We are delighted to once again be working with Voyages to Antiquity and their vessel, the charming MV Aegean Odyssey. We have worked with Voyages to Antiquity since the launch of the 350-passenger MV Aegean Odyssey in 2010 and their

ethos, like ours, is to combine the very best in cultural travel, fascinating destinations and first class lecturers. As cruise vessels grow ever larger and the itineraries become seemingly irrelevant, it is refreshing that there are still companies such as Voyages to Antiquity who possess a similar outlook to our own.

Value for MoneyIn addition to devising fascinating itineraries, like us, Voyages to Antiquity also believe that good food and wine, friendly service, comfortable cabins and a relaxed atmosphere onboard are integral parts of a successful cruise and to that end, wine with dinner, shore excursions and all gratuities are included in the price.

MV Aegean OdysseyMV Aegean Odyssey is a premium class vessel and provides the best features of a mid-size ship such as spacious public areas, a choice of restaurants and stability in inclement weather along with the personal service and intimate surroundings of a small ship. As with all vessels which we use, MV Aegean Odyssey’s size allows her to visit ports which larger vessels

are unable to access and navigate around the scenic islands of the Adriatic, Aegean and Mediterranean.

Travel with ExpertsAccompanying you on each cruise will be celebrated guest speakers who have been carefully selected for their knowledge of the areas you are visiting and their ability to bring the history of these remarkable civilisations and cultures to life. Lecturers include historians, professors, archaeologists and more, all well regarded in their respective fields. Lectures generally take place in the comfort of the Ambassador Lounge, often after dinner in preparation for the next day’s port of call or during a day at sea.

Fascinating ItinerariesWithin the pages of this brochure you will find seven fascinating itineraries exploring the best the Mediterarnan has to offer from a cruise following in the footsteps of St Paul through Greece and Turkey to a Grand Tour from Venice to Nice or an exploration of the delightful French Riviera and Moorish Spain.

mV aEGEan odySSEythe MV Aegean Odyssey is a premium

class ship that was rebuilt to cater for cruising in the coastal waters of the

central and southern Mediterranean. Originally a mid-size vessel carrying up to 570 passengers, the new configuration includes generously-sized suites, junior suites, staterooms and cabins with and without balconies, which means she now accommodates an average of 350 guests. The vessel provides the best features of a mid-size ship such as passenger space, a choice of restaurants and stability in inclement weather. She also has the personal service and intimate surroundings of a small ship.

Your Suite/Stateroom/Cabin All suites, staterooms and cabins are en suite and feature a bath and/or shower, flat screen TV, safe, hair dryer and are fully air-conditioned. Guests in Balcony Class (categories A to D) will also enjoy: a stateroom or suite with balcony, a welcome bottle of Champagne, a fridge stocked with soft drinks, complimentary bottled water, robe and slippers and Molton Brown bathroom amenities. The sizes, layout and bed configuration will vary within a category. Beds may be fixed double (queen size), fixed separate twin beds or twin beds that can be converted into a double bed. All outside staterooms and cabins have windows except Category J most of which have portholes.

Your Space On board you will find two restaurants; the Marco Polo Restaurant on the Marco Polo Deck and the Terrace Café on the Promenade Deck which has a beautiful outdoor seating area so passengers can enjoy dining al fresco in warm weather. There are four bars on board and

three lounges so there will always be space for relaxation and quiet when desired, as well as ample room for socialising with new found friends. There is also a lecture theatre, a library, shop and internet centre. The on-board library features an extensive range of volumes covering classical history, literature, art, architecture and philosophy. To attend to the body as well as the mind, you can relax on the sweeping sun decks and cool off in the outdoor pool. There is also a fully-equipped gym with lockers and showers, sauna, massage and beauty treatment rooms and early morning yoga. The hairdressers and beauty centre are located on the Belvedere Deck adjacent to the reception area.

DiningThe MV Aegean Odyssey offers numerous dining spaces and a varied, sumptuous cuisine. As well as being one of the world’s most historically interesting and naturally beautiful destinations, the Mediterranean is home to an unsurpassed culinary tradition. The gastronomic culture of using the very best fresh local ingredients cooked in a simple but delicious and healthy style is the inspiration for the restaurants aboard the MV Aegean Odyssey.

The most elegant of the ship’s restaurants, the Marco Polo has a casual country-club ambience and Mediterranean inspired food. At lunch, you can choose from a variety of starters, three dishes of the day and a choice of desserts, fruit and cheese. In the evening, dinner will include appetisers, soup, salads, a choice of three or four main courses and desserts. The complimentary house wines are carefully sourced from Italy, Spain, France and Greece. There is also a full wine list of alternative vintages available.

With a combination of indoor and outdoor seating, sophisticated interior design and cooking on the open grill, the Terrace Café replicates the charm and ambience of a trattoria. As well as the grill, there is a large buffet. The day starts in the Terrace Café with breakfast where you can enjoy a healthy combination of yogurt, fruit and muesli or indulge in eggs, bacon or an omelette. Every afternoon you will find a selection of freshly-prepared sandwiches, cakes and scones served in the Terrace Café or the Charleston Lounge.

In the evenings, Tapas on the Terrace recreates the informal yet sophisticated atmosphere of a European bistro. Equal care has been given to the selection of included wines served at Tapas on the Terrace; these will be served at your table by our helpful waiting staff. For those passengers enjoying a late night discussing the excitement of the day’s sightseeing, a selection of light snacks freshly prepared by the onboard chefs will be available in the Charleston Lounge.

about 1625BC. A visit tells the tale of an affluent society who farmed, built two-story homes and indulged a taste for frescoes, furniture and jewellery. Today’s tour includes a visit to the ongoing excavations, where you can walk amid the well-preserved streets, view the workshops and squares. We will also visit several of Santorini’s picturesque villages, stroll along the cobblestone streets where wealthy sea captains built their mansion and take in breathtaking views in all directions.

Day 6 Heraklion, Crete. Even without the tales of a bloodthirsty Minotaur, the magnificent palace complex at Knossos, with its flamboyant decoration, courts, audience chambers and residential areas, is an impressive and inspiring site. Your guided tour will take you through this legend-rich, entrancing complex that sprawls across five acres, where everything from throne room to royal living quarters is reconstructed with meticulous care.

Day 7 Rhodes. Leave behind the port where the Colossus once stood and discover a stunning ensemble of Gothic architecture just a short drive from the port. These World Heritage monuments testify to the role of Rhodes, the largest island in the Dodecanese group, as a strategic crossroads and many structures date to the era of the Knights of St John of Jerusalem. During your free time there will be an opportunity to visit the Acropolis at Lindos.

Day 8 Delos and Mykonos. Visit the tiny, deserted isle of Delos, the religious centre of the Cyclades, where columns lie glistening in the sun, and the Lions of Delos guard the Sacred Way. As the reputed birthplace of the god Apollo, Delos was once a principal religious and

For natural beauty and outstanding archaeological sites, there are few journeys in the world that can compare with

this cruise to Greece, its islands and the coast of Turkey. After a three-night stay in Athens, you will board the MV Aegean Odyssey for a cruise visiting some of the most inspiring monuments of the ancient world including Ephesus and Pergamon, amazingly preserved Graeco-Roman sites in the Mediterranean. During our time in the Greek islands, you will see the Bronze Age artefacts at Akrotiri on Santorini, explore the well-preserved Minoan treasures of Crete, visit the crusader stronghold on Rhodes as well as sacred Delos, the birthplace of Achilles. Finally, as a fitting end to this wonderful cruise, enjoy a two-night stay in the remarkable city of Istanbul onboard the MV Aegean Odyssey, before cruising past Mount Athos on your return to Athens.

Professor Robin CormackRobin Cormack is an art historian who works on Mediterranean art, particularly from Antiquity and Byzantium, but also from the Renaissance. He teaches in the Classics Faculty, University of Cambridge, and is giving lectures in 2014 in the National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C. and at the Universities of California at Los Angeles

and Santa Barbara. Robin has published books on Byzantine Art, and co-curated the recent Royal Academy exhibition, Byzantium 330-1453. He has a special side-interest in British architects who worked in Khartoum and New Delhi, and since he has always made it an aim never to write or lecture about monuments and sites unless he has visited them and studied them at first hand, travel is one of the things he does most often. Fortunately his wife, Professor Mary Beard, agrees with this aim, and travels too (and not just on twitter). So do his children who are both students working in Africa, and who spend time in Cairo and South Sudan. He is currently trying to learn to play the harpsichord, but that does not travel with him.

Day 1 London to Athens, Greece. Fly by scheduled flight. On arrival transfer to your hotel for a three-night stay.

Day 2 Athens. Today enjoy a choice of included sightseeing tours in Athens. Either visit the sublime expression of Classical Greece, the Acropolis, with its sweeping views of Athens, and then explore another marvel: the long-anticipated $200-million, 226,000-square-foot Acropolis Museum. Alternatively, discover the splendour of Byzantine Athens in a tour that combines visits to both the Byzantine Museum, home to the world’s largest collection of icons, and also the Monastery of Kaisariani with its fine frescoes and elegant gardens.

Day 3 Athens. A free day for you to explore this magnificent city. You may chose to roam the galleries of the endlessly fascinating National Archaeological Museum or simply wander the streets of the ancient Plaka district with its labyrinthine alleys full of shops and tavernas.

Day 4 Corinth and Epidaurus. Today enjoy a sightseeing tour to Corinth and Epidaurus. Ancient Corinth was one of the largest and most important cities of Greece, with a population of 90,000 in 400 BC. Later the Romans built a new city in its place and made it the provincial capital of Greece in 44 BC, when the city’s population was between 50,000 to 700,000 according to different sources. Visit the wonderful ruins including the Roman Fountain and the Temple of Apollo. Epidaurus was sacred to Asclepios, the god of medicine, and is the site of the best preserved of all ancient Greek theatres. Embark the MV Aegean Odyssey for an evening sailing.

Day 5 Santorini, Greek Islands. Closed to the public for over six years, the newly reopened Minoan settlement of Akrotiri is the highlight of today’s tour. One of the Aegean’s most important archaeological sites, Akrotiri was abandoned after severe earthquakes, then covered in pumice by a volcanic eruption in

commercial centre of the Eastern Mediterranean. Pilgrims, traders, politicians, and warriors alike from all over the Mediterranean came to this sanctuary. Nearby Mykonos with its cafes and shops is the perfect contrast.

Days 9 & 10 Izmir, Turkey. Our first day of sightseeing whilst moored in Izmir takes you to the rightly world famous ruins of Ephesus, an ancient city that was, in its heyday, on a par with Athens and Rome. Once home to over 250,000 people, this site affords ancient snapshots of daily lives of the Greeks and their conquerors, the Romans. The seaside port that fuelled the city’s prosperity in antiquity has silted up, leaving the grand sites frozen in time in a state of remarkable preservation. Over the centuries, Ephesus was a sacred centre to Artemis, a Roman stronghold, and later, a centre of Christianity. There is evidence that St Paul, St John and the Virgin Mary were in this city. Highlights of your walking tour include the Library of Celsus with its splendid columned façade, the Grand Theatre where St Paul once preached his sermons, the terraced houses and the Temple of

Hadrian. Few places bring antiquity so vividly to life. We will return to the MV Aegean Odyssey for an overnight mooring. On our second day we will visit Pergamon and ride a cable car to this spectacular hill-top capital. Pergamon rose to power as a Greek kingdom in the 2nd and 1st centuries BC, but was earlier ruled by Lydians and Persians before falling to Alexander the Great in 334BC. One look at the unassailable site reveals how the city got its name: from the Greek word for citadel.

Day 11 Canakkale, Turkey. Today there will be a choice of tours, you could visit the moving memorials and battlefields of Gallipoli on the Gelibolu Peninsula. In World War I, over 500,000 Allied and Turkish troops died in the eight-month campaign as British commanders sought unsuccessfully to make a strategic rush through the Dardanelles to capture Istanbul and open the Black Sea for the Allied Army. Alternatively, travel further back in time and enter the world of Helen of Troy and Paris, Hektor and Achilles. The site of Troy is one of the most significant demonstrations of early contact between the civilisations of Anatolia and the Mediterranean world.

Days 12 & 13 Istanbul, Turkey. One of the major highlights of our cruise is sailing along the Bosphorus and docking in the heart of the Byzantine masterpiece that is Istanbul. On today’s sightseeing tour visit Hagia Sophia, the 6th-century cathedral that is this city’s most important Byzantine monument, then wander the grounds of the lavish Topkapi

Palace, once seat of the Ottoman Empire. Return to the ship for an overnight mooring and the next day enjoy a sightseeing tour that will include the Blue Mosque with its extraordinary tile interior and the iconic Grand Bazaar.

Day 14 Skiathos, Greek Islands. Relax this morning as you cruise

past Mount Athos and admire the astonishing monasteries and, in the afternoon, enjoy some time on the “Mamma Mia” island Skiathos.

Day 15 Piraeus, Greece to London. Disembark this morning and transfer to Athens Airport for your scheduled flight to London.

Price Includes: Economy class scheduled flights, three nights hotel accommodation in Athens with breakfast daily, 11 nights aboard the MV Aegean Odyssey, all meals onboard, selected wines with dinner onboard, shore excursions as detailed, in-depth lecture programme, onboard gratuities, overseas transfers and baggage handling, port taxes and airport taxes. Not Included: Travel insurance, gratuities ashore, optional excursions. Few cities evoke the Classical Age with greater resonance than Athens, making this the perfect starting point for a

voyage around the historical wonders of the Aegean. Before embarking the MV Aegean Odyssey, explore the ancient treasures of this remarkable city, site of St Paul’s famous sermon at the Areopagus, and tour Athens’ classical heritage during our three-night hotel stay in the city.

St Paul embarked on three missionary journeys in his lifetime. This voyage will take you to several of the places the Apostle visited and preached along the way including Corinth and the ancient city of Ephesus. It was in ancient Corinth, that St Paul preached and lived for two years and founded a church in 50AD. Visit the ruins of the ancient city where Paul worked and explore the 1st-century ruins of the agora where Paul’s trial by Gallio took place. In Ephesus, you will walk through one of the most magnificent ancient sites in the world and see the Fountain of Trajan, the Library of Celsus and, of course, the 24,000-capacity Great Theatre where St Paul preached.

This voyage also includes additional places of great spiritual significance including the beautiful island of Patmos where St John wrote the Book of Revelation, the island of Delos - most sacred of places to the ancient Greeks, and Philippi where Paul delivered his first sermon in Europe, sowing the seeds of Christianity, and where he baptised Lydia, the first Christian convert in Europe.

Dr David Price-Williams, University of LondonDavid Price-Williams has a first degree from the University of Wales in Ancient Near Eastern languages (Aramaic, Hebrew, Arabic etc.), with a subsidiary in Attic and Koine Greek. David has been associated with the eastern Mediterranean – Greece, Turkey, Jordan and the Near East for more than 40 years. He is deeply involved

with all aspects of Near Eastern culture, history and archaeology. His post-graduate work and his doctorate, from the University of London, is in Near Eastern archaeology. David has designed and lectured on many tours to Greece, Turkey and the Near East and is very familiar with the archaeological sites in the area.

The Very Reverend Victor StockVictor Stock is a retired Anglican priest, who was the Dean of Guildford in the Church of England. Apart from his being an Associate of King’s College, he is also a member of the Order of Australia (OAM), Doctor of the University of Surrey, and Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA). Retirement has meant Victor has more

time to teach and preach and also hugely enjoys being a Governor in both state and private Schools and sitting on the Fabric Committee of Salisbury Cathedral as well as being a Priest Vicar at Westminster Abbey. Victor’s interests include travel, politics and gardening. He is a fascinating and highly entertaining raconteur and his reflections embrace social, political and humanitarian issues of global importance, as well as frequently hilarious anecdotes. His diary from 20 years has turned into the entertaining book ‘Taking Stock: Confessions of a City Priest’.

Hellenistic ruins of Pergamon. Founded by the Greeks in the 8th century BC, Pergamon once rivalled Athens and Alexandria as a centre of culture and learning. Here you will see the remains of the Altar of Zeus, the Temples of Dionysus and Trajan and the impressive Greek theatre. In the afternoon, you are free to relax in the picturesque fishing port of Dikili.

Day 9 Canakkale/Troy Or Gallipoli. Canakkale is on the shore of the Dardanelles (the ancient Hellespont). From here you have a choice of destinations for a morning tour. The 13th or 12th century BC siege of Troy by Spartan and Achaean warriors from Greece has fired the imagination of poets over thousands of years. city of Kavala, ancient Neapolis, where Paul accompanied by Silas, Luke and Timothy, first set foot in Europe. Then visit Philippi where Paul delivered his first sermon in Europe, sowing the seeds of Christianity. Here Paul baptised a certain woman named Lydia, the first Christian convert in Europe. The Roman Forum, completely excavated, is from after Paul’s time. Among the ruins, located on the rocky ledge above the town’s main road is the prison where Paul and Silas were thrown. Return to Kavala and sail this evening.

Day 12 Thessalonica/Veria and Vergina. Paul preached in Thessalonica during the winters of 49-50 AD and wrote two epistles to the ancient Thessalonians. You will visit the ramparts of the city, and explore the city’s Byzantine heritage, including the 5th century basilica Agios Dimitrios, and the Rotonda that was built as a mausoleum for Emperor Galerius in the 4th century. In the afternoon, travel to Veria and Vergina. Even by the standards of Greece, Veria is an old city; first mentioned in the writings of Thucydides in 432BC, there is evidence that it was populated as early as 1000BC. Paul famously preached in the city, and its inhabitants were among the first Christians in the Empire. Nearby Vergina is the site of the burial place of Philip II, father of Alexander the Great.

Day 13 Volos/Meteora. After arriving in the morning at the port of Volos, we will travel by road to see the famous Byzantine monasteries built on the sandstone towers at Meteora. In all there

and could accommodate 9,000 people. Today it is a vibrant warren of museums, galleries, shops and restaurants mingled with Medieval fortifications, pre-Romanesque churches and Gothic chapels. Day 6 Dubrovnik, Croatia & Kotor Bay, Montenegro. Lord Byron called the majestic walled city of Dubrovnik “the pearl of the Adriatic,” and it is easy to see why. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is held to be the best-preserved walled city in the Mediterranean with a seafront setting and dramatic mountain backdrop. The city skyline is a medley of bell towers, copper domes and massive 10th-century walls. This morning’s walking tour of the Old Town takes you along the city’s main street, the Stradun or Placa, once a sea channel connecting two ancient settlements and past such landmarks as the Sponza Palace with its elaborate stone exterior, the Baroque Church of St Blaise and Kotor Bay.

Day 7 Corfu, Greek Islands. You can thank Venice for the thickly wooded headland of Corfu. During the Republic’s four centuries of rule on this Ionian island, it was decreed that an olive tree be planted at each birth and a cypress at each death. Today’s sightseeing starts with a drive to Corfu Town and a visit to the Old Fortress rising majestically from a large cliff and surrounded by a fairytale moat. Enjoy a stroll along the Venetian-built Esplanade past the colonnade of the Liston Cafe, built during French rule. From here there is an excellent view of the town’s cricket pitch, a legacy from British rule, and the start of the walking tour.

Day 8 At sea. Relax onboard as we cross to Sicily and perhaps attend a lecture or two.

This meticulously planned itinerary echoes the idea of the “Grand Tour”, a practice popular in the seventeenth

and eighteenth centuries that introduced Europeans and Americans to the art and culture of ancient Greece, France and Italy. Then, as now, Rome and Venice were not to be missed, and Florence and the ruins of Pompeii were also popular destinations. As well as the “Grand Tour” favourites, this cruise takes you to the Renaissance treasures of Urbino, the spectacular coast of Dalmatia, Corfu and the elegant Greek theatre at Taormina in Sicily. Starting with a two-night hotel stay in Venice, this voyage concludes with a cruise along the French Riviera to the glamorous resorts of Nice and Monte Carlo - a fitting end to this modern-day Grand Tour.

Day 1 London to Venice, Italy. Fly to Venice by scheduled flight and on arrival transfer to your hotel for a two-night stay.

Day 2 Venice. This morning there will be a guided city tour of Venice followed by an afternoon at leisure for you to relax or explore independently. This evening Voyages to Antiquity have exclusively reserved St Mark’s Cathedral for a private tour during which the famous mosaics are illuminated in a spectacular light show.

Day 3 Venice. Enjoy a morning at leisure or join the optional tour to the aristocratic villas along the Brenta River. Transfer to the MV Aegean Odyssey this afternoon and embark.

Day 4 Urbino. Situated on a hilltop, Urbino is a small town with a big history which had a huge influence on Renaissance culture and Urbino’s Ducal Palace is one of the finest buildings of the period. It was also the birthplace of the artist Raphael and today’s tour will include a visit to the house where he lived up to age of fourteen. We continue to Palazzo Ducale, Italy’s most beautiful Renaissance palace built for Duke Federico da Montefeltro and the Duomo. After visiting the cathedral there is some free time for lunch on your own in one of Urbino’s many restaurants.

Day 5 Split, Croatia. When Emperor Diocletian shook up the Roman Empire by abdicating in 305AD, he had his retirement residence ready: a lavish palace he had just built in Salona, now Split, in his native Dalmatia. Today’s guided tour will include this amazing palace complex that, when completed, held three temples, a massive mausoleum,

Day 9 Taormina, Sicily. Nowhere is the beauty of Sicily more apparent than in the hilltop town of Taormina. This morning, we will tender ashore for a short, scenic drive to this idyllic spot with its mountainous backdrop, lemon-blossom scented air and narrow, Medieval “streets”. The highlight is a guided tour of the theatre. Originally built by the Greeks in the 3rd-century BC and rebuilt by the Romans in the 2nd-century AD, the site offers heart-skipping views of the sea and Mount Etna.

Day 10 Sorrento, Italy. Today there’s a choice of included excursions to either Pompeii or Herculaneum. The patricians who built their mansions in Pompeii came to escape the turmoil in Rome, but a different sort of violence awaited them in their southern retreats. In 79AD, Mount Vesuvius erupted at 10am and, within three hours, extinguished these affluent communities even as it preserved their remains for our discovery. On the walking tour, you will be guided expertly through this spectacular site. Places not to be missed include the aristocratic mansions, temples, theatres, markets and large forum. Alternatively, drive to Herculaneum which was engulfed by volcanic mud in the same eruption that claimed Pompeii. Fortunately for us, this mud sealed and protected entire buildings: today inlaid marble floors, paintings, mosaics and carbonized woods can all be seen.

Day 11 Rome. Immerse yourself in the sights of Rome on a full-day guided tour highlighted by visits inside the Colosseum and St Peter’s Basilica, as well as a walking tour of Rome’s ancient, Medieval and Baroque delights.

Starting at the Trevi Fountain, head to Colonna Square, Palazzo Montecitorio and the Pantheon, said to have the widest dome in the world. Alternatively, you may choose to visit Ostia Antica. Buried for centuries, this well-preserved archaeological site is far less visited than Pompeii, yet in many ways provides a more complete picture of daily life in the Roman Empire. Your tour begins at Via delle Tombe, leading to the city gates. Stroll along the Decumanus Maximus, the main road and visit the Baths of Neptune. Round off your visit with a stop at the Museum Ostiense to view some wonderful sculptures and mosaics.

Day 12 Florence. Discover the town that gave birth to the Italian Renaissance and view the period’s outpouring of art in the renowned Uffizi Museum. A highlight of the morning is a visit to the Accademia, Europe’s first school of drawing, where Michelangelo’s colossal statue of David presides over a rich collection of paintings and sculptures. Enjoy a guided walking tour past such land-marks as the 10th-century Ponte Vecchio and the Duomo cathedral flanked by Giotto’s Bell Tower. The centerpiece of this tour is an afternoon visit to the world-renowned Uffizi Museum.

Day 13 Marseilles, France. Relax onboard as you cruise the French Riviera for an arrival into Marseilles in the evening.

Day 14 Avignon. Explore the Provençal countryside and two ancient towns during today’s full-day tour that visits Avignon with its papal legacies and Arles, once a crossroads of the Roman Empire. The highlight of the visit to Avignon is a guided tour of the

Pope’s Palace with its long, echoing Great Audience Hall, 14th-century wall paintings and Great Chapel. Or enjoy a trip to Marseilles and Aix en Provence with its wide avenues and medieval ramparts. Your tour begins in Marseilles with its old port first settled by the Greeks in 600BC: now classically French cafes and restaurants nestle amongst gently bobbing fishing boats in the harbour.

Day 15 Nice. Arriving in the French Riviera resort of Nice, you can

spend the day relaxing on the beach, shopping in the boutiques, or join an included excursion to Monte Carlo in the Principality of Monaco. Alternatively, you can head for the charming Provençal hill town of St Paul-de-Vence.

Day 16 Nice to London. Disembark after breakfast and transfer to the airport for the return scheduled flight to London.

View the mighty gate with its chains, portcullis and intricate access system. Stroll the lists between the double walls and savour the atmosphere as you learn about military architecture.

Day 6 Barcelona, Spain. Descend to a unique underground museum for a glimpse of everyday life in Barcino, as Roman Barcelona was called. Hidden under the Medieval buildings and squares of Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter is a town of far greater antiquity. Roman troops arrived here during the Punic Wars (264 to 146BC) and remained for over 600 years, putting their imprint on the language, law and culture. Visit one of Europe’s largest underground archaeological sites at the Barcelona City History Museum. Day 9 Malaga for Granada. Leave the port of Malaga and drive through the wonderful landscape of Andalusia passing endless fields of olive trees and picturesque villages. Your journey takes you to one of the most magical places in the world and the most outstanding symbol of Moorish heritage in Spain, the Alhambra. From the beginning of the 13th century, the original fortress grew into a huge walled site that was clearly intended to be both a palace and a court. Within this gradual change, different stages of development, grandeur and decadence can clearly be seen through the various works of art and buildings erected over the years. The Alhambra was not a single construction, but rather the result of an evolution of successive reforms and extensions. Continuing on the tour we will visit the “Generalife Palace” which was built as the summer paradise for the Sultans of Granada. Its lovely terraces, grottoes, flowerbeds and fabulous fountains will make you feel the glamour of the Moorish inhabitants. After taking in all of these wonderful sites we will enjoy a traditional lunch at a local restaurant. Finally, and to round the day off, you will enjoy a panoramic tour around the city of Granada before returning to Malaga and the MV Aegean Odyssey.

Day 10 Tangier, Morocco. Situated only a short distance across the Strait of Gibraltar from the shores of Europe, Tangier is a gateway to a vastly different culture. Travelling along the promenade, you will arrive at Cape Spartel Lighthouse; more than a century old it shines a warning beacon to ships sailing between the Atlantic and Mediterranean. Arriving back in Tangier, visit the old town

where your guide will walk you through the Medina and visit the Kasbah Museum, allowing you the opportunity to view the fruit and vegetable market and Mendoubia Park where you can explore at leisure, if you wish.

Day 11 Cadiz, Spain. Cadiz has long been considered a bridge between Europe and Africa and was the gateway to the Americas during the age of discovery. You will appreciate its atmosphere and history during a drive through the city from the delightful ancient seaport, passing the 18th century baroque cathedral, Plaza Espana and the gardens where the famous monument of Las Cortes (Spanish Parliament) of 1812 is situated. The cathedral with its famous towering golden domes acts as a landmark against the Cadiz skyline, and the famous composer Manuel de Falla is buried here. We continue inland to the historic town of Jerez de la Frontera which is home to dozens of sherry companies, and a visit will be made to the well-known Bodega Gonzalez Byass, which produces some of the most delicious sherry in the world. Later, cruise along the Guadalquivir River for an evening arrival in Seville where we will moor overnight in the heart of the city.

Day 12 Seville. Seville is a beautiful and romantic place. Legend has it this Andalucian city was founded 3,000 years ago by Hercules and it is also said to be the birthplace of flamenco. Your tour will, we trust, give you a flavour of this intoxicating place. Your starting place is a spectacular one; admire the exterior of the 15-century cathedral of Seville; it is the third largest in Europe and

one of the last built in the Gothic style. It has been said that if heaven does exist than it probably looks like Seville’s Royal Palace Alcazar, a functioning royal palace and some of the Upper Royal Quarters are still used by the Spanish royal family. Finally, stroll through the Old Jewish Quarter of Santa Cruz with its labyrinth of narrow streets and lovely Moorish courtyards. Afterwards, transfer to your hotel to check in for your two-night included stay.

Day 13 Seville for Cordoba. In its history, Cordoba has been both a capital of a Roman province and capital of the Arab state of Al-Andalus. A great cultural reference point in Europe, this ancient city has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and contains a mixture of wonderful buildings, monuments and artefacts that are a reminder of the cultures that have settled it throughout history. You will visit the most famous and inspiring monuments of the city, including the Roman Bridge and the famous Great Mosque, a building that was considered a wonder of the medieval world by both Muslims and Christians. You will also have the opportunity to visit the ancient market, now transformed to an artisan market and walk through the well-known “Calle de las Flores” or “street of flowers”, a beautiful example of a typical Andalucian street decorated with plants and flowers. Before heading to lunch, you will have some time at leisure to explore the city independently.

It stands on the site of the great 12th-century Almohad mosque, with the mosque’s minaret (the Giralda) still towering beside it. It has been said that if heaven does exist then it probably looks like Seville’s Royal Palace Alcazar. A building existed on this site as early as 913 but the main construction was carried out in the early fourteenth century with the sublime Mudejar Palacio de Don Pedro being completed in 1366. Day 5 Lisbon, Portugal. Arrive in the early morning. There has been a settlement on the site of Lisbon since Neolithic times and the city has played a central role in European history since Roman times. Day 12 Falmouth, England. Early morning arrival at Falmouth. With its lush green countryside, towering hedgerows, splendid gardens and famous cream teas, the West Country of England is a charming and gentle place. The dramatic coastline of Devon and Cornwall is also steeped in history from the founding of the Royal Navy to the D-Day landings. From the Cornish port of Falmouth you will drive through the peaceful countryside of small villages, granite farmhouses and hedged fields to the world famous Eden Project. Built in 2001, Eden is the world’s largest global garden housed under an enormous glass dome and containing flora from around the globe.

Day 13 Dartmouth. Along the coast from Falmouth is the Devonian fishing port of Dartmouth, which is home to Britannia Royal Naval College. Dartmouth was of strategic importance as a deep-water port for sailing vessels. The port was used as the sailing point for the Crusades of 1147 and 1190, and Dartmouth was a home of the Royal Navy since the reign of Edward III. The port was twice surprised and sacked during the Hundred Years’ War, after which the mouth of the estuary was closed every night with a great chain. The narrow mouth of the Dart is protected by two fortified castles, Kingswear Castle and Dartmouth Castle, which has been described as one of the most beautifully located fortresses in England. You will also visit Slapton Sands, site of a tragic training incident during the build up to the D-Day landings.

Day 14 Honfleur, France. On the 6th June 1944, the largest invasion force ever mustered landed on the coast of Normandy where we will arrive at breakfast time. Our visit offers the memorable opportunity to be expertly guided through the events of that day on the landing beaches. Later you can choose to visit the excellent Memorial de Caen Museum where the exhibits include the Battle of Normandy film shown in a three screen auditorium or travel to the beautiful

town of Bayeux with its William the Conqueror Centre, home to the world famous tapestry telling the story of the Battle of Hastings.

Day 15 Dover/London. Back across the Channel to Dover, where you will be greeted by the White Cliffs. Disembark this morning for an excursion to Chartwell, Sir Winston Churchill’s country house where he relaxed, painted and famously built his brick wall. Continue to London where your journey ends.

the Chateau de Saumur served as a Royal domain under Phillip II in the thirteenth century and as a prison under Napoleon Bonaparte. Then travel on to Amboise which is famous for the Clos Luce manor house where Leonardo da Vinci lived (and ultimately died) at the invitation of King Francis I of France, whose Chateau d’Amboise dominates the town.

Day 6 Chateaux Country. After visiting the Chateau d’Amboise, head for the charming town of Tours with its magnificent 15th century cathedral. Then spend the afternoon at the Chateau of Azay-le-Rideau that was built between 1515 and 1527 and is one of the earliest French Renaissance chateaux. The Chateau of Azay-le-Rideau was constructed on an island in the Indre River and its foundations rise straight out of the water. Return to the ship for an evening departure to La Rochelle.

Day 7 La Rochelle. Arrive in the morning and leave La Rochelle by road for the Cognac region. Cognac, home of the world famous brandy, is a pretty little town located on the banks of the Charente River. It is also home to a 13th-century château where French King François 1st was born and that houses the Otard. Today, Otard remains one of the world’s famous houses of Cognac brandy and during your visit you will discover the secrets of the swan’s neck-shaped alembic still in use to distill cognac brandy. After learning about the oak-cask ageing process and the art of blending, your visit will conclude with a tasting. After your visit, enjoy a traditional French lunch at a restaurant in Cognac and return to La Rochelle for a panoramic visit of the city and its old harbour.

Beginning in Dover, this Western Europe journey takes you across the Channel to the impressive sites of the D-Day

beaches in Normandy, the unique fortified abbey of Mont Saint-Michel and the elegant chateaux of the Loire. There is also the opportunity to learn about the art of winemaking and taste some of the great vintages of Bordeaux. We continue to the pilgrimage site of Santiago de Compostela in the Spanish province of Galicia, and then head to Portugal for a fitting ending to a delightful journey. In Oporto, visit Porto Cathedral or one of the nearby wine estates, while a two-night hotel stay in Lisbon provides the opportunity to enjoy this captivating city and the idyllic scenery just outside it.

Day 2 Honfleur, France. Cross the English Channel overnight and arrive at Honfleur at breakfast time. On the 6th June 1944, the largest invasion force ever mustered landed on the coast of Normandy. This visit offers the memorable opportunity to be expertly guided through the events of that day on the landing beaches. You can choose to either visit the excellent Memorial de Caen Museum where the exhibits include the Battle of Normandy film shown in a three screen auditorium or travel to the beautiful town of Bayeux with its William the Conqueror Centre, home to the world famous tapestry telling the story of the Battle of Hastings.

Day 3 St Malo. A relaxing morning at sea before arriving at lunchtime for an afternoon at Mont Saint-Michel. With its sharp spires, rocky cliffs rising from the sea and impressive fortifications, Mont Saint-Michel is one of the iconic images of France. At low tide, the surrounding waters recede leaving the islet protruding from the sandy beeches (indeed the Mont is only completely surrounded by the sea every month or two, when the tides are at their highest). Visiting the 11th century abbey and its narrow streets transports the visitor to the Middle Ages.

Day 4 At Sea. Relax as the ship makes its way to Nantes.

Day 5 Nantes/Loire Chateaux. Arrive in the early morning and after breakfast depart Nantes by road for a two-day tour of the Chateaux region of the Loire. Once the favoured region of the French royal family, this region boasts Medieval fortresses, elaborate chateaux, Renaissance residences and impressive cathedrals. The Loire also produces some of the world’s greatest wines including sancerre and Muscadet. After checking in at your hotel for our overnight stay, spend the afternoon at the Chateau de Saumur. Day 8 Bordeaux. This morning the MV Aegean Odyssey sails up the River Gironde to berth in the heart of Bordeaux. The Bordeaux region of France, centred on the city of Bordeaux and covering the whole area of the Gironde department, with a total vineyard area of over 120,000 hectares, makes it the largest wine growing area in France. Average vintages produce over 700 million bottles of Bordeaux wine, ranging from large quantities of everyday table wine, to some of the most expensive and prestigious wines in the world. Today, venture out of the city to one of the prestigious wine estates for a tour of the cellars and a tasting. We will moor overnight in Bordeaux.

Day 9 Bordeaux. The magnificent 18th century architecture of the city has led many people to describe Bordeaux as having the most beautiful streets in France. You will visit the highlights of the city including the Palais Rohan and the 13th-century Cathedral of St Andrew where Eleanor of Aquitane was married to Louis VII. The ship departs after lunch and you can enjoy the journey down the River Gironde en route for La Coruna, Spain.

Day 10 At Sea. Time to reflect on the journey so far and enjoy the on-board facilities and lectures as the ship cruises towards Spain.

Day 11 La Coruna/Santiago de Compostela, Spain. Arrive in the early morning and after breakfast, travel by road to Santiago de Compostela. It is believed by the faithful that Santiago Apostol (St James the Apostle) preached in Galicia and that, after his death

in the Holy Land, his remains were brought back here. A church was built over his remains in the 11th century and ever since this has been a place of pilgrimage. The cathedral here is the final destination for thousands of Christian pilgrims who walk the “Way of St James” and your tour of this magnificent building includes the crypt where St James is believed to be buried. We will also visit the cathedral’s museum and the medieval town.

Day 12 Oporto, Portugal. Leisurely morning at sea before lunchtime arrival and a choice of afternoon tours. Alternatively, head out of the city to visit a famous port wine cellar for a tour and tasting. You will learn all about the production, harvesting and transporting of this unique drink. Of course the tour ends with a tasting and the chance to purchase some bottles if you wish.

Day 13 Lisbon, Portugal. Arrive in the morning and disembark the MV Aegean Odyssey. Transfer to your hotel for a two night stay. There has been a settlement on the site of Lisbon since Neolithic

times and the city has played a central role in European history since Roman times. This rich past will become evident on your tour of the city that includes Alfama – the oldest quarter of Lisbon – the monumental statue of Christ the King and the Monastery of Jeronimos with its intricate late Gothic architecture.

Day 14 Lisbon. Today there is a choice of optional tours and you have the opportunity to visit the fairy tale-like hilltop town of Sintra, the fishing village of Cascais or the sophisticated resort of Estoril.

thE itinERaRyDay 1 London to Venice, Italy.

Enjoy a morning at leisure or join the optional tour to the landmark Frari Church and Scuola di San Rocco.

We continue to the Palazzo Ducale, Italy’s most beautiful Renaissance palace built for Duke Federico da Montefeltro and the Duomo. After visiting the cathedral there is some free time for lunch on your own in one of Urbino’s many restaurants.

Day 5 Split, Croatia. When Emperor Diocletian shook up the Roman Empire by abdicating in 305AD, he had his retirement residence ready: a lavish palace

he had just built in Salona, now Split, in his native Dalmatia. Today’s guided tour will include this amazing palace complex that, when completed, held three temples, a massive mausoleum, and could accommodate 9,000 people. Today it is a vibrant warren of museums, galleries, shops and restaurants mingled with Medieval fortifications, pre-Romanesque churches and Gothic chapels.

Day 6 Dubrovnik. Lord Byron called this majestic walled city “the pearl of the Adriatic,” and it is easy to see why. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is held to be the best-preserved walled city in the Mediterranean with a seafront setting and dramatic mountain backdrop. The city skyline is a medley of bell towers, copper domes and massive 10th-century walls. This morning’s walking tour of the Old Town takes you along the city’s main street, the Stradun or Placa, once a sea channel connecting two ancient settlements and past such landmarks as the Sponza Palace with its elaborate stone exterior, the Baroque Church of St Blaise and Onofriou’s Fountain.

Day 7 Lecce, Italy. Lecce is a city of outstanding historical and architectural treasures. With its abundance of ancient ruins, Baroque churches and noble palaces carved out of honey-coloured local stone, it is a place that will stay long in the memory. The 25,000-seat amphitheatre dating from the 1st century BC in the Piazza St Oronzo is a magnificent legacy of the city’s

Roman past and it is here that our guided tour starts. You will visit the Santa Croce Basilica, which is sumptuously decorated and the impressive Piazza Duomo. Then, visit the stunning Palazzo Tamborino, which will be opened exclusively for you. It was originally built in the 15th century and hides one of the most beautiful secret gardens of Lecce.

Day 8 Sarande, Albania (Butrint) & Corfu, Greek Islands. Surrounded by a picturesque lagoon, Butrint is one of the Ionian’s most remarkable archaeological sites and one of Albania’s most beautiful national parks. Inhabited since prehistoric times, Butrint, in antiquity Buthrotum, was successively the site of a 6th-century Greek colony, a Roman city and a bishopric. Today the site is a rich repository of the past and a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walk along the winding paths to discover layers of civilisation and complete the visit with a view from Butrint’s acropolis and a short visit to the museum. This afternoon we will explore Corfu: visit the Old Fortress rising majestically from a large cliff and surrounded by a fairytale moat. Enjoy a stroll along

ClaSSiCal italy & thE adRiatiC From Venice to Rome aboard the MV Aegean Odyssey4th to 19th October 2016

Of all the countries of the Mediterranean, Italy is perhaps the most alluring: its art, architecture, history and of

course, food has seduced travellers for centuries. Journey from the dazzling splendour of Byzantine Venice and the evocative ruins of Pompeii to the hill towns of Urbino and Lecce. You will also enjoy the outstanding natural beauty of the Adriatic as you cruise to Split and the walled port of Dubrovnik, once described by George Bernard Shaw as “Paradise on Earth”. The ancient site of Butrint in Albania and hedonistic Corfu follow en route to Taormina in Sicily. It is then on to Amalfi and ancient Paestum, followed by romantic Sorrento and Pompeii before the journey ends with a two-night hotel stay in Eternal Rome.

the Venetian-built Esplanade past the colonnade of the Liston Cafe, built during French rule. From here there is an excellent view of the town’s cricket pitch, a legacy from British rule, and the start of the walking tour.

Day 9 At sea. A relaxing day at sea as we cross to Sicily.

Day 10 Taormina, Sicily.

Day 11 Salerno (Paestum or Amalfi) & Sorrento, Italy. Imagine the surprise of the King of Naples when his 17th-century road project revealed three Greek temples in a state of near perfection amid a malaria-infested swamp. He had discovered Paestum, a major city of classic times, surviving untouched since the fall of the Roman Empire. These Greek temples are at the heart of the city and are complemented by magnificent Roman discoveries that include baths, an amphitheatre and the remains of a forum. Alternatively join the tour to Amalfi and settle back for a beautiful drive along the legendary Amalfi Coast to magnificent Ravello. Perched 1150 feet above the Bay of Salerno, the

town is a vision of antique towers, graceful arches and flowering gardens that contrast with the rugged surrounding landscape.

Day 12 Sorrento. Alternatively drive to Herculaneum which was engulfed by volcanic mud in the same eruption that claimed Pompeii. Fortunately for us, this mud sealed and protected entire buildings: today inlaid marble floors, paintings, mosaics and carbonized woods can all be seen.

Day 13 Sorrento. Enjoy a morning at leisure in this lovely cliff-top town before we set sail for our final destination, Rome.

Day 14 Rome. Disembark in Civitavecchia and transfer to your hotel for an included two-night stay. Remainder of day is at leisure.

Day 15 Rome. Immerse yourself in the sights of Rome on a full-day guided tour highlighted by visits inside the Colosseum and St Peter’s Basilica. Or you may

choose to visit Ostia Antica. Buried for centuries, this well-preserved archaeological site is far less visited than Pompeii, yet in many ways provides a more complete picture of daily life in the Roman Empire. Your tour begins at Via delle Tombe, leading to the city gates. Stroll along the Decumanus Maximus, the

main road and visit the Baths of Neptune. Round off your visit with a stop at the Museum Ostiense to view some wonderful sculptures and mosaics.

Day 16 Rome to London. Check out this morning and transfer to the airport for your scheduled flight to London.
