Carlo Opera Company are a n institution i n the opera world almost as much as i s L a Scala , much more so i n this count-t r y , which has not L a S c a l a but has the S a n Car lo O p e r a and has had i t for twenty-eight years .

" F o r a l l these years Fortune Gallo has kept the garden of opera watered in times and places where i t would have gone back to s tark desert but for h i m . H e i s a wonder-worker. F o r twenty-eight years he has gone on, while bigger and gaudier and much better ballyhooed opera companies have fcund themselves looking at the Sherif f 's lock on the door.

" W e do not know the secret, except this , that Fortune Gallo runs his on a plan that does not contemplate deficits for r i c h patrons to pay off and at the same time gives his customers their money's worth .

" H e r e ' s to Fortune Gallo , and while we are toast ing this remarkable impresario let us not forget the redoubtable Car lo Peroni , his conductor, his one and only conductor, whose baton leads a l l the performances, evenings and matinees, one r ight after the other as they come, a prodigious feat that stamps h i m the i r o n m a n amongst conductors. "

T h e above editorial appeared i n the S a n F r a n c i s c o Chronicle for F e b r u a r y 28, 1938. I t is reprinted here, as i t expresses more than a n y t h i n g else that can be said the consensus of opinion in regard to the annual vis i t of the S a n Carlo Opera Company to Port land and to the lovely Paramount T h e a t r e .

"Rigoletto," the story of which was taken from Victor - Hugo's " L e roi s'amvise," deals with the Duke of Mantua, a wild youth, who is assisted in his escapades by his jester, Rigoletto, an ugly, hump-backed man. W e meet him f i rs t helping the Duke to win the affections of the wife of the Count Ceprano, sand-af terward the wife of Count Monterone. Both husbands curse the vile Rigoletto and swear to be avenged. Monterone especially hurls such a fearful curse at therri; that Rigoletto shudders. Rigoletto has one tender point; i t is his blind love for his beautiful-..daughter, Gi lda , whom he brings up carefully, keeping her hidden from the: world, and shielding her from all wickedness. B u t the cunning Duke discovers Gi lda and gains her love under the assumed name of a student, called Gualt ier Malde.

Gi lda is f inal ly carried off by Ceprano and two other courtiers, aided by her own father, who holds the ladder, believing that Count Ceprano's wife is to be the victim. A mask blinds Rigoletto, and he discovers, too late, by Gilda's cries that he has been duped.

Gilda is brought to the Duke 's palace. Rigoletto appears in the midst of the courtiers to claim Gilda, and then they hear that she, whom they believed to be his mistress, is his daughter, for whose honor he is wi l l ing to sacrifice everything. Gi lda enters and, though she sees that she has been deceived, implores her father to pardon the Duke, whom she sti l l loves. B u t Rigoletto vows vengeance, and engages Sparafucile to stab the Duke.

| A C T I V . • •

Sparafucile decoys the Duke into his inn, where his sister, Maddalena, awaits him. She, too, is enamored of the Duke, who makes love to her, : and she entreats her brother to have mercy on him. Sparafucile declares that he w i l l . wai t unti l midnight, and will spare him i f another vict im should turn up before then. Meanwhile, Rigoletto persuades his daughter to f ly from the Duke 's pursuit , but before he takes her away he wants to show her lover's fickleness in order to cure her of her love. ......

Gilda comes to the inn in masculine attire and, hear ing the discourse between Sparafucile and his : s ister , resolves to save her lover. She enters the inn and is instantly put to death, placed in a sack and given to Rigoletto, who proceeds to the r iver to dispose of the body. A t this instant he hears the voice of the Duke, who passes by, singing a frivolous tune. T e r r i f i e d , Rigoletto opens the sack and sees his own daughter, who is yet able to tel l h im that she gave her life for that of her faithless lover, the Duke , and then expires. W i t h an awful cry , the unhappy father s inks upon the corpse. Count Monterone's curse has been fulfi l led.

CHATTER » » » » » Kirsten Flagstad has broken a l l exist

ing records for operatic and concert a t tendance at the Metropolitan Opera House in New Y o r k . I t is entirely due to her immense following and tremendous box office power that the Metropolitan departed from its usual policy and presented what had been previously considered a dangerous opening night 's opera, " T r i s t a n and Isolde, " on the f i rs t night of this year's opera season in New York. "Standing room only" w a s at a premium and repeat performances were immediately scheduled.

* # #

Small wonder that Madame F l a g s t a d ' s managers are t r y i n g to persuade the great prima donna to give up her plans of retirement after this season. I t seems Flagstad wants to return to her home i n her native land.

If you do not already have your tickets for Flagstad's concert on M a y 18, we suggest that you send in your m a i l order immediately to be certain that you w i l l hear this grand opera star , who has been called the " S a v i o r of the Metropolitan Opera Company. "

* * * At long last the announcement has

definitely been made that Helen H a y e s will appear in Portland in " V i c t o r i a Eegina." She is booked by the H e i l i g Theatre Company for the Municipal A u ditorium for four nights and a Wednesday matinee . The dates are M a y 9, 10, 11 and 12.

The mere mention of the name " H e l e n Hayes" has created a large number of enquiries from hundreds of parties who anticipate seeing " V i c t o r i a K e g i n a . " No reservations have been taken yet, but from now on the mai l orders w i l l be accepted and filled in the order that they are received. I n Detroit the management was forced to return over $20,000 in m a i l orders from disappointed patrons who waited too long to order seats, which were entirely sold out by m a i l .

Dr. C. A . Howard, President of the Eastern Oregon N o r m a l School, wrote : "On a recent trip to Chicago I s a w Helen

ayes in 'Victoria E e g i n a . ' I t is a m a g nificent production and Miss H a y e s is exquisite as Queen V i c t o r i a . I ' m glad he people of Oregon are going to enjoy his grand show."

* * * The music room at the m a i n l ibrary

as been busy during the last few weeks upplying librettos, scores, stories of the peras and al l the source mater ia l that

goes with grand opera, proving to be a big help to those who sought to learn more about the operas.
