides.com/boats (less acceptable by Insurers) BUC Value www.bucvalu.com (three boat estimates for free) Price Digests www.pricedigests.com/boats/bvboats.htm (costs a bunch) Go there now and get started on your insurance Spring Cleanup.

Although just one example of how things can go wrong, it illustrates the necessity to review your insurance, before you have a loss and before you take it out on the water.

I can help you with your questions or issues if you have them, just give me a call.

Hello Spring,

What a winter we have had. I hear the ice is starting to leave the lakes and on the water, "ishing will be starting very soon. Hurray! Hurray!

On another positive note, as you may have heard, our March Sportsman’s Banquet was a huge success. I want to thank everyone who helped from the set-up to the clean-up; what a great group of people you are. A very special THANK YOU to Marty Drum for the outstanding job you did and the unsel"ish amount of time you put into the banquet all year to make it such a success.

There has been a lot of dialog lately on e-mail about the Captain Of The Year Award scoring system. Last year, the board of directors made a decision that the rules and scoring was to be resolved by the April membership meeting. I plan to uphold that decision. I would like the "inal results of all of this dialog ready and prepared for a vote at the April membership meeting so we can get on with our "ishing tournaments knowing the rules.

April and May should continue to be exciting meetings with outstanding speakers both months.

Please do not forget, we have to vote on changes to our by-laws at the April membership meeting. We may have to vote on some changes to our "ishing tournament rules also, so your attendance will be appreciated. Remember this is your club and you do have a voice.

I have another request. Debbie Curbey is in need of assistance to help with the food and drink table at our meeting. If she does not get help, we will have to discontinue our food services. Mitch Curbey has taken other employment and will not be available for club meetings. We sure want to thank Mitch for all his "ine work.

I am looking forward to a great Spring "ishing season with the many events the club has planned. I hope everyone in the club is doing likewise.

In closing, I would like to say how grateful I am for the outstanding people that step up and take part in our club activities. Your dedication and enthusiasm makes my job a pleasure.

Remember, “Let’s have some fun, learn some new things about "ishing and socialize with new and present members.”

See you at our April meeting.

OperationInjuredSoldierNeedsYourHelp

At Outdoorama, a number of Steelheaders were intrigued by the goal of a group of ad-mirable volunteers. We had time to hear about the deeds of these soldiers and civilian heroes helping our stricken heroes.

ThegoalofOperationInjuredSoldiersistohelpourwoundedheroesgetbackto

doingthesportsandhobbiestheyenjoyedbeforebeingdeployed.

They raise funds to provide hunting, "ishing, and camping trips, along with many other outdoor recreational activities, to our disabled heroes to help with their physical and mental rehabilita-tion. Through corporate sponsorships and indi-

vidual donations, these trips are provided at no cost to our injured heroes.

Operation Injured Soldiers was founded by a veteran of the war in Iraq who was wounded in the line of duty. During his recovery, he dreamed of helping other veterans with disabilities get back to the normal activities of life.

Today, there are more than 2 million disabled veterans who have been severely wounded in the line of duty. This "igure does not include the growing number of sol-diers who suffer from PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder). All of these soldiers had dreams about what their future would be like. These dreams were shattered for many in the line of duty.

They have dedicated their time to connect with individuals wishing to provide a token of appreciation to the brave men and women who have fought for our nation's free-dom.

This "thank you" is a small price to pay for all that they have given to us. Without them, the U.S. would not be the great coun-try that it is today.

They have asked MetroWestSteelheadersto volunteer your time and skills to provide memorable "ishing opportunities to these brave men and women. In particular, they would like to us to take a few soldiers along with us on some of our regular-ly scheduled "ishing outings or tournaments. AprilisSteelheadRiverFishingMonth

This month we have three steelhead river "ishing events. April 2nd the Clinton River Steelhead Outing and April 9th the Huron River Steel-head Outing back to back weekend events.

The Clinton River Outing takes place at Yates Park, where Avon Road crosses the Clinton River at Dequindre Road across from Yates Cider Mill in Rochester Hills.

The Huron River Outing takes place at Huroc Park one block west of Telegraph Road and Huron River Drive in Flat Rock.

Both of these events are a learning and information experience for techniques on how to "ish for Steelhead and to raise awareness about these great watersheds close to home. There will be presentations starting at around 9:00am. In the morning we will have hot coffee and Danish. Mid-day we will be serving hot soup and hot dogs. At the Huron River Outing help support our friends and partners in this event. The Huron River Fishing Association will be sponsor-ing a Steelhead Tournament from 7:00am to 3:00pm with a entry fee of only $6.00. Remember to bring a can of soup either chicken noodle or vegetable non creamy.

On April 30th will be the Ohio Steelhead Alley Outing. We will be go-ing to the Rocky River just west of Cleveland or the Vermillion in Ver-million, Ohio. As we get closer to the event I will "ind out which river is producing the better results. So after you learn how to "ish on the Clinton and Huron River you can use your new learned "ishing skills in Ohio, where last year 14 of us had a total of 83 hook-ups - this is a phenomenal Steelhead "ishery.

There will be no sign up for the Clinton or Huron River. If you can help set up our "ish camp at around 7:00am or take down 1:00pm it would be greatly appreciated. I will have information and a sign- up sheet for the Ohio Steelhead Alley Outing at the next general membership meet-ing April 5th. You will receive points toward the "Angler of the Year" award at all three of these events.

I got the day off Friday (Snow Day at the school I work at). I decided to talk the wife into letting me go to the Clinton for a bit. I got to Yates a little after noon, and was leaving by 2:45. I "ished three holes and both "ish came from the same hole, ten minutes apart. One hen, around 4-5lbs and a nice male that weighed 13lbs and measured just over 34 inches. I fought the big male for about 20 minutes and thought there was no way I was getting him in. He made several darts toward log jams and rolled on the surface 6 or so times. Both "ish came on spawn. Water clarity was perfect. Not bad for 2 hours of "ish-ing.

Sportsman'sBanquetReport Fellow Steelheaders, Our 2011 Sportsman's Banquet was another huge success. We had 240 people in attendance and raised $14,205.

We had many generous sponsors. We received $7755 worth of donations. Be sure to check out our sponsors in the newsletter. They supported us; so lets see if we can return the favor. Burton

Manor did a great job as always. Some of the highlights were:

Dennis Kelley won the walleye trip with Capt.Nick for selling 40 tickets, the most sold. Clyde Schoen won the Best Chance Too charter (I will keep bugging him until he invites me)

Phil Drum won the $250.00 Cabelas gift card for the Captains drawing (no bugging needed).

I pulled the winning gun raffle ticket while I was talking to the winning guest. Jim Vasher won the Grand Prize and chose the Kimber Rifle. Thanks to those of you who helped get donations, set up the hall, sold tickets, and those of you who sacrificed a lot of time. Especially my su-per wife Kelly and my daughters Sarah and Jennifer. It is truly a team effort. Without all your help this banquet would not have been possible. Feel free to email any com-ments or suggestions. Thank you,

I spoke with Lt. Cdr. Will Nab-ach from the US Coast Guard of"ice in Milwaukee, Wisconsin today and he assured me that at the operational level of the US Coast Guard there will be no extension of enforcement of Sec. 618 to pleasure boaters who venture 3 miles offshore to have a EPIRB on board. The Guard will enforce the require-ment on commercial vessels currently required to have the beacons on board but will not extend the regulation’s applica-tion to recreational boaters or "ishermen. He anticipates that no action to extend the scope of Sec. 618 will occur this year and wishes all of us a safe boat-ing season. DennisEade

MUCC Region IV meeting notes , 2/28/2011 Per DNR Wildlife Biologist Jeff B.; Walleye have not been raised due to the fear of spreading VHS. Now it is known that Walleye do not carry VHS. Walleye this March are to be raised at full capacity in MI. Massive shad die off’s are coming and no pike are being raised at this time. Allocation for Lake Erie walleye will be done in March and will take effect in May. Canada is staying at 6 as they do not confer with the US on Allocation. Remember this is only Lake Erie.

Don who is an aid to Congresswomen Candice Miller, said Candice is a member of MUCC, the NRA and she hunts and "ishes.

She is in favor of hunting in the Huron-Manistee forest and is currently involved in the matter. She is also on the Transportation Committee with the Army Corp of Engineers. Also she is involved with homeland security. Her rep wanted us to know that 43% of our southern board-ers are protected but only 3% of our northern boarders are protected. Also she is involved in ship ballast water program to control invasive species.

Macomb County Co. Kris Kiel wanted us to know that they are trying to do their best, but it is a losing battle with the courts. The courts usu-ally have no idea and could not be bothered with hunting and "ishing laws and consider them to be not worth the time.

Tim Payne Wildlife Supervisor DNR (Hunting), The new Guiding Principal System (GPS) program is ready to implement. There is a program for reintroduction of pheasants and pheasant habitat , including increased hunter access property. He also stated that the DNR looked into the Feral Swine issue and there is no problem with swine in MI at this time.

Other MUCC Issues 1. Baiting deer is going to be a big issue in the coming months. 2. Opening day of Deer season is being considered to be moved to the Saturday closest to the 15th to allow increased hunter numbers. 3. Once again MUCC is asking for volunteers to sponsor cabins or supplies for camp. I have a wish list given to me by MUCC, along with a

map of the camp. 4. Our local MUCC District 1 is having a fund raiser bene"it Dinner on Thursday May 12 at 6 pm at the Western Wayne County Conserva-

Guest: none.

VicePresident,JimRobertson: Announced that Dan Kiefer and he had attended the meeting with John Goss, the Obama Administration's so-called "Asian carp Czar" in Ypsilanti. He proceeded to give us his report (Dan had given his version at the general membership meeting a week prior). He announced the speakers for the April general membership meeting as fol-lows: Jerry Lee on Salmon & Walleye, Chip Cartwright on Silver Streak lures, and Marty Drum doing his line winding in the background.

Mark Platt brought up the problem of trying to cram too much in one meeting; at the last meeting we had to rush member-ship reports and Dan Kiefer’s report from the carp czar, but still did not have enough time for Captain Dave Engel and Captain Bill Bale “Best Chance Too” "ishing team. Jim suggested starting meetings earlier.

Secretary,MarkPlatt:Clyde asked for vote to accept minutes as written, passed.

Treasurer,CarmenZirles:Clyde asked for vote to accept treasure’s report, passed.

Carmen was also asked to get the suggestions from donation committee going.

Back to the raf"le license business, MUCC wanted this indemni"ication clause with their name in it and the board approved it.

INSURANCE AND INDEMNIFICATION CLAUSE to MUCC AGREEMENT

16. INSURANCE AND INDEMNIFICATION: The Club shall name MUCC as an additional insured by endorse-ment or some other method with the same effect for activities contemplated by this Agreement.

The Club shall indemnify and hold harmless MUCC, its of"icers, directors, agents, employees, successors and assigns from any and all claims or actions arising out of the activities contemplated by this Agreement.

What “the Indemnity clause” basically means is that MWS is giving MUCC protection from penalties or lia-bilities arising from acts committed or caused by MUCC/MWS.

MUCCRep,DaveSgromolo:Still looking for that MUCC "ishing report, not hunting.

MarkDavis:Met with River and Stream Committee before general membership meeting on March 1st, minutes, new rules and schedule will be published in the near future.

JimDrews: Had talked to Marty in regards to The Sportsman’s Banquet. Has a few estimates as far as the numbers but we want Marty to have the honors of the "inal report.

MattLubaway:Will do up a letter introducing Operation Injured Soldiers. He also passed out a list of people helping out with raising Salmon in the Classroom, getting a good response. MUCC is having a meeting about uni"ication on March 19th. Jim R., Tom T. and Dave S. are planning on attending.

GreggRuggles:No report from Mike in regard to Metro West Wear, board suggested maybe quarterly reports instead of monthly.

TomTaylor:Regarding tournaments, Tom will contact Dennis Kelly to have the 2011 Tournament Rules available for publi-cation for the April newsletter.

MitchCurbey: Everything is "ine with refreshments at general membership meetings.

OldBusiness:Still need policy on use of clubs assets (equipment). Member misconduct bylaw revisited (this will be incor-porated into Captain of the Year) see new business.

NewBusiness:Henry made the motion, Mitch 2nd it that the kids "ishing licenses will be bought for the 1st 33 kids doing the "ishing machine at the upcoming boat show.

Gregg Ruggles initiated a conversation regarding the Captain of the Year points system. Spent a little time talking about it but everybody was pretty well in unison this was not a board topic. Mark Platt also wanted something done so as to encourage member participation at club fundraisers and tournaments. Henry has put together a Captain and Crew of the Year review including history, rules and concerns and a ballot with some new ideas. An e-mail will go out explaining everything and a short meeting along with the vote before the next general membership meeting. Captain of the Year contest was not resolved at the board meeting. Conversation and voting will continue with the membership.

MSSFAStateBoardMeeting01/22/2011Notes Metro West was well represented at this state board meeting with VP Jim Robertson, "illing in for President Clyde Schoen, Henry Nabors and Steve Flavin our alternate state director and myself. There were about 40 directors, presidents and board members from the various MSSFA chapters which "iled up the conference room at MUCC headquarters. After introductions, President Rick Balabon reported the following items. The DNR will resume stocking walleye in inland lakes. VHS disease appears to be under control thanks in part to efforts by anglers who "ish with live bait and also reporting of "ish with the tell-tale sores to the DNR. In the battle against zebra and quagga mussels, bio-logical controls are being looked into. It is hoped that a natural control for these invasive pests can be found. Michigan Attorney General Bill Shultee will continue the efforts of Mike Cox on the Asian Carp problem. A new website www.Activistangler.com will follow concerns of "ishermen across the USA. A more detailed report is in the President’s page of the Great Lake Sport"ishing News, our state newspaper. Two members of Michigan Sea Grant made a “Turning Point” software survey with all present participating in a multiple choice program. They, Sea Grant, use the informal results from these surveys to see what the different outdoor organizations think on similar subjects. This information is presented at the Great Lakes workshops for Lakes Michigan, Huron and Erie. MSSFA will have a membership drive in 2011 and for every new member that you sponsor, your name will be en-tered into a prize drawing for a GPS, trolling combo’s’, downrigger weights and more. Metro West member, Jeff Bustos, won the grand prize a few years back and we seem to be in the lead statewide for new members so Metro West has a good chance to win some of these prizes. The MSSFA Executive Director’s report will be posted on our website on the Conservation page to save space in the newsletter. Take time to read it. Dennis Eade, the director, is presenting a lot of information putting out a de-tailed report. I have agreed to chair the state stream committee for the next year and Clint Pollack from the White River chapter will assist. I would like someone who "ishes the Lake Huron side and has knowledge of the area to give me reports I could use in my state board reports so that the east side of the state gets represented – Lake Erie too. Contact me if you are interested. LenardPietila, State Director Metro West

MSSFAStateBoardMeeting03/09/2011Notes

Kelly Smith, the Fisheries Chief of the DNR, dropped by with a couple of items of interest to us. There will be an Emergency Change Order for Lake Trout in northern Lake Huron, Management Unit MH-1. The maximum size will change from 27” to 24” and will take effect May 1st. This order was issued after the 2011 guide was printed so there will be postings in the area and there will be some leniency in enforcement. The Unit MH-1 is in the area under the jurisdiction of the Tribal Consent Agreement and is necessary so as not to exceed the total weight quota. See page 11 in the 2011 Michigan Fishing Guide for an area map. The lamprey control budget has been reduced by the federal government. It is feared that any cut in funding will allow lamprey numbers to return to where they were with the disastrous effects on the Great Lakes "isheries that they once had. Michigan House Bill 4111 would allow the DNR to use outside or volunteer help in things like net pen feeding and care and the creel census. The employees union of the DNR opposes this if the work was previously done by DNR employees. This was an unscheduled visit by Kelly Smith, but we made time for him and it’s good to see that he is on a "irst name basis with many MSSFA state board members. President Rick Balabon report: A reminder that if you "ill your boats fuel tank at a non-marine pump not to use the ethanol mixture as it can cause moisture problems in the tank. Greg Gumbrecht the membership chairman sent out 900 letters to former members and so far 15 have re-joined in the "irst month. Again Rick stated that if each of us could get one person to join, MSSFA’s "inancial dif"iculties would be solved. Our Executive Director, Dennis Eade, has been busy in 2011. He had a conference call with Dennis Muchmore and Bill Rustem of the Snyder administration to "ind out where they stand on our concerns. Dennis felt the conversa-tion went well and with Muchmore formerly being with MUCCC, we have an “ear” in the governor’s of"ice. Dennis’ complete report is in the MSSFA website and I will also put it on our Conservation page on our website. Ken Merkle, the MSSFA legislative director, read a letter he drafted on behalf of MSSFA to the U.S. Congress to maintain the funding for sea lamprey control at current levels. The board of directors approved of the letter. Members can also contact Senators Levin and Stabenow and their congressman. A "inal item, Gander Mountain is no longer participating in our “pays to belong program.” They may come up with another program in the future that we can use. Meeting adjourned 9:45pm – pea soup fog from Lansing to Waterford. Come on Spring! Lenard Pietila, State Director Metro West

2011CaptainandCrewoftheYearContest—History,Rulesand

Concerns

History:The Captain and Crew of the Year awards were established in 2001. The primary purpose was to encourage

participation in Metro West lake tournaments. The program has accomplished that purpose. Over the years, the rules have changed to award the best sports-person in each category and to improve participation. The winners represent the Club to the public. The standings help identify the experienced anglers in Metro West so that other members can refer to them when they have questions about "ishing the Great Lakes. Identi"ication of the top 20 anglers in each category is a bene"it to the Club.

Rules have been added as concerns were de"ined during the "ishing season. As you can see below, there are very few rules that have been needed to manage the process. When concerns are de"ined then new rules are considered for the following year. Rule changes are voted on by all the members in line with Club bylaws.

Rules:Only Boat Events Count ; Best Six Tournaments Count; Point values for positions and big "ish are agreed & posted

each year; Any member on a non-member boat is the Captain and charter boats not allowed; Captains "ishing on another boat get 1 point regardless of position in the event (This is to encourage captains to bring their boat but gives credit for participation.); In case of a Tie, the seventh best event is included, then 8th, then 9th until the tie is broken; and Tourna-ments must be identi"ied by April1 each year and cannot be moved and count as C of Y event. All Lake Tournaments count if identi"ied as a Tournament by April 1.

The award for the winners is an Embroidered Jacket (total value of $100 or less) for each. The winner can select the jacket from any source. If the winner has won in the past, his or her jacket can be updated with the additional year and the remain-der of the $100 awarded in cash.

Concerns:2011 has been no different than other year; a few concerns have been raised.

Five different Point Systems have been recommended. Consider the history of the C of Y when selecting the appropriate scor-ing approach. I have recommended the "irst three options based on comments made during 2010. Two additional proposals have been put forward.

Should a bonus point be given at each tournament for crews that catch a limit based upon the type of tournament?

Should C of Y participants be rewarded for “Service Rendered” to make the Club a better "ishing organization? The Captain and Crewperson of the year represent Metro West to the members and to the public. The concern indicates that the C of Y should be seen as contributors to the “Good of the Club” as well as the best lake anglers.

PossibleNewRulesforCofYprocess:

◊ Select one of "ive scoring processes for 2011.

◊ Select one of four scoring processes for “Big Fish” during a tournament?

◊ Add additional point for crews that catch the limit at the tournament?

◊ Include Bonus Points for Service to the Club for speci"ic volunteer work?

◊ A vote will be taken by e-mail and paper ballots in March and April and at the April Membership Meeting

ForthegoodoftheClub:Consider the above and be ready to participate in the establishment of new C of Y rules.

This should be a “Fun” contest with as little stress involved as possible. There are always differences of opinion so get in-volved and have ONE. Remember, the purpose is to identify the top boat captain and top crew member(s) for the year AND encourage more participation in Club lake events. All members and their spouse (per the bylaws) are eligible to vote. I will record all votes and have the results (summary and by member) available by April 15th.

I will be available at 6:30 pm before the April 5th General Meeting to answer questions about the process and the ballot. If possible, I would like to consider any new concerns as part of the 2012 C of Y rules change process.

Ballots were emailed. Please take a minute and vote. You can vote at the April General Meeting or call me to record your vote.

See the ballot on the next page.

....here's a few pictures taken while fishing with guide

"Terry Weiler." We fished Sat. on the Muskegon river. We

went 9 for 9. 5 were taken pulling plugs and 4 on spawn

under bobbers. In case anyone is interested in contacting

him or looking at his web...here's the address.

[email protected] He was a nice guy and did a

good job putting

us on fish. He runs a rive sled w/an 80 HP ... comforta-

ble with cabin and heat if necessary.

He will post all pictures on Tues. I am heading to Fla.

tonight for 8 days returning in time for the Farm Outing!

Take care ... Bob Thomas
