Music video analysis

I and my partner did this together as we thought it would be a good idea for us to watch the same video and see what we both take from it both the positives and the negatives. Doing this will help us to gain new ideas and inspiration for our music video.

The video we looked as is similar to our genre and here is the link below:

Positives -

Instrumental at the beginning of the video has backed up our decision to have one at the beginning of ours as it gives us time to set the scene and although this was not mention by our focus group it seems popular and is a little twist.

Piano keys playing by itself which we think is really creative and the track along the piano keys playing is a really good camera angle to use and we will be including shots of the piano as this is a common convention or target audience want to see so the tracking angle was a good idea we are going to consider using.

The writing on the clear plastic we thought was a good idea of showing the character express his feelings and helped to tell the story and to us acted as a divider from him and us in the outside world which is something we thought was good but we won’t be using as we dont think this will fit in with our chosen song and the lyrics and is not a convention we found during our research.

We also really liked the representations of being alone and trapped as this is something we want to express in our music video that our artist is alone and we thought this was shown really well as we see him stood inside at the window with his hand on, in a dark room with a spotlight on him and in an empty room and we are going to portray this through nature and home as this fits our lyrics keeping a link with Goodwin’s theory.

The use of the empty house we also found significant and key to our music video as this isn’t where she feels at home therefor she feels empty and alone and to contrast this we are going o show where she most feels as home with her friends again linking with Goodwin’s theory.

Negatives -

Lip synching is okay but the artist/actor doesn’t seem as though he means the words and there doesn’t seem to be a lot of emotion in his face telling the audience a story and this is something we want to make sure is perfect in ours as we want the audience to feel connected with the artist through pure emoticon and meaning of the song and we feel this is done through facial expressions and we didn’t really feel the emoticon through this we just felt the emotions through what we were seeing and the tone of voice.

Overall although this video was a male singer/songwriter we felt as though there was a lot of inspiration and ideas we could take from it as alot of the video related to our lyrics and what we wanted to portray so this has helped us make our ideas more final and backed them up but also give us new ones.
