Learn music theory: ABRSM Grades 1&2
Learning objectives
• What rests are
• Composing our own rhythms
What is a rest?
• In a (4/4) we can fit 4 crotchets
• We need to have 4 crotchets in it
• But what if we don’t want to play 4 notes?
What is a rest?• A rest is a part of a bar where we don’t play a note
We can skip a note…
Types of rest• Just like crotchets, minims, and semibreves are all written differently
• Rests are written differently depending on their length
Minim rest• A small rectangle on top of the middle line
Semibreve rest• A small rectangle below the fourth line (remember we count from
the bottom!)
Writing our own rhythms!
• We can finally start writing!
• We will only try to write 2 bars in (4/4)
• Then you will try to do the same in (3/4)!
