OFHS Instrument Repair & Replacement Fund

The OFHS band program currently have approxi-mately 350 students and is estimated to continue to grow in years to come. The large number of stu-dents has brought some challenges when it comes to playable instruments. Despite a very active mu-sic association and supportive administration that provides financial assistance, it is hard to keep up with the financial needs. Some instru-ments are falling apart and are being held together with duct tape. Many of the instruments are over 30 years old. Some stu-dents have had to switch to a different instrument, because of the lack of working instruments. Please consider supporting OFMA's “Rally for Music” campaign and donate to the Instrument Repair and Replacement fund. Go to https://www.gofundme.com/rally-for-music to donate.

Play & Play

Golf, cross country, volleyball, tennis, soccer, ultimate frisbee and football are some of the sports many band stu-dents are involved in. Nate Koostra (pictured on the right), a football player, marches with band during the half-time shows.

In The Spotlight

Cheryl Keith, a.k.a. “Mama Keith”, heads the of the uniform department of the Olmsted Falls Marching Band.

“Mama Keith” has been working with the band for 14 years. In 2014, Mrs. Keith retired from the Olmsted Falls City Schools district after teaching kindergarten and 2nd grade for 32 years. Both of “Mama Keith’s” sons were in the music program starting in 5th grade at Olmsted Falls. She loves working with the band because it keeps her young. The band staff, students and parents appreci-ate her organization, cool head, dedication and love she has for The Pride of Olmsted Falls – The Bulldog Marching Band! Interesting fact: Meredith Gardner (featured above) was one of Mrs. Keith’s 2nd grade students.

They call her “Mama Keith”

Every Friday night during this football season, senior Meredith Gardner feels like she’s running a marathon. The teen has two huge responsibilities but she considers them both a labor of love even though they overlap. Gardner plays the baritone in the Bulldog Marching Band and also serves as one of the student athletic trainers. On game day, Meredith arrives to the school and helps setup water bottles and med kits. In addition, she also assists with taping up players’ wrists and covering any scratches they may have to help them perform at an optimum level. At that point, her day is just getting started. Gardner then races over to the band wing to shuffle on her band uniform, a snug fit over her athletic trainer uniform. Gardner then parades in with the band where she performs in pre-game and half-time shows. Immediately following the half-time show, Meredith takes off her band uniform only to put on her tennis shoes and fanny pack to join the other athletic trainers on the sidelines. There, Gardner is responsible for keeping water bottles on hand for the players and providing ice and tape if needed. She also helps players who are cramping or bleeding and assists head athletic trainer, Kevin Pullella, treat players who are injured on the field.

When the clock runs down signaling the end of the game, Gardner is still on the job. She quickly assists with clean-up efforts before rushing back to the band just in time to parade out of the stadium. While all of this sounds like quite a hectic undertaking for a young person, Gardner takes it all in stride. In fact, she welcomes the challenge and says she is grateful for the opportunity to learn so much about two things that she is so passionate about and that she believes will one day propel her to higher heights. The senior already has ambitious plans to attend the University of Findlay and, of course, ma-jor in physical therapy. She believes getting the much-needed experience now will greatly pre-pare her for her post-secondary journey. Among the people she has to thank for the opportunity are her band director and the head ath-letic trainer who supervises her. “I couldn’t thank band director Julie Budd and the head ath-letic trainer, Kevin Pullella, enough for allowing me to continue to do both of the things that I love so much even though they do overlap,” Gardner said. Gardner also thanks Chris Rebic, co-section guide in the band. “Chris Rebic has been a HUGE help to me last year and this year in bringing my instrument and uniform from the stands right before we line up for the parade. I couldn't do it without him!” Gardner said. Gardner realizes that these experiences have taught her valuable skills and exposed her to a wealth of knowledge regarding sports medicine and rehab therapy. While her future is yet to be written, it’s clear this young woman has the work ethic and time-management skills necessary to allow her to find success in whatever way the path in front of her unfolds.
