AENG  352-­‐  Design  Studio  II-­‐  The  Architecture  of  Expression-­‐  Fall  2011  

 

The  objective  of  this  second  project  is  to  explore  the  power  of  architecture  to  express  meaning  through  form  and  space.  Past  projects  have  included  the  expression  of  art,  performance,  identity  and  freedom.  This  semester  we  will  be  exploring  the  spatial  expression  of  music.  

 

Since  first  attributed  this  quality  in  the  late  1700’s  by  philosopher  Goethe,  architecture  has  been  called  “frozen  music”.  Many  of  the  dynamic  characteristics  of  music  that  give  it  quality  and  excellence  have  parallel  attributes  in  the  world  of  architecture-­‐  rhythm,  balance,  climax,  focus,  repetition,  measure,  harmony  and  flow.  

 

These  attributes,  and  their  parallelisms,  will  be  the  key  to  designing  the  space  and  form  of  your  project  to  symbolize,  express  and  facilitate  the  enjoyment  of  music.  Taking  a  layered  approach  of  both  expression  and  function  you  are  required  to  design  a  music  pavilion  for  contemporary  middle-­‐eastern  music  performance  in  the  south  end  of  Azhar  Park  here  in  Cairo.  Maps  showing  the  site  and  specific  location  of  the  chosen  plot  of  land  will  be  presented  in  class.  Students  are  expected  to  visit  the  site  to  gather  relevant  visual  and  physical  data  to  inform  their  site  analysis  and  consequent  design  process.  

Program:  

• Backstage:  including  o dressing  rooms  for  both  sexes  o showers  and  bathrooms  for  both  sexes  o 2  acoustically  treated  rehearsal  spaces  o storage  

• Electrical  and  Audio/Visual  control  room  • Performance  stage  • Open  air  seating  for  150  persons  • Audience  bathrooms  • Ticket  booth  • Any  additional  appropriate  services  needed

Using  sticks  and  threads.                  Using  traditional  colors  of  threads  to  reflect  the  traditional  music.                            Using  sticks  with  different  heights  

1. Pre-­‐schematic  design  A  Spine  that  consists  of  different  height  panels  that  takes  an  irregular  curves  and  some  of  these  panels  are  leaning  slightly.    

                       Transferring  this  sticks  to  colored  panels  that  has  a  traditional  pattern  of  Ramadan’s  tent.    

                               Panels  with  Ramadan’s  tent  pattern  engraved  on  the  panel  to  the  reflect  the  shape  of  it  with  the  color  on  the  panel.

   2. Design  

• Smooth,  dynamic,  and  kinetic  • Mobile  vertical  shatters  with  colored  printed  glass    • Deign  of  glass  faced  • Shatters  act  as  a  protection  against  sun  reflects  the  rays  outside  because  of  colors.  • Contextual:  due  to  the  reflection  of  the  surrounding,  element  façade  gains  rhythm.  

 

 • The  design  is  consists  of  the  circles  different  is  diameter  and  the  panels  different  in  heights  and  color  representing  the  

sound  wave  of  the  traditional  music  as  he  panels  takes  the  colors  and  the  pattern  of  the  Arabic  Ramadan  rent  that  represents  the  traditional  music  in  Egypt.    

• The  small  circle  is  for  the  stage  and  the  backstage  overlooking  a  bigger  circle,  which  is  for  the  sitting  area  for  the  audience,  and  back  to  the  sitting  area  there  are  the  control  room  and  the  electricity  room.  

     

Some  panels  at  the  biggest  circle  that  has  the  sitting  area  are  movable  panels  as  the  can  fold  it  if  there  is  no  performance  or  if  there  is  another  use  of  the  pavilion.  The  panels  move  in  the  x-­‐axis  that  can  close  and  open  by  a  certain  space.  

 Daylight  Shot:  

As  this  is  a  pavilion  in  the  azhar  park,  it  is  important  to  consider  the  light  into  consideration  while  designing.  Thus,  the  music  pavilion  at  day  has  a  total  reflection  of  the  color  and  the  pattern  inside  and  outside  the  pavilion  forming  an  interesting  shape  by  the  colors  and  the  patterns.

 As  it  is  a  music  pavilion,  it  is  important  also  to  consider  the  artcial  light  inside  the  pavilion  and  how  it  will  reflect  on  the  context  around  it.      INTERIOR  SHOTS:
