Due to the rupture of the Enbridge-owned natural gas transmission pipeline, B.C.’s natural gas system will be challenged in times of high demand.

That’s why we need our customers to reduce their use of natural gas over the coming months.

You can help by lowering your thermostat, shortening your showers and washing laundry in cold water.

For more information, visit fortisbc.com/reduceyouruse or contact 1-888-224-2710.

B.C.’s natural gas supply will be limited this winter.

Musqueam Education Notice Friday December 14, 2018 Answer to last weeks riddle: a doughnut

This week: There is a word and six letters it contains. Take one away and

twelve is what remains. What word is it?

FEATURED CAREER:

Early Childhood Educator

What? An Early Childhood Educator or ECE is someone who cares for and teaches young children. Who? Child caregivers are trained to understand the developmen-tal needs of children from birth to age twelve. With this knowledge, ECEs plan and operate environments that stimulate emotional, social, and academic learning for the young children. Where? You can find ECEs working in daycares (such as ours!), after school programs, or Pre-K classrooms.

How to Become an ECE To become an ECE, you must complete a Basic Early Childhood Edu-

cation Training Program. Next, you must apply to the ECE Registry to

receive a “License to Practice Certificate” from the government of

BC. If you wish to specialize and continue schooling, you may do post

-basic ECE training and receive Special Needs and Infant Toddler Early

Workshops

Our students get the opportunity to explore health and science related programs offered

at the University of British Columbia. They can engage with faculty members and

program coordinators, try out program resources, and most importantly, get a feel for

what a career in health and sciences could look like.

Academic workshops we have offered in the past include: medicine, nursing, dentistry,

math, pharmacy, mechanical engineering, kinesiology, counselling psychology, audiology

and speech sciences. We also emphasize non-academic activities to meet the holistic

needs of a young Aboriginal person. Some excursions in the past include Science World,

UBC Farm, the Museum of Anthropology, and the Vancouver Aquarium. Students also

participate in cultural activities with our Resident Elder such as medicine pouch making,

bannock making, and a nightly Sharing Circle.

Safe Drinking Water Monitoring Program Charlene Campbell-Wood

1. Drinking Water Helps Maintain the Balance of Body Fluids. Your body is composed of about 60% water. The functions of these bodily fluids include digestion, absorption, circulation, creation of saliva, transportation of nutrients, and maintenance of body temperature.

"Through the posterior pituitary gland, your brain communicates with your kidneys and tells it how much water to excrete as urine or hold onto for reserves," says Guest, who is also an adjunct professor of medicine at Stanford University.

When you're low on fluids, the brain triggers the body's thirst mechanism. And unless you are taking medications that make you thirsty, Guest says, you should listen to those cues and get yourself a drink of water, juice, milk, coffee -- anything but alcohol.

Regular Maintenance Is the Key

Inspecting your home on a regular basis and following good maintenance practices is

the best way to protect your investment in your home. Whether you take care of a

few tasks at a time or several all at once, it is important to get into the habit of doing

them.

While most maintenance is seasonal, there are some things you should do on a

frequent basis year round:

Make sure air vents indoors and outdoors are not blocked by snow or other

debris.

Check and clean range hood filters on a monthly basis.

If there are young children in the house, make sure electrical outlets are

equipped with safety plugs.

Regularly check your house for safety hazards such as loose handrails, lifting or

buckling carpets, etc.

Winter Maintenance

Check and clean or replace furnace air filters each month during the heating

season.

After consulting your hot water tank owner’s manual, drain off a dishpan full of

water from the clean out valve at the bottom of your hot water tank to control

sediment and maintain efficiency.

Clean humidifier two or three times during the winter season.

Vacuum bathroom fan grille.

Vacuum fire and smoke detectors, as dust or spider webs can prevent them

from functioning.

Vacuum radiator grilles on back of refrigerators and freezers and empty and

clean drips trays.

If you have a plumbing fixture that is not used frequently, such as a laundry tub

or spare bathroom sink, tub or shower stall, run some water briefly to keep

water in the trap.

Clean drains in dishwasher, sinks, bathtubs and shower stalls.

Examine windows and doors for frost accumulation or cold air leaks. If found,

make a note to repair or replace it in the spring time.

Vacuum radiator grills on back of refrigerators and freezers and empty and

clean drip trays

Keep snow clear of gas meters, gas appliance vents and exhaust vents and

basement windows

Test plumbing shutoff valves to ensure they are working and to prevent from

seizing

Disconnect water hoses from hose bibs to avoid the hose from freezing and

the hose bib from cracking

Check to see if any icicles are hanging from the house and take note of

location. Icicles are an indicator of possible ice/snow damns

MUSQUEAM ARTISTS - Brief for New Logo Design

Graduate Student Society, October 2018

UBC’s Graduate Student Society is asking for an upcoming Musqueam artist to work with a team from the GSS to design a new logo that will represent the Society. This project is part of the Society’s commitment to shedding their old visual identity that was appropriated from the Haida First Nation

Purpose:

The purpose is to design a logo that will be central to the visual identity of UBC’s Graduate Student Society, which represents 10,000 graduate students. For many years the Society used a logo that was taken from the The Ts’aahl Eagle clan, a Haida clan from the west coast of Haida Gwaii. When this cultural appropriation was discovered the Society made the decision to abandon that design and to seek reconciliation with the Ts’aahl. As part of the process of reconciliation the society committed to a new visual identity that recognises our place on the traditional, unceded, and ancestral territory of the Musqueam people. We also hope that the design will help educate our students (many who are international) about the history of First Nations in what is now British Columbia.

Opportunity:

The artist would work closely with the staff and elected executives of the society in producing a design that is appropriate for the society’s role as a representative organisation for students. The artist will receive payment for their work and the sincere appreciation of the Society. Although the old ‘seamonster’ logo was rightly abandoned the GSS has felt lost without a visual symbol.

What type of design are you looking for:

We are open to a dialog with any artist about what is feasible. We would hope that a design could incorporate elements from Musqueam visual identity, traditional forms or language.

• The design needs to be flexible, so it can be used in a range of media – online, print and on merchandising.

• The design should not be so elaborate it is difficult to reproduce or resize • The design should ideally be monochrome and capable of being used in either white or black /

colour. Our current word-mark is used in white black and a dark blue version to fit the rest of our color palette.

• In terms of format, InDesign and large image files PNG would be preferred, so we can manipulate them easily.

• We’re happy to be led by an artist in terms of design elements, but we’d like something that fits with the aims of society, which are to build a community based on friendship and support for the graduate student community.

• Although we’re on the UBC campus we are a separate organisation, so there is plenty of scope to be creative.

• As we had used the previous logo for more than 30 year we’d like something that has a more modern feel than the old ‘seamonster’. We would like the new logo to remain the symbol of the GSS for the foreseeable future

• The GSS Marketing and Communications Director will be on hand to guide the process although the design will need to be submitted to the GSS Executive Team for final approval.

• Payment: • We are happy to pay in full for any artist’s time based on their normal charge-out rate.

PLEASE SUBMIT A STATEMENT OF INTEREST/ STATEMENT OF CONCEPT TO BEN HILL AT THE GRADUATE STUDENT CENTER: Ben Hill [email protected] or Leona Sparrow at [email protected]

OPPORTUBNITY FOR MUSQUEAM ARTISTS: UBC Campus Safety and Security Topic: Design a logo or badge for UBC Vancouver, Campus Safety and Security Submitted by: Connor Barnsley Purpose: Invitation to discuss the possible inclusion of Musqueam representation into the UBC Vancouver Campus Safety and Security logo/badge. UBC Vancouver, Campus Safety and Security’s mandate is to create a safe and welcoming environment for all people, inclusive of students, faculty, staff and the community at large. In saying this, Campus Safety and Security(CSS) team also recognize the importance of acknowledging that the UBC Point Grey campus is situated on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Musqueam people. To meet the mandate of the department and support ‘Shaping UBC’s Next Century’ strategic goal of ‘partnering with Indigenous communities on and off campus to address the legacy of colonialism and to co-develop knowledge and relationships’, CSS has begun to identify areas where the team can increase awareness and knowledge of historical impacts, current issues of Indigenous peoples and support the relationship between UBC and the Indigenous and Musqueam communities. One initiative that has arisen for consideration is the rebranding of the CSS logo and security badge for uniforms. CSS would like to meet with Musqueam representatives to discuss the possibility of inclusion of Musqueam representation for this and how this may add to the welcoming and respectful environment we wish to create. The CSS department welcomes an opportunity to enhance the Musqueam perspectives within the mandate of their work and to improve the current relationship by seeking guidance for this and future initiatives and directions. Rules and procedures -participants are able to submit more than one design -the winner will receive a $500 stipend from Campus Security -the winning design may be adjusted by UBC Brand and Marketing to reflect UBC’s common look and feel -Campus Security will be using the winning design for patrol officer uniforms. If the department wishes to include the design on other surfaces, it will first consult directly with the designer How to submit your design: -all designs must be submitted by 4pm Friday December 21, 2018 -submit your design, either through email or in person to Leona Sparrow at the Musqueam Band Office or email [email protected] or Connor Barnsley at UBC [email protected]
