Office of the Director of Education

March 2005 As a former Music teacher at Neil McNeil High School, it is a great pleasure for me to welcome all the participants to the Toronto Catholic District School Board’s Music Education Festival. Shakespeare wrote that the people who have no music in their souls are fit for ‘treasons stratagems and spoils.’ The Bard may have been a little harsh in his assessment but keen in his observation that music is important to the human spirit. Our Festival celebrates the music learning that goes on in our classrooms all year long. It speaks to the hours of patient dedication and practice of teacher and student. It speaks of the vision of a school administrator who sees the value of Music as an instrument of culture, civility and human growth. It speaks of hours of disciplined rehearsal. It speaks of working together to achieve a harmonious whole. It speaks of all that is good and beautiful in Catholic education. In today’s educational climate, it has become increasingly important to stress the value of the Arts in education. Music and the other Arts develop the brain and assist students in appreciating the results of perseverance and hard work. Music lifts the human spirit, expresses culture and history, gives us enjoyment and stays with us a lifetime. Music is the soul speaking without words. It is the song of the universe that lifts our hearts and minds to God. May I express my thanks and congratulations to all of you, students and teach-ers, who are participating in this year’s Festival.

If Music be the food of love, play on! Twelfth Night 1:1

Psalm 150 With all creatures, we sing our praise to God. Alleluia

Praise God in God’s holy place

Praise God in God’s mighty heaven

Praise God for God’s powerful deeds

Praise God’s surpassing greatness.

O praise God with the sound of trumpet

Praise God with lute and harp

Praise God with timbrel and dance

Praise God with strings and pipes.

O praise God with resounding cymbals

Praise God with clashing of cymbals

Let everything that lives and that breathes

give praise to the Lord.

Alleluia

OBJECTIVES

To promote a love for choral and instrumental music. To promote excellence in choral and instrumental performance. To provide an opportunity for children to learn from other chil-dren. To expose teachers and students to good choral and instrumental repertoire. To provide an opportunity to exchange choral and instrumental ideas. To provide positive and constructive feedback to students and teachers by means of adjudication. To provide an opportunity to involve multiple age and staff levels. To make choral and instrumental festivals important events. To develop a sense of community in school, between schools and outside school through singing and playing.

STRUCTURE The music education festival is a non-competitive, positive and constructive music event. Several performing groups will gather for a session in either the morning or the afternoon. They will perform for each other and an adjudicator. Each choir will sing one selection from the list, and another selection of their own choice. Instrumental groups must perform two selections: one from the list provided, one own choice (with the exception of CLASS 604, 704, 804, 904). All conductors should consider variety in selections. Their adjudicator will verbally comment on the overall performance and perhaps work with the whole group on one or two items; the adjudicator will also provide a written commentary for each group and give it to the conductor.
