MUSIC NOTES

Today before High Mass, St . Gregory ’s Choir wil l s ing the motet Princeps gloriosiss ime by Luca Marenzio (1556-1599). The text is for the Feast of S t . Michael and Al l Angel s which we celebrate today. Marenzio composed a stunningly beautiful motet , concluding with one of the greatest Alleluia sect ions. Today the Choristers s ing for the f irst t ime this season. During Communion they wil l s ing the Eucharist ic motet Panis angel icus by César Franck (1822-1890) . They wil l be accompanied by organ and cel lo . Thank you to cel l is t Wayne Arndt for sharing his talent with us today. He wil l give a ce l lo demonstrat ion to the choristers after High Mass. The organ piece after High Mass is Litanies by Jehan Alain (1911 -1940). Ala in l ived a tragical ly short l ife; he was k i l led in a violent gun f ight during World War II . His s is ter , Mar ie-Clar ie Ala in, went on to become one of the 20 t h century ’s most important organis ts , part icular ly through her recordings of J . S. Bach. A l i tany is a ser ies of pr ayers and supplicat ions. The most notable l i tany used at Grace Church is the Great Litany, used on Sundays in Advent and Lent. Here Jehan Alain has set a musica l l i tany. In the beginning of t he piece, the trumpet announces the main theme. The shimmering choruses o f the organ then take over , repeating the theme in many different moods and textures . The piece gradual ly builds , culminating in a huge outburst . - J o s eph Arndt , D ir e c t or o f Mus i c

Collect of the Day

Celebrant The Lord be with you.

People And also with you.

Celebrant Let us pray.

Everlasting God, you have ordained and constituted in a wonderful order the ministries of angels and mortals: Mercifully grant that, as your holy angels always serve and worship you in heaven, so by your appointment they may help and defend us here on earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

T H E L I T U R G Y O F T H E W O R D

First Reading—Genesis 28: 10-17 Jacob left Beer-sheba and went toward Haran. He came to a certain place and stayed there for the night, because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones of the place, he put it under his head and lay down in that place. And he dreamed that there was a ladder set up on the earth, the top of it reaching to heaven; and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. And the LORD stood beside him and said, “I am the LORD, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie I will give to you and to your offspring; and your offspring shall be like the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south; and all the families of the earth shall be blessed in you and in your offspring. Know that I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.” Then Jacob woke from his sleep and said, “Surely the LORD is in this place-- and I did not know it!” And he was afraid, and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.”

Reader The Word of the Lord.

People Thanks be to God.

Bless the LORD, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy Name. Bless

the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits. All repeat the refrain

He will not always accuse us, nor will he keep his anger for ever. He has not dealt

with us according to our sins, nor rewarded us according to our wickedness.

All repeat the refrain

For as the heavens are high above the earth, so is his mercy great upon those who

fear him. As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our sins from

us. All repeat the refrain

As a father cares for his children, so does the LORD care for those who fear him.

For he himself knows whereof we are made; he remembers that we are but dust.

All repeat the refrain

Second Reading—Revelation 12: 7-12 War broke out in heaven; Michael and his angels fought against the dragon. The dragon and his angels fought back, but they were defeated, and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. The great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world-- he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him. Then I heard a loud voice in heaven, proclaiming, “Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Messiah, for the accuser of our comrades has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God. But they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they did not cling to life even in the face of death. Rejoice then, you heavens and those who dwell in them! But woe to the earth and the sea, for the devil has come down to you with great wrath, because he knows that his time is short!”

When Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him, he said of him, “Here is truly an Israelite in whom there is no deceit!” Nathanael asked him, “Where did you get to know me?” Jesus answered, “I saw you under the fig tree before Philip called you.” Nathanael replied, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!” Jesus answered, “Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than these.” And he said to him, “Very truly, I tell you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.”

Prayers of the People—Form VII Let us pray for the holy Catholic Church throughout the world: that the Lord God would deign to keep it in unity, peace, and safety.

Here and after each petition is sung

VzzzzyvrvyvtzvRv/vvrvztvzzzYvzzz/ Lord, in your mer-cy, Hear our prayer.

Let us pray for Mark our bishop, for all bishops, priests, and deacons, and for all who minister in Christ’s holy Church: that in their various callings they may serve God faithfully and devoutly.

Let us pray for all who do not know God as he is revealed in Jesus Christ: that the light of the Gospel may shine in their hearts.

Let us pray for all the nations and peoples of the world, and for those who bear authority among them: that in all their doings they may seek both peace and justice.

Let us pray for the sick and the sorrowful, the hungry and the homeless, the desolate and the oppressed: that the Father of mercies would strengthen, support, and relieve them.

Let us pray for the faithful departed: that the Lord our God would grant them

refreshment, light, and peace.

The Celebrant adds a concluding Collect.

Confession of Sin

Celebrant Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

The Celebrant says Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.

It is truly right to glorify you, Father, and to give you thanks; for you alone are God, living and true, dwelling in light inaccessible from before time and for ever. Fountain of life and source of all goodness, you made all things and fill them with your blessing; you created them to rejoice in the splendor of your radiance. Countless throngs of angels stand before you to serve you night and day, and beholding the glory of your presence, they offer you unceasing praise. Joining with them, and giving voice to every creature under heaven, we acclaim you and glorify your Name as we sing,

The people remain standing. The Celebrant continues

We acclaim you holy Lord, glorious in power. Your mighty works reveal your wisdom and love. You formed us in your own image, giving the whole world into our care, so that, in obedience to you, our Creator, we might rule and serve all your creatures. When our disobedience took us far from you, you did not abandon us to the power of death. In your mercy you came to your help, so that in s eeking you we might find you. Again and again you called us into covenant with you, and through the prophets you taught us to hope for salvation.

Father, you loved the world so much that in the fullness of time you sent your only son to be our Savior. Incarnate by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, he lived as one of us, yet without sin. To the poor he proclaimed the good news of salvation; to prisoners, freedom; to the sorrowful, joy. To fulfill your purpose he gave himself up to death; and, rising from the grave, destroyed death, and made the whole creation new. And, that we might live no longer for ourselves, but for him who died and rose for us, he sent the Holy Spirit, his own first gift for those who believe, to complete his work in the world, and to bring to fulfillment the sanctification of all. When the hour had come for him to be glorified by you, his heavenly Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end; at supper with them he took bread, and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his discip les, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Father, we now celebrate this memorial of our redemption. Recalling Christ’s death and his descent among the dead, proclaiming his resurrection and ascension to you

Lord, we pray that in your goodness and mercy your Holy Spirit may descend upon us, and upon these gifts , sanctifying them and showing them to be holy gifts for your holy people, the bread of life and the cup of salvation, the Body and Blood of your Son Jesus Christ. Grant that all who share this bread and cup may become one body and one spirit, a living sacrifice in Christ, to the praise of your Name. Remember, Lord, your one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church, redeemed by the blood of your Christ. Reveal its unity, guard its faith, and preserve it in peace. Remember all who minister in your Church. Remember all your people, and those who seek your truth. Remember all who have died in the peace of Christ, and those whose faith is known to you alone; bring them into the place of eternal joy and light. And grant that we may find our inheritance with the Blessed Virgin Mary, with patriarchs, prophets, apostles, and martyrs, and all the saints who have found favor with you in ages past. We praise you in union with them and give you glory through your Son Jesus Christ Our Lord. Through Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ, all honor and glory are yours, Almighty God and Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, for ever and ever. A M E N .
