  • Band Materials List

Everyone:● Music Stand (there’s ~40 at the school if

someone NEEDS to borrow one)● Metronome (there are free apps)● Chromatic tuner (there are also free apps)● Folder to keep your music in● Pencil to write on your music with

  • Flute

    ● Cleaning rod (plastic is preferred, wooden/metal is fine)○ Might come with your instrument

    ● Silk Cleaning Cloth○ Handkerchief is a cheaper alternative○ There are also giant furry rods. (pad savers - they do not save the pads, they make it worse) DO

NOT GET THEM.○ No seriously. DON’T GET THE GIANT FURRY RODS

    OR

    ● A Silk Flute Swab

  • Clarinet

    ● Cork grease○ May already come with instrument rental

    ● Cleaning swab○ The silk ones with a little weight on the other end

    ● Beginner: A few size 2-2 ½ reeds (more like several)● Concert 2 ½ - 3● Symphonic 3- 3 ½

    ○ Rico Royals or Vandoren brand

  • Saxophone● Beginner 2-2 ½ reeds (more like several)● Concert 2 ½ - 3● Symphonic 3 - 3 ½

    ○ Rico Royals or Vandoren are highly recommended● Cleaning swab

    ○ Just like clarinet, but larger○ There are also giant furry rods. DO NOT GET THEM○ Pad savers are the worst thing you can do to your instrument

**All woodwind swabs/clothes MUST be thin. If they are thick, they will get STUCK.

  • Trumpet● Slide grease

    ○ Sometimes looks like chapstick■ Don’t put it on your lips because it’s bad

    ● Valve oil● Snake brush

    ○ Specifically for trumpets. Looks like a piece of rubber string, with a brush at both ends

  • Trombone

    ● Slide Cream○ For the inner tubing

    ● Tuning Slide Grease○ For the tuning slide

    ● Small spray bottle○ For water

  • Percussion

    ● Percussion Kit!○ Includes the snare drum AND bell-set○ Please get this.

    ● Sticks and Mallets○ Sticks for Snare drum, Mallets for bell set○ Snare Drum Sticks:

    ○ Bell Mallets: ■ VicFirth M5 or M6 OR■ Innovative Percussion F12, OS3, or OS5■ Mallet Bag

  • If the whole kit is too much then I strongly recommended to get

something like this - where it has bells and drum pad and sticks

and a bag/case to keep everything in

You could even get something like this if you can’t get those other

Ones. But having bells as well as snare is v important

  • Method BooksWe are going to be using the Sound Innovations method book this year. The book comes in a physical and digital format, however I strongly recommend getting the physical copy so you can have the book in person instead of needing to rely on the technology.

  • Beginning BandYou will be getting Sound Innovations Book 1 (blue)

Very important: make sure you get the right book for your instrument.

Here is the link on alfred.com

  • Beginning percussionYou need to get the one that is called combined percussion. Here is the link on alfred.com and on amazon

The combined percussion has both snare/bass drum parts as well as bell parts so you can play everything. Very important that you can play everything and not be stuck just doing one forever.

  • Jazz band things (open to concert/symphonic students only)

Jazz Band is an after school extra curricular activity that will start in a few weeks. It is only open to students who are in concert or symphonic band, as well as students who have had at least one year of band with me.

When we are a bit more settled into the school year, I will send out a notice for those students interested in Jazz Band.

There will be a Jazz method book, but I need to pick the right one - it’ll help with improvising!!
