Audience Feedback:

Main TaskBy Emma Weeks

Page 2: Music video primary research post production

I opted to conduct a survey to assess the audience

feedback for my music video. The data that I

received and an analysis of it will be found in this

powerpoint.

Gender

• Out of the 8 people surveyed

50% of them were female with

38% of them being male and

1% of those surveyed

identifying as a gender outside

of the gender binary.

• This data suggests that the

music video was accessible by

all genders however may

appeal slightly more to female

viewers.

Age

• The majority of those surveyed

(63%) were between the ages

of 15-19 this suggests that the

video was likely most

accessible to those in this age

bracket.

• Interestingly however one of

those surveyed was over 30

showing an unexpected

interest in the over 30

demographic.

Editing

• The majority of those surveyed stated

that the editing used throughout the

music video successfully conveyed the

feeling of youth.

• The only person who disagreed with this

statement chose the unsure option

meaning that they may not have fully

understood the question.

• This data is important as it conveys the

fact that the majority of those surveyed

felt that the editing style used was

effective.

• This means that our pink overlay was

successful as was our use of fast paced

shots in conveying the idea of youth to

the viewer.

Representation

• This data suggests that we were successful in

incorporating representation aspects into out

music video as gender, sexuality and ethnicity

each have a star rating of over 4 out of 5.

• It is interesting to note that the field which had

the best representation was gender when no

real attention was made in regards to gender

was made in our casting as it shows how far

as a society we have come in regards to

gender representation being viewed as

normal.

• Areas which possibly lead to the sexuality field

receiving a lower rating is the fact that only 1

sexuality was explicitly shown in the music

video.

• Ethnicity was possibly a lower rating due to

the fact that whilst a range of ethnicities were

shown the range was not wildly varied.

Design aspects• The design aspect which was most popular

was props and effects with 63% of those

surveyed stating that they found it to be one

of their 2 favourite aspects featured. This is

possibly because understated gore and

casual visual effects are not something often

found in a student film.

• The second most popular field was editing

which 38% of people chose as one of their

two favourite aspects of the music video this

shows that the use of interesting editing

techniques such as overlays is important in

video creation.

• Costume and location had the lowest level of

response (25%) this is possibly due to the

fact that the majority of people take costume

and location as for granted when watching a

video and do not pay attention to the planning

behind these aspects.

Youth representation

• The majority of those surveyed

(75%) stated that youth was

represented fairly which is good as it

shows that the our original idea for

the music video was successfully

translated into a music video and

successfully consumed by the

viewer.

• The fact that 25% of those surveyed

viewed the music video as an unfair

representation of youth is

disappointing however was it would

have been extremely hard to add

every aspect of youth into a music

video and simultaneously meet the

expectations of every viewer.

Failed to highlight

• Areas of youth which we failed to

highlight include the fact that people

wished for the cast to be more diverse

with some wishing for a wider selection

of genders to be represented.

• Others stated that they felt mental

health issues were under represented

with one person stating that “everyone

is happy” suggesting that we presented

an idealised version of youth and

stripped parts of the realism of youth

from the video.

• Another person surveyed stated that we

presented an “excessive presence of

alcohol” in our music video suggesting

that they feel that this demonises youth.

Indie genre

• The data here shows that 88% of

those surveyed felt that we

successfully created a music

video that conforms to the Indie

genre.

• The only person who disagreed

with this was unsure meaning that

they may not have understood

what the question meant.

• This data shows that we

successfully completed out goal of

creating an Indie music video that

conformed to the style and format

of the indie genre.

Conclusion

• The data from this questionnaire shows that we

successfully represented youth and that we created a

successful Indie music video.

• If it were possible for me to alter any parts of the music

video I would attempt to create a more diverse cast

however I feel that the dynamic of the cast that we had was

good and that we had successful levels of representation

present this can always be improved however.

• I also feel that it is important for us to assess the amount of

time spent on certain design aspects and the impact that

they ultimately have on the product as a whole.
