    Music for the Nativity

Gaudete, Christus est natus ex Maria Virgine Sung by the choir Medieval Carol

Gaudete, Gaudete! Ergo nostra cantio, Psallat iam in lustro; Benedicat Domino: Salus Regi nostro.

    Rejoice, rejoice! Christ is born of the Virgin Mary, rejoice! It is now the time of grace that we have desired;
Let us sing songs of joy, let us give devotion. God was made man, and nature marvels; The world was renewed by Christ who is King. The closed gate of Ezechiel has been passed through; From where the light

    rises salvation is found. Therefore let our assembly now sing, sing the psalms to purify us;
Let it praise the Lord:
Greetings to our King.

Carol: Angels from the realms of glory Sung by all Regent Square • Hymnal 93

The Shepherd's Carol Sung by the choir Bob Chilcott (b. 1955)

We stood on the hills, Lady, our day’s work done, watching the frosted meadows that winter had won. Silence more lovely than music. There was a star, Lady, shone in the night, larger than Venus it was and bright. Oh, a voice from the sky, Lady, it seemed to us then telling of God being born in the world of men. And so we have come, Lady, our day’s work done, our love, our hopes, ourselves we give to your son.

Hereford Carol Sung by the choir Traditional English carol; arr. Christopher Robinson (b. 1936)

Come all you faithful Christians that dwell here on earth, come celebrate the morning of our dear Savior’s birth. This is the happy morning, this is the blessed morn: to save our souls from ruin, the Son of God was born. Behold the angel Gabriel, in scripture it is said, did with his holy message come to the virgin maid: ‘Hail blest among all women!’, he thus did greet her then, ‘Lo, thou shalt be the mother of the savior of all men.’ Her time being accomplished, she came to Bethlehem, and then was safe delivered of the savior of all men. No princely pomp attended him, his honors were but small; a manger was his cradle, his bed an ox’s stall. Now to him that is ascended let all our praise be; may we his steps then follow and he our pattern be; so when our lives are ended, we all may hear him call: ‘Come, souls, receive the kingdom prepared for you all.’

Carol: O little town of Bethlehem Sung by all St. Louis • Hymnal 79

Donkey Carol Sung by the choir John Rutter (b. 1945)

Donkey riding over the bumpy road, carry Mary all with her heavy load; Follow Joseph, leading you on your way until you find a stable, somewhere to rest and stay. Donkey watching over the Jesus child, see the baby, all with his mother mild; hear the angels singing their song on high: ‘Nowell, nowell, nowell,’ their caroling fills the sky. Donkey resting all in a manger stall, with the oxen worship the Lord of all. Hush, he lies asleep on his bed of hay while Mary sings so sweetly, ‘Lulla, lullalay.’ Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, Christ is born today.

The friendly beasts Sung by the choir English, 12th century; arr. Audrey Snyder

Jesus, our brother, kind and good, was humbly born in a stable rude, and the friendly beasts around him stood; Jesus, our brother, kind and good. I, said the donkey, shaggy and brown, I carried His mother uphill and down, I carried her safely to Bethlehem town; I, said the donkey, shaggy and brown. I, said the cow, all white and red, I gave Him my manger for His bed, I gave Him my hay to pillow His head; I, said the cow, all white and red. I, said the sheep with curly horn, I gave Him my wool for His blanket warm, He wore my coat on Christmas morn; I, said the sheep with curly horn. I, said the dove from the rafters high, I cooed Him to sleep that He should not cry, We cooed Him to sleep, my mate and I; I, said the dove from the rafters high. Thus, every beast by some good spell, in the stable dark was glad to tell of the gift he gave Immanuel, the gift he gave Immanuel.

    THE WORD OF GODI

The people are seated for the Old Testament Lesson, Psalm, and Epistle.

THE OLD TESTAMENT LESSON God comes to restore the people • Isaiah 62:6-12

UPON your walls, O Jerusalem, I have posted sentinels; all day and all night they shall never be silent. You who remind the LORD, take no rest, and give him no rest until he establishes Jerusalem and makes it renowned throughout the earth. The LORD has sworn by his right hand and by his mighty arm: I will not again give your grain to be food for your enemies, and foreigners shall not drink the wine for which you have labored; but those who garner it shall eat it and praise the LORD, and those who gather it shall drink it in my holy courts. Go through, go through the gates, prepare the way for the people; build up, build up the highway, clear it of stones, lift up an ensign over the peoples. The LORD has proclaimed to the end of the earth:

  • 5

Say to daughter Zion, "See, your salvation comes; his reward is with him, and his recompense before him." They shall be called, "The Holy People, The Redeemed of the LORD"; and you shall be called, "Sought Out, A City Not Forsaken."

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

THE GRADUAL PSALM Sung by the choir Dominus regnavit • Psalm 97 Chant: Walter Parratt

1 The LORD is King; let the earth rejoice; * let the multitude of the isles be glad.

2 Clouds and darkness are round about him, * righteousness and justice are the foundations of his throne.

3 A fire goes before him * and burns up his enemies on every side.

4 His lightnings light up the world; * the earth sees it and is afraid. 5 The mountains melt like wax at the presence of the LORD, * at the presence of the Lord of the whole earth.

6 The heavens declare his righteousness, * and all the peoples see his glory.

7 Confounded be all who worship carved images and delight in false gods! * Bow down before him, all you gods.

8 Zion hears and is glad, and the cities of Judah rejoice, * because of your judgments, O LORD.

9 For you are the LORD, most high over all the earth; * you are exalted far above all gods.

10 The LORD loves those who hate evil; * he preserves the lives of his saints and delivers them from the hand of the wicked.

11 Light has sprung up for the righteous, * and joyful gladness for those who are truehearted.

12 Rejoice in the LORD, you righteous, * and give thanks to his holy Name.

THE NEW TESTAMENT LESSON (EPISTLE) Saved through water and the Spirit • Titus 3:4-7

WHEN the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of any works of righteousness that we had done, but according to his mercy, through the water of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit. This Spirit he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

The people stand to sing the Sequence Hymn and remain standing for the Gospel.

SEQUENCE HYMN O come, all ye faithful • Adeste fideles• Hymnal 83 Descant: Willcocks

THE GOSPEL The birth of the Messiah revealed to the shepherds • Luke 2:1-20

The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory to you, Lord Christ.

AND it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Cæsar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.) And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, (because he was of the house and lineage of David,) to be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them; and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us. And they came with haste, and found Mary and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child. And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds. But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ.

The people are seated for the Sermon.

THE SERMON The Rev. Denise Guinta

The people stand for the Nicene Creed and the Prayers of the People.

THE NICENE CREED Said by all

WE believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

    THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

Brothers and sisters, on this most holy night of our Lord’s birth, that we may find peace, joy, and contentment in this holy season, let us pray for ourselves and all those in need of our prayers, saying: Lord, hear our prayer

For the church of Christ, that it may faithfully proclaim the good news of salvation and may care for the needs of God’s people in all corners of the world, we pray to you, O Lord: Lord, hear our prayer.

For peace in our troubled world, that the darkness of war and injustice may be replaced by the light of peace and love, we pray to you, O Lord: Lord, hear our prayer.

For all those in need of our prayers, especially those on our parish prayer list, and for the homeless; the unemployed; the hungry; those who are hospitalized; those who are in prison; and all those for whom this season is one not of joy but of trial and sadness, we pray to you, O Lord. Lord, hear our prayer.

  • 8

For the sick, that their illnesses may be turned into health and their sorrow into rejoicing, we pray to you, O Lord. Lord, hear our prayer.

For those who labor this night on behalf of others: doctors and nurses, police officers and firefighters, gas station attendants, bus and taxi drivers, and all those whose work prevents them from sharing this evening with those they love, we pray to you, O Lord. Lord, hear our prayer.

In thanksgiving we remember the lives of those who have gone before us in the faith. That we, like them, may remain faithful to the end and live forever in the light of your eternal glory, we pray to you, O Lord. Lord, hear our prayer.

Celebrant Mighty God, mercifully hear the prayers of the people you have chosen as your own. Give us zeal in our ministries and joy in our work, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

    CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION

LET us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

Silence may be kept. People may stand or kneel.

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Celebrant Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.

    All stand for the Peace.

    THE PEACE

The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you.

The people greet one another with a sign of God’s peace and then are seated.

    THE OFFERTORY

The people remain seated while their offerings of bread and wine are brought forward and their monetary gifts are received. The collection taken at this liturgy is divided between the maintenance and mission of Trinity Episcopal Church and the charitable causes we support. We are grateful for your generous giving.

OFFERTORY ANTHEM A maiden most gentle • French tune; arr. Andrew Carter (b. 1939)

A maiden most gentle and tender we sing: of Mary the mother of Jesus our King. Ave, ave, ave Maria, Ave, ave, ave Maria. How blessed is the birth of her heavenly child, who came to redeem us in Mary so mild. Ave, ave, ave Maria, Ave, ave, ave Maria. The Archangel Gabriel foretold by his call the Lord of creation, and Savior of all. Ave, ave, ave Maria, Ave, ave, ave Maria. Three Kings came to worship with gifts rich and rare, and marveled in awe at the babe in her care. Ave, ave, ave Maria, Ave, ave, ave Maria. Rejoice and be glad at this Christmas we pray; sing praise to the Savior, sing endless ‘Ave.’ Ave, ave, ave Maria, Ave, ave, ave Maria.

The people stand to sing the Presentation Hymn and remain standing through the Sanctus & Benedictus.

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING – EUCHARISTIC PRAYER A The Book of Common Prayer, p. 361

IT is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.

Because you gave Jesus Christ, your only Son, to be born for us; who by the mighty power of the Holy Spirit, was made perfect Man of the flesh of the Virgin Mary his mother; so that we might be delivered from the bondage of sin, and receive power to become your children.

THEREFORE we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

SANCTUS & BENEDICTUS Sung by all Richard Proulx • Hymnal S 125

The people may kneel or remain standing. The presider continues with the Eucharistic Prayer. BCP p. 362

HOLY and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all.

He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world.

On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died.

Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts.

  • 11

Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom.

All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever.
