Shipbrokers left and right are highlighting the VLCC tanker markets’ intense negative

pressures. In its latest weekly report, shipbroker Charles R. Weber said that “rates in

the VLCC market were under renewed negative pressure this week, paring last

week’s modest gains and extending to a near two‐month low. Though demand in the

Middle East was stronger, rising 85% w/w from last week’s YTD low to 24 fixtures –

boosted by a surge in demand for AG‐China voyages to an eight‐month high – the

pace of demand seemed slower as half of this week’s tally was covered under

COAs”.

The global container shipping segment is unlikely to see more major merger and

acquisition (M&A) deals following the latest takeover of Orient Overseas (Internation-

al) Limited (OOIL) by Cosco Shipping, according to AlixPartners.

With Cosco Shipping needing time to digest this OOIL acquisition in order to achieve

all the synergies, other carriers are unlikely to make acquisition moves, as the bigger

liners have all played their cards earlier, according to Lim Lian Hoon, managing

director, Hong Kong at AlixPartners.

Qatar is eager to retain its position as the world’s key exporter of liquefied natural gas (LNG), especially in light of the ongoing dispute with its neighbors which could result in more economic sanctions against the country.

Hong Kong-based Hutchison Ports has indicated that ports in the Middle East and African region will represent an important part of its growth strategy. The global terminal operator currently has facilities in Pakistan, Oman, Ajman, Saudi Arabia and Tanzania in East Africa, managing 18 container berths and eight general cargo or ro-ro berths, and is committing a significant amount of investment to strengthen this portfolio. The group has also recently confirmed that it is continuing to look for opportunities to expand in the region.

"Upon review of the results of the nine year period (2008-2016) surveyed, the WSC estimates that there were on average 568 containers lost at sea each year, not counting catastrophic events, and on average a total of 1,582 containers lost at sea each year including catastrophic events. On average, 64% of containers lost during the last decade were attributed to a catastrophic event."

The Shanghai Shipping Exchange (SSE) Tuesday officially launched the Belt and Road shipping indices to track freight trade data among countries involved after a two-year trial. The indices include a Belt and Road trade index, a Belt and Road freight volume index, and a Maritime Silk Road freight index. The Belt and Road Initiative – or the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Mar-itime Silk Road – was proposed by Chinese leadership in 2013 to build trade and infra-structure links along ancient overland and maritime Silk Road routes, connecting coun-tries in Asia, Europe, Africa, and Oceania.

Analysis of the Nine Year Trends

In the framework of the importance of Marine Transportation in today’s trade, the chairman and CEOof IRISL, Dr. Mohammad Saeidi, attended in 28th annual session of CMF in Barcelona, 2017 called the Silk Road “A supplementary choice for Marine Transportation”.

World Container Index: Drewry assessment on Thursday, 13 July 2017

Belt and Road shipping indices officially released (chinadaily)

IRISL: Silk Road; A Supplementary Choice for Marine Transportation

Containers Lost At Sea – 2017 Update

•The composite index is down by 2.1% this week and up by 13% from

the same period of 2016.

•The average composite index of the WCI, assessed by Drewry for

year-to-date, is US $1,551/40ft container, which is $120 lower than the

five-year average of $1,671/40ft container. It is also 13% higher than

•Spot rates on the Shanghai-Rotterdam route fell by $71 to $1,865 for

a 40ft box this week. The rate volatility decreased largely as the

weekly decline for the same period in 2016 was $232. Similarly,

overcapacity and a slow start to the peak season dragged down the

Transpacific eastbound rates. The spot rates from Shanghai to New

York lost $20 to reach $2,385 for a 40ft box and the rates from

Shanghai to Los Angeles dropped by $77 to $1,313. Drewry expects

the deferral of GRIs on the Transpacific trade to result in further rate

decline next week while the Asia-Europe market is expected to

remain strong.

72% of cargo ships over 20,000GTready to meet ECDIS deadline

Navis: Data Sharing CreatesEfficient Terminals

Almost three-quarters of cargo ships over 20,000 gross tonnage (GT) are already

compliant with the SOLAS-mandated Electronic Chart Display and Information System

(ECDIS) deadline of 1st July 2017, according to the latest figures published by the

United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO).

The issues caused by a lack of data sharing, digitization, and collaboration between

ports and terminals have been discussed at TOC Europe 2017 with Navis' Guenter

Schmidmeir, General Manager & Vice President EMEA.

Schmidmeir has addressed what needs to happen to overcome problems in how the

industry views sharing its data as many terminal operators see such initiatives as

giving up a competitive advantage.

In the interview, Schmidmeir shares Navis' software strategy for the carrier industry

and the impacts its product development has had on ports and terminals achieving

efficiency through automation.

tainer Terminal (LBCT), the first fully-automated container terminal in the US.
