The Mustang Booster Club is an organizationdedicated to supporting, promoting andadvancing SMSU athletics.

The objectives of the Mustang Booster Club are:

• To provide scholarship dollars for SMSU athletics.

• To enhance the profile and visibility of the SMSU athletic program, its teams, and its student-athletes.

• To expand the level and scope of support for the SMSU athletic program among thecommunity and alumni.

• To strengthen and establish positive relations with the community and alumniin support of SMSU athletics.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A MUSTANG ATHLETE

MATT ZAGER, 2013 Spring Semester

• 6:30 am - Wake up to the sound of my alarm informing me ofanother week coming to an end. I get up, eat a bowl ofcereal, take my vitamins and I’m off to campus for thelast morning workout of the week.

• 7:00 am - I’m off to the weight room with the team to get a littlestronger than day before!

• 8:00 am - After weights I shower and head to the residentialrestaurant to eat some breakfast. I have to enjoy this foodsince I will be attending three straight physiology classesand I will not have a chance to grab a bite to eat duringlunch.

• 8:30 am - Off to my first class of the day, this class is ExercisePhysiology and lasts for two hours instead of the normalone hour class! Being an athlete I find it important inknowing how the body functions when an individual isworking out so this class is very interesting to me.

• 10:30 am - Off to Human Anatomy and Physiology. This is mysecond class of the day and it’s with Sandy Craner. I tryand get a drink from one of the fountains before I go intoclass to keep my mind fresh.

• 11:30 am - My last and final class of the day. I finish my day off withanother physiology class. Making this day five straighthours of physiology classes! Human Anatomy andPhysiology Lab is my last class and it also lasts for twohours like my first class!

• 1:30 pm - Finish with my last class of the day and head to go getsomething to eat. It seems like forever since breakfast.Light lunch is open at this time and I usually makemyself a sandwich.

• 2:30 pm - After lunch I head to my car and make the short driveback to my apartment. I am able to get some muchneeded relaxing time.

• 3:00 pm - I jump on my computer and check D2L to see what ishappening next week in my classes and to see if I haveeverything turned in that needs to be.

• 4:00 pm - With only eating light lunch I start thinking of what Iwant to eat for supper and begin making it.

• 5:00 pm - After supper and it being Friday I get a chance to gohangout with some of my teammates, I usually callMitch Weg to see what his plans are for the night.

• 9:00 pm - Get home from hanging out with teammates and I’musually pretty tired from the long day so I jump in bedand watch some TV. ESPN is my go-to-show so I cankeep up with my favorite teams!

• 10:30 pm - Time to hit the hay, it’s been a long day and week and Iwill need the rest to be able to get through the comingweek!

SMSU CIVICENGAGEMENT EVENTS

MUSTANG BOOSTER CLUBCIVIC ENGAGEMENT EVENTS

Ag BowlAg Bowl is a community event that celebrates agriculture insouthwestern Minnesota. Ag Bowl offers regional FFA Chapters andindividual participants an opportunity to earn post secondaryscholarship dollars by competing in the Ag Bowl ScholarshipChallenge. Ag Bowl Scholarship Challenge winners are recognizedat Half-time of the Ag Bowl Football Game. Prior to the MustangFootball game, families are treated to a variety of activities at theRegional Event Center. Ag Bowl family activities include, a youthfootball clinic, inflatable games, pony rides, live music, andbarbecue offerings. In addition to the Ag Bowl ScholarshipChallenge and Ag Bowl family activities, participants can choose toparticipate in the Ag Bowl Raffle. All proceeds from the Ag BowlRaffle are designated to the SMSU Scholarship Fund. Since itsinception, Ag Bowl has received the NCAA’s Civic EngagementAward on two different occasions.

WBCA Pink ZoneThe WBCA Pink Zone is an NCAA sponsored event that raisesawareness and funds for breast cancer treatment and research. EachFebruary at a home women’s and men’s basketball double header,the R/A Facility is decorated pink to show support. The teams andcheerleaders wear special pink warm-ups and uniforms to showsupport for the cause. The women’s basketball team also sells theirwarm-up shirts to students and fans and donates all the proceeds tothe Kay Yow Cancer Fund. At halftime student-athletes and coachesgather on the court to donate at least 10 inches of hair to the Locksof Love program.

SmokefestSmokefest is an officially sanctioned Kansas City BBQ Societycontest held on the SMSU campus and hosted by the SMSUDepartment of Athletics. In 2011 Smokefest partnered with theCity of Marshall’s Sounds of Summer Celebration. Smokefest servesas the central location for Friday evening activities during the SOSweek long celebration. Each year nearly 40 barbecue teamsdescend on Marshall to test their BBQ skills in four categories: porkribs, chicken, pork butt and beef brisket. Smokefest activitiesinclude; kids inflatable’s, carnival games, music, authentic BBQofferings and a movie hosted at the Regional Event Center on theSMSU Campus. Since its inception, Smokefest has received theNCAA’s Civic Engagement Award on two different occasions.

Mustang StampedeThe Mustang Stampede is a 5k Walk/Run through SMSU’s campusthat brings together teams, parents, fans, and alumni in support ofSMSU’s women’s athletics teams. Participants can join asindividuals or by forming fundraising teams and compete for themost team members or most dollars raised.

Mustang MailMustang Mail is a pen pal program created and supported by theMustang Booster Club. All SMSU student-athletes are paired upwith students from Marshall Elementary Schools. Students writeand receive letters talking about the importance of school, and whatit means to be a Mustang. During the spring semester we host“Mustang Mail Day” at each school and all students get the chanceto meet their student-athlete pal.

Mustang ShootoutThe Mustang Shootout is a clay shooting competition held annuallyat Shooter’s Sporting Clays in Marshall, MN. Each year nearly onehundred participants form teams to compete for the best team andindividual scores. The Mustang Booster Club helps sponsor theevent with proceeds going towards scholarships for student-athletes.

David & Carol Drown SMSU Golf ClassicThe SMSU Golf Classic is SMSU’s longest running fundraiser. In2011 the SMSU Golf Classic was renamed the David & CarolDrown SMSU Golf Classic. David & Carol Drown first started theevent 28 years ago and remain actively involved in the planning ofthe event each year. The two day event is hosted by the MustangBooster Club with proceeds dedicated to student-athletescholarships at SMSU. The two day event includes golf at theMarshall Golf Club and Tyler Golf Club along with post golfactivities hosted at the Marshall Golf Club. Post golf activitiesinclude; a silent auction, live auction and evening social.

Gold Rush RaffleThe Gold Rush Raffle is SMSU Athletics’ and the Mustang BoosterClub’s largest annual fundraiser. The Raffle is the event to be at onSMSU’s campus. A limited number of tickets are sold for thereverse raffle. Live and silent auctions are also included in theevent, along with black jack games and a variety of great prizes.The grand prize of $5000 is awarded to the raffle ticket holderwhose name is the last to be drawn throughout the night.

ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIPS

• Gifts totaling a minimum of $10,000 are required to establish an endowed scholarship fund.

• Scholarships are awarded from the endowment in accordance with the spending policy adopted by the Foundation. (Currently 5% of the three-year average market value of the endowed fund.)

• Gifts totaling less than $10,000 may be classified as a limited term endowment. Additional contributions will be applied to the corpus until the fund reaches the $10,000 minimum endowment level. No awards are made from limited endowment fund until the balance reaches a minimum of $10,000.

• An endowed scholarship may be named and the criteria may be established by the donor.

• A Scholarship Account Contract will be signed that details the scholarship criteria agreed upon between the Foundation and the Donor.

• All gifts to an endowment shall be irrevocable, unless otherwise approved by the Foundation Board of Directors.

After reviewing your package, you can decide that you don’t want additional seats or benefits. Since you will not use all of the assigned Benefit Dollars, youcould apply those funds to the tax deductible portion of your donation. You would not be allowed to transfer the remaining $50 to another

Booster Club Member or use it to redeem additional apparel.

An additional benefit at the Stampede Level is Hoofprint Dollars that can be used to redeem apparel online. As a Stampede Level member, you would beentitled to use 125 Hoofprint Dollars to spend on Mustang Apparel/Novelty items. If you choose not to use all 125 Hoofprint Dollars, your tax deductible

donation would increase by the unused amount. You would not be allowed to transfer the unused balance to another Booster Club Member or

use it to secure ticket packages, preferred parking passes or chairback upgrades.

Why should I support SMSU athletics?

The athletic programs at Southwest Minnesota State benefit theentire university and, in turn, our surrounding communities.Whether in NSIC or NCAA competition, Mustang athletesdemonstrate the SMSU commitment to high quality in bothacademics and athletics. The outstanding young women andmen who participate each season for the Mustangs are buildingimportant physical and leadership skills while gaining a superioruniversity education. The Mustangs are working to be the prideof southwestern Minnesota.

Who can join the Mustang Booster Club?

All supporters of Mustang Athletics are encouraged to join theMustang Booster Club. You do not have to be an alumnus ofSMSU or a former student-athlete to join.

What is the difference between a restricted gift and an

unrestricted gift?

An unrestricted annual gift supports all 17 varsity sports andhelps offset non-budgeted expenses throughout the course of theyear. A restricted contribution is made to a sport specific fund, a capital project or an endowment.

Is my contribution to the Mustang Booster Club tax

deductible?

Yes, it may be tax deductible in full or in part. You will receive agift receipt from the SMSU Foundation for tax purposes.
