Music Video Analysis

“Like a G6” by Far East Movement is an electro, hip hop music video, which follows the life of a young woman in preparation for a night out. During the 3:45 minute video, we witness her meeting her friends, buying alcohol and reaching a club. Along the way, many codes and conventions help us identify the Korean lifestyle and culture.

Alcohol, especially Champaign, is shown significantly while partying and expensive clothing like the shades, jewellery, modern suits, to represent the glamorous lifestyle they live in. The red lighting in the club contrasts to natural lighting outside where the girls are buying alcohol making the setting clear that it’s a nightclub. One of the singers is holding helmet, whilst walking to a private holding a small suitcase and this gives the audience the idea that it will yet be another short at another luxurious holiday, involving partying.

On numerous occasions, the characters are consistently smiling and laughing, especially when holding alcohol; representing that alcohol is essential on a night out. At one occasion one of the singers is pointing at champagne and expensive watch to brag about the expensive items they own, giving the audience a chance of escapism. In the party scene’s, the lift their hands up in time with the music in unison, using hand gestures to illustrate a ‘G6’ when the lyrics “Like a G6” is being sung.

The modern metallic clothes with the highly fashionable shades highlight their wealth and the fact that they’re in a club and dancing to the fast paced song makes the genre clear. The “To do list” on the IPAD that is shown in the beginning, giving the audience an expectation of what the person’s day will involve whilst confirming that type of luxury life they’re living. The revealing red dress the character is wearing shows her as a seductive, outgoing person as this is what they want the audience to perceive.

POV positions are used throughout the music video, as it follows the main character, involving the audience and heightens realism. We see events through the actresses’ eyes, as if they were experiencing the events themselves. Hand held shots are imputed when the character is walking, which again gives a sense of realism. Tracking is used to follow the action of the girl greeting her friends all the way to the club. Tilting and zooming; particularly ascending is also used at the scene of the club, whilst the singer sings into the camera. This allows the audience to have a first-hand experience on how enjoyable the event is. Medium close up helps the audience to identify the main character and the medium long shot at party scene, shows the singers’ clothes and their dancing (highlighting the enjoyable experience) whilst introducing other characters. Eye level shot is used to identify with the character and a CCTV effect is applied for transitions.
