Magazine Contents Page Analysis

Page 2: Music Magazine Contents Analysis

Title ‘contents’ with information on the issue number and date.

Letter from the editor with an image of the magazine cover.

Contents page is mostly pictorial with relevant information and page numbers. This is important for visually orientated readers who are unlikely to read lists and lists of writing to find the band they want to read about. Main image is not necessarily what is on the cover.

Simple black on white text with yellow to make it a little more colourful

Page numbers and article names under subheadings. This makes it easier for the reader to find what they might be interested in.

Pull quote relevant to the front page.

Follows same layout with ‘contents’ title and information, pull quote, letter from the editor and an image of the magazine cover, pictures with page numbers and a list of articles and page numbers.

Advertising subscriptions. A good place to advertise because most people will turn to this page first.

Slightly different layout with the ‘contents’ title on the left and a very large image taking up half the page.

Letter from the editor also has an image of the editor with it.

Less images and the images that are included are embedded into the contents list.

No pull quote. But the contents list does have icons to show which articles are cover stories.

The letter from the editor is a sort of sample of what the writing in the articles will be like. It will set the tone with language choices, themes and empathising with the reader.

The themes and colour schemes are consistent throughout different issues. Even when the contents page has been changed it still tries to stay familiar to the reader.

The images try to portray the band in what the readers will relate with. Studio shot images can be serious, to show the reader they are serious about their music, or fun, to show they are around to have a good time. Alternatively, images of live performances show the bands doing what they do best.
