Happy New Year!
It looks like old man winter is finally upon us. While the air may be crisp and the
snow upon us, getting outside remains important for the body mind, body, and
soul. With that in mind, I wanted to pass along a few important weather related
items.
-Clothing: Students should come to school each day prepared to be outside for
recess. Hats, gloves and a winter coat are a must, as are boots when the snow is
on the ground. Boots are in fact a requirement to access the field and bark
area when there is snow on the ground. We contract with a local company to
keep the blacktop plowed for those not wearing boots.
-Temperatures: If temperatures dip down to 15 or below (including windchill),
students will stay indoors. I monitor local weather readings to ensure our
students are safe outside, knowing that while cold air is fresh and good for the
body, when things get too cold it can be uncomfortable and even dangerous for
young people.
-Idling: Spokane Public Schools participate in the no-idling zone program in
Washington State. This program works to reduce pollution from cars around
schools, as small bodies are more impacted by emissions than adult bodies. And
besides, its’s good for the environment as well! Please see the picture below for
additional facts.
Welcome to January,

Finch- Go Mustangs!!
· What is your favorite part of your job? I love getting to know the
students, and helping them broaden their idea of music.
· What are some of the challenges you face? One of the challenges I face is opening a student
up to music if they have a closed mindset.
· When you are not at work what do you like to do? So. Many. Things. Hiking, Kayaking,
Snowshoeing, and movie watching top the list.
· What is something most people don’t know about you? I’ve never dyed my hair.
· What college did you attend? My BA for teaching is from Eastern, and my Masters for writing
curriculum and instructional design is from Western Governors University.
· What was your favorite subject in school? I loved Math. I would like to think I would have
liked Art, too, but it wasn’t offered at the school I attended.
· What is your favorite Spokane restaurant? Downriver Grill, or Gordy’s.
· Best thing you’ve read/seen/heard lately? We saw Frozen 2 last week, it was good, but I’m

January: Whole Grains Make a Difference Whole grains provide health-energizing nutrients that are found in the bran (fiber) and germ. White bread (or refined grain) only provides the endosperm (starch or carbohydrates) and is not as nutrient dense. Choose whole grains every day to energize your health. Our school meals serve nutrient rich whole grains every day and many of them are grown and milled in the Spokane area. When you see the following on the menu, your child is eating whole grains:
• Buns/ bread
• Pizza crust
• Pancakes/ Waffles
• Cereals/ oatmeal
• Flour tortillas
• Tortilla chips
• Brown rice
