SAMSUNG STOLE HEADLINES

WITH LAUNCH OF GALAXY S6 &

AWARD WINNING S6 EDGE

Huawei’s smartphone brand Honor announced a

significant expansion in its mobile device offerings with

two new devices that they hope will compete with rivals

such as HTC and Samsung. The Honor 6+, an upgraded

version of the Honor 6 device, delivers more detailed,

richer images with a unique bionic parallel 8MP

camera. Whilst the mid-range 4X was unveiled as

Honor’s first 4G smartphone.

EXPANDED THEIR RANGE WITH

NEW 6+ AND 4X

The HTC One M9 was unveiled, offering an updated

processor, camera and some updates to its overall

design and finish that attempted to address user

issues with previous versions. The Chief Executive of

HTC stated that this was the most competitive HTC

handset to date with the “ third generation of our

iconic design.”

ANTICIPATED HTC ONE M9

Samsung unveiled its new Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge

claiming that they were the most advanced

smartphones in the world, with capabilities no other

device can match. The Galaxy S6 Edge won the Best

New Handset, Device or Tablet Award at MWC15 seeing

off strong competition from HTC and LG. The S6 Edge

with its ‘three-sided screen’ and more subtle curved

edges is the next generation to the Galaxy Note Edge.

SONY ANNOUNCED NEW MID-TIER XPERIA M4 AQUA

In the absence of a massive flagship launch at MWC, Sony opted for revealing a mid-range product in the Xperia

M4 Aqua. Sony is hoping the premium design will be enough to convince users they’re getting a premium device at a

lower cost with clever screen technology and a similar look to the high end Xperia Z3.

MICROSOFT LAUNCHED LUMIA 640 AND 640XL

The Microsoft Lumia 640 was announced, Microsoft’s latest foray into the midrange market along with the phablet

sized Lumia 640 XL the bigger brother of the Lumia 640. Both phones will be powered by a Snapdragon 400 chipset

and initially launch Windows 8.1 but with intention to bring them and other modern Lumias to Windows 10.

BLACKBERRY UNVEILED TOUCH-SCREEN PHONE LEAP

The Blackberry Leap is not the company’s first all-touch phone but it may come as a surprise as Blackberry said last

March their focus was going to be very ‘keyboard centric’. Blackberry believe Leap will appeal to young professionals

and businesses that value security and privacy. They better hope it does!

NOKIA LAUNCHED THEIR N1 TABLET

Yes, Nokia is seemingly still alive. The Nokia N1 launched last year in China has been hard to come by until MWC

where the Nokia Android tablet was showcased. It has a slender profile, unibody aluminium shell and an eye

catching display, plus it has recently been updated to Android Lollipop. Nokia has provided a stylish Android tablet

with a passing resemblance to the iPad Mini.

HTC ANNOUNED GRIP, ITS FIRST WEARABLE FITNESS TRACKER

HTC announced its first wearable product following partnership with sportswear company Under Armour. HTC

Grip, a GPS-enabled fitness tracker, will record your route, distance, pace and calories. With a matte black finish,

colour interior band and curved display, the Grip looks like a hybrid of Nike’s FueldBand2 and the Microsoft Band.

HTC is hoping for mass appeal with its first big fitness device.

LG OFFERED UP THE FASHIONABLE LG WATCH URBANE

LG showcased its luxury 4G-enabled smartwatch the LG Watch Urbane and LG Watch Urbane LTE which the

business hopes will be worn and viewed by consumers as everyday accessories, rather than electronic gadgets. This

is evident in the design highlighting how smartwatches are evolving to look more like traditional watches.

Huawei showcased wearables ambitions moving into the smartwatch space. Some argue the classiest watch in the

Android Wear family, available in gold, silver and black and includes 6 axis motion sensor and heart rate monitor.

The Huawei watch, running Android Wear, will be landing in June, some months after the Apple Watch.

HUAWEI ALSO REVEALED TALKBAND N1 AND TALKBAND N2

Huawei’s Talkband N1 and Talkband B2 are fitness trackers with a twist. Talkband N1 is a wireless Bluetooth

headset with a built-in accelerometer that syncs with Huawei’s Talkband app so you don’t have to wear a fitness

band. Talkband B2 is a more traditional fitness tracker but with the addition of a Bluetooth headset embedded

within the band that can pop out.

TV remote Peel has announced it will be upgrading its

services to make your home smarter than ever before.

The updated Peel app will cover a wide range of

smart home electronics including lighting, air

conditioning and locks. I t will also work on new

devices the HTC One M9 and Samsung’s Galaxy S6

and S6 Edge. This aims to be replace the traditional

remote by simplifying it with fewer buttons and more

images.

Avegant demonstrated the new prototype of Glyph, a

headset that looks and acts like noise-cancelling

headphones, but when flipped down to cover the eyes

serves as a screen. Users will be able to explore 360

degree videos, something YouTube has said it will

support and see image through this headset just by

moving their head around.

GOOGLE’S PROJECT LOON AMBITIONS HAVE GROWN

Google’s ambition to connect the unconnected, and bring wireless connectivity to even the most remote areas of the

globe, were re-confirmed. Google’s Project Loon balloons, which act as floating cell towers, have been successfully

tested around the world and can now stay afloat for 6 months.

FACEBOOK OFFERED SIMPLER APPROACH TO CONNECTING UNCONNECTED

Zuckerberg gave an update on his Internet.org project to bring Internet access to the world’s billions who lack it

today. He believes it is regular network carrier technology that will help achieve this not sci-fi ideas such as Google’s

Project Loon. He tried to persuade mobile operators that offering free basic internet services would help grow their

businesses faster in emerging markets.

SAMSUNG ROLLED OUT SAMSUNG

PAY AS RIVAL TO APPLE PAY

Google officially unveiled its new mobile payment

platform, Android Pay. While Apple Pay looks like it will

become a successful service for mobile payments, Google

wants Android Pay to become a successful platform.

Google exec Sundar Pichai confirmed, "We are doing it

in a way in which anybody else can build a payments

service on top of Android."

Klarna aims to eliminate the barriers to purchase on

a smartphone or tablet, such as entering a password,

to improve mobile conversions. Klarna seperates

buying and paying on mobile by letting consumers

pay for their goods at a later date, removing friction

from the process. I t essentially takes on that risk on

behalf of merchants.

Samsung jumped into the mobile payment ring with the

launch of its own Samsung Pay. Samsung Pay is

launching on the company’s new Samsung Galaxy S6

and the S6 Edge. I t uses technology from LoopPay,

which the company recently acquired, and that could

give it a bit of an edge.
