Icheon-dong Maaeyeoraeipsang (The Stone Buddha Statue) This statue stands at the foot of Mt. Taehwasan in Icheon-dong, to the north of Andong-city. A ten-meter tall image of Buddha was carved into the granite cliff with a separately sculptured head on top during the Goryeo Period (918- 1392). This is considered to be a sacred place where the spirits of the mountain gods are integrated with that if Buddha, thus enhancing the power of the site to make wishes come true. The mask is used for special mask dance. Beopheungsaji Seven-Story Brick Pagoda

This pagoda from the Unified Silla Dynasty(668-918) is the largestand the oldest brick pagoda in Korea. It has seventeen meter talland its base bears engraved symbolic figures, Buddha gods, andtwelve gods of the earth.

Icheon-dong Maaeyeoraeipsang

(The Stone Buddha Statue) This statue stands at the foot of Mt.Taehwasan in Icheon-dong, to the north of Andong-city. A ten-metertall image of Buddha was carved into the granite cliff with aseparately sculptured head on top during the Goryeo Period (918-1392). This is considered to be a sacred place where the spirits of themountain gods are integrated with that if Buddha, thus enhancing thepower of the site to make wishes come true. Jebiwon, where thisstatue stands, was a mecca of local folk religion.

Andong MackerelVisitors, taking note of the distance of the city from the east sea, might besurprised to know that some of the best mackerel in Korean can be foundin Andong. In the old days, most people in Andong had to bring fish fromthe sea, and it took several days for a fish peddler to make the journey. Inorder to keep the fish fresh, salt was put on the mackerel.Meals served with the mackerel can be found at the restaurants inAndong dam and other tourist attractions.

Andong ChickenAndong Jjimdak is boiled chicken with vegetables and soy sauce. It isnutritious and low in calories. Large pieces of potato, spinach and greenonion are combined with chicken pieces and bean thread noodles. Thischicken is simmered over low heat, Sesame seeds and red chile are thenadded for a deep flavor. This is a favorite dish in Korea.

Andong Heot Jesabab (Ancestor Worship Meal) The people of Andong prepared bibimbap(boiled rice mixed with assortedingredients) using the same ingredients used for traditional ancestor worshipceremony, even for their everyday meals. It is served with a variety ofvegetables, sanjeok(meat and vegetable broiled on a skewer) and soup.Tourist can have this food at the restaurants in Andong Dam and Hahoevillage.

Andong BeefThis juicy, high-quality beef comes from cattle that are raised in theunpolluted countryside that surrounds Andong. Its taste is so highly prizedand unique that it is said that people who eat Andong beef at least once,will never forget the taste.

Andong Sikhye(Sweet and ginger taste beverage)One of the typical favorite winter beverage in Korea is AndongSikhye, a sweet and refreshing drink made from fermented rice.Andong sikhye is different from the common sikhye because itcontains hot pepper flour, ginger and radish. The drink is awonderful way to clean the palate after eating.

Lee Hwang(Toegye)

Lee Hwang (1501~70), known more

commonly by his penname, Toegye, was

one of Korea s most respected neo-

Confucian scholars. Lee ardently studied

neo-Confucianism and developed it

further based on his theory of gyeong, or

mindfulness. He passed the national

government test at the age of 34 and

served in high position in the central

government in the capital. After his

service, he returned to his hometown and

built Dosan in order to spread the

teachings of Confucius.

Hahoe World Mask MuseumThis museum, located near Hahoe Village, displaysmaks from both Korea and it is other countries, andit is a wonderful place to learn about the history andculture of the unique history and tradition of masks.

JingbirokThis book was written by Ryu Seong-ryong(1542~1607), a scholar andhigh ranking official, during the Japanese invasion of 1592~1598. Thebook records the event during the war, such as national resistanceagainst the Japanese invaders, rescue of Joseon by the Chinese MingDynasty, and the progress of battles of the navy. The title 'Jingbi' means'precaution saves later troubles'. This is important historical material forthe study of the Japanese invasion of 1592-98.

Mansongjieong Pine Tree ForestThis pine forest was created by Ryu Un-ryong(Gyeom’am)when he was young to complement weak Jiki or landenergy of the western part of the village in accordance withthe teachings of geomancy. Besides, this is the site whereseon Seonyu-Julbul-Nori , a favorite game of the Hahoeliterati, was held each year, in addition to the sites atBuyongdae and the sand beach of Nakdong River.

Yangjin Residence (Treasure No.306)

This is the head house of the Pungsan line of the Ryufamily (a noted for its long line of Confucianscholars)and it is the oldest house among thenoblemen's houses in Hahoe.This manor excellentlypreserves the style of architecture typical of earlyJoseon Dynasty upper-class homes, which is quite rarein Korea.

Chunghyo ResidenceThis is the head house of Ryu Seong-ryong,aprominent politician and the wartime prime ministerduring the Imjin war. Ryu Seong-ryong's 14thdescendent and the housekeeper for the 13thdescendent live in this house and preserve itstradition.

Buyongdae Cliff

This a 64m high cliff across the river from Mansong-jeong pine tree Forest.A gorgeous view of Hahoe Village can be seen fromthe top of the cliff.

Dosan Confucion AcademyThis is the oldest building at Dosan Academy.Its shape and size is quite simple and small,allowingit harmonize well with nature.

Buit by Ryu Do-Seong, aprovincial governor in1862, it has an -structured main buil-ding, a family shrine,servant quarters andliving quarters.

Jeongyodang LectureThis was used as a main lecture hall.A tablet from King Seonjo (1552-1608) that ackno-wledges the efforts of the Dosan Confucian Academyhangs on the wall.

Sangdeoksa Shrine(Treasure No.211)

This shrine contains the memorial tablets of LeeHwang and Mok, one of Lee's disciples. Every February and August, memorial ceremoniesare held to honor the mand their teachings.

Gwangmyeongsil LibraryThese Libraries held over 5000books, includingselected works by Lee Hwang.However,for reasons of preservation,the books weremoved to the Korean Studies Advancement Centerwhich is located about 5km from the library.

Daeungjeon Hall

In the Joseon Dynasty,most government exami-nations were held in Seoul, the capital of Korea. Butin 1792,King Jeongjo(r.1776-1800)orderd certainexams to be held here at Dosan to commemorize LeeHwang's achievement.Sisadan was moved from its former location to heredue to the construction of Andong Dam.

Daeungjeon Hall is a classic,representative structure of the earlyJoseon Dynasty.The hall was named after a famoushero. Daeung,who helped out ofdifficulties.

Yeongsanam Hall

Yeongsanam Hall looks like a smallgarden and served as a smallbedch-amber for monks.This place is now used for templestay programs.

Geuknakjeon Hall (National Treasure No.15)

The well-pressrved GeuknakjeonHall is the oldest wooden buiding inKorea over 600 years and is knownfor its firm pillars and modestinterior furnishings.

Cheondeung Cave

In English,chen mean "angle" anddeung means "Light".Legend goes that a monk namedNeungin was studying Buddhistscriptures alone in this cave and anangle,moved by his strong will tostudy, provided a light for him.
