Neighborhood Music School

Neighborhood Music School (NMS) is one of the 10 largest non-profit community arts organizations in the country. Serving 3,000-plus students each year, NMS creates community, sparks potential and shares joy through the arts. NMS students range from toddlers to seniors in their 90s, and represent diverse socioeconomic backgrounds. NMS offers instruction and ensemble opportunities on 30 instruments, plus classes in dance and drama. Over 500 students each year receive financial aid, including nearly 100 from New Haven Public Schools, many of whom participate in NMS’s City Initiative program, which provides tuition-free opportunities for 50-60 middle and high school students. Participants receive individual instrumental instruction and leadership opportunities, and are encouraged to audition for the Greater New Haven Youth Ensembles, including the Greater New Haven Symphonic Wind Ensemble represented here tonight. These ensembles provide an extraordinary experience for NHPS students to play alongside the best young musicians in the region.

The Music in Schools Initiative at the Yale School of Music, in collaboration with New Haven Public Schools, offers the All-City Honors Ensembles on Saturdays during the school year. Students selected by audition participate in two to three levels of choir, orchestra, and band.

During the three-hour program running from Fall through Spring, graduate teaching artists and New Haven teachers instruct and mentor students in large ensembles, chamber music, and sectionals. 200 students participated in the ensembles in 2014–2015, representing about 1% of all students in New Haven.

These programs are the largest in the Music in Schools Initiative, and provide tuition-free performance opportunities for students beyond the activities they have in their home schools. In addition, the All-City Honors Ensembles pro- vide practical training and work for graduate teaching artists. They work in collaboration with the ensemble conductors, most of whom are New Haven Public School music teachers.

Music Haven is a local independent organization that provides free instruments, group classes, individual music lessons, and ensemble and leadership develop- ment opportunities to young people (ages 6–18) from low-income New Haven neighborhoods. All programming is 100% tuition-free.

Music Haven's teachers are conservatory-trained professional musicians, and its resident ensemble, the Haven String Quartet, presents both a premiere ticketed concert series and free community concerts and workshops throughout the region.

Yale School of Music graduate Tina Lee Hadari founded Music Haven in 2006, convinced that a professional string quartet can contribute to social change. Since then, the organization has grown to serve more than 80 students and their families. Music Haven has been recognized as a top 50 after-school arts program in the country by the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities five years in a row.

New Haven Symphony Orchestra

The mission of the New Haven Symphony Orchestra (NHSO) is to increase the impact and value of orchestral music for our audiences through high quality, affordable performances and educational programming. Our musicians inspire, delight, challenge, and unite larger and more diverse communities.

The Vision of the New Haven Symphony Orchestra is to celebrate our classical music heritage, enriched through new American compositions, by expanding opportunities for symphonic performances and music education. We will celebrate this Vision through: artistically excellent and diverse performances by orchestra members and guest artists to wider audiences centered in symphony and pops concerts and performances by chamber orchestras and ensembles; promotion of a wider appreciation of American music through commissions, performances, and educational programs in multiple venues that feature the rich diversity of cultural influences on American music; support of classical music education, especially through partnerships with school music programs, integrated curriculum development, and youth and community orchestras; performances that introduce to children and families our classical music heritage and the major forms of its presentation; and social networks, recordings, broadcasts, and new media that celebrate the rich heritage and variety of classical music.

William Boughton, guest conductor

William Boughton was born into a musical family: his grandfather (Rutland Boughton) was a composer, his father a professional viola player, and his mother a singer. After cello studies at the New England Conservatory (Boston), Guildhall School of Music (London), and Prague Academy, he entered the profession in London, playing with the Royal Philharmonic, BBC, and London Sinfonietta.

The experience of playing in orchestras led to a passion to pursue a career in conducting and he decided to return to studies first with George Hurst and then with Sir Colin Davis. In 1980, he formed the English Symphony Orchestra and developed the ESO’s repertoire through the Baroque period to Viennese classics and into contemporary music. During his time with the ESO, he commissioned more than 20 works from such composers as Peter Sculthorpe, John Joubert, Anthony Powers, Michael Berkeley, John Metcalf, Stephen Roberts, and Adrian Williams. The depth of his partnership with the ESO was epitomized in 1985 when, as Artistic Director of the Malvern Festival, he collaborated with Sir Michael Tippett in presenting a musical celebration of the composer’s eightieth birthday, which became the subject of a BBC “Omnibus” documentary.

With the ESO on Nimbus Records, he built a significant discography of internationally acclaimed recordings—predominantly of English music—a number of which reached the Top Ten on the US charts. During his final years with the ESO, Boughton successfully launched the first ESO Elgar Festival in Malvern and Worcester, and also celebrated the orchestra’s 25th Anniversary performing a complete Beethoven symphony cycle, in which he created a new series of pre-concert performances of British contemporary music, including works by Birtwistle, Knussen, Watkins, Woolrich, Holloway, and Turnage. He has participated in a number of high-profile arts programs for BBC Television, a radio program about Elgar that was broadcast in New York, Chicago, Washington, and Boston in 2006, and a series entitled “1st Eleven” for Classic FM, during the 2006 Soccer World Cup. He has guest conducted major orchestras around the world, including the San Francisco, London, and Helsinki Symphony Orchestras.

In July 2007, he became the tenth Music Director of the New Haven Symphony Orchestra, with whom he has instituted a Composer-in-Residence program and undertaken a major recording project of the works of William Walton; the first recording—Walton’s Violin Concerto and First Symphony—was released by Nimbus in 2010 and selected as a Critic’s Choice for 2010 by prestigious Gramophone Magazine. Under Boughton’s leadership, the NHSO was awarded an ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming in both 2010 and 2014.

Thomas C. Duffy, guest conductor

Thomas C. Duffy is Professor (Adjunct) of Music and Director of University Bands at Yale University, where he has worked since 1982. Established composer, conductor, teacher, administrator, and a leader, his interests and research range from non-tonal analysis to jazz, from wind band history to creativity and the brain. Under his direction, the Yale Bands have performed at conferences of the College Band Directors National Association and New England College Band Association; for club audiences at NYC’s Village Vanguard and Iridium, Ronnie Scott’s (London), and the Belmont (Bermuda); performed as part of the inaugural ceremonies for President George H.W. Bush; and concertized in nineteen countries in the course of sixteen international tours.

Duffy produced a two-year lecture/performance series, Music and the Brain, with the Yale School of Medicine; and, with the Yale School of Nursing, de- veloped a musical intervention to train nursing students to better hear and identify body sounds with the stethoscope. He combined his interests in music and science to create a genre of music for the bilateral conductor — in which a “split-brained conductor” must conduct a different meter in each hand, sharing downbeats. His compositions have introduced a generation of school musicians to aleatory, the integration of spoken/sung words and “body rhythms” with instrumental performance, and the pairing of music with political, social, his- torical and scientific themes. He has been awarded the Yale Tercentennial Medal for Composition, the Elm/Ivy Award, the Yale School of Music Cultural Leader- ship Citation, and certificates of appreciation by the United States Attorney’s Office for his Yale 4/Peace: Rap for Justice concerts.

From 1996 to 2006, he served as Associate, Deputy and Acting Dean of the Yale School of Music. He has served as a member of the Fulbright National Selection Committee, the Tanglewood II Symposium planning committee, the Grammy Foundation Music Educators Award Screening Committee, and completed the MLE program at the Harvard University Institute for Management and Leadership in Education. He has served as president of the Connecticut Composers Inc., the New England College Band Directors Association, and the College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA); editor of the CBDNA Journal; publicity chair for the World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles; and chair of the Connecticut Music Educators Association’s Pro- fessional Affairs and Government Relations committees. For nine years, he represented music education in Yale’s Teacher Preparation Program. He is a member of American Bandmasters Association, American Composers Alliance, the Connecticut Academy of Arts and Sciences, Connecticut Composers In- corporated, the Social Science Club, and BMI. Duffy has conducted ensembles all over the world, including the 2011 NAFME National Honor Band in the Kennedy Center, Washington, D.C.
