The holidays are a great time to visit Fredericksburg’s Historic District and the Fredericksburg Area Museum & Cultural Center (FAMCC) wants to give you even more reasons to come into town.

Looking for something interesting to do with holiday guests? Our newest exhibi-tion, Quilt National ’13 opens December 2. The exhibition features 26 art quilts from artists around the country and as far away as Germany, Switzerland, and the Netherlands. It will change the way you think about “quilts.”

As part of the Main Street Initiative, the Museum—along with over 60 stores—will be open until 8 pm on December 12; look for yellow flags at participating businesses. Bring the kids, because Santa will be in The Museum Store from 6 pm to 8 pm!

The FAMCC, along with a number of other community groups, will be host-ing the Annual Christmas Tree Lighting Program at Hurkamp Park again this year. Bundle up and stay for fun activities designed to engage the whole family from crafts, to music, and holiday storytelling.

If you’re in the mood for some local his-tory, plan on attending one of our many lecture programs (see calendar opposite for dates and topics).

There’s always something new and interesting at the Museum, so plan on spending some of your holiday vacation with us. We here at the FAMCC, wish you and yours a historic holiday season!

About Town About Townfamcc.org famcc.org

The FAMCC recently caught up with Ann Glave of Fredericksburg Main Street to find out about the new initiative that is painting the downtown in yellow!

Ann, what is the new Fredericks-burg Main Street holiday initiative all about? Open Late Fridays is the newest Holiday Initiative. A yellow flag marks most of the businesses that are participating. There are a few with blue suction flags on the win-dows as well. In addition, Main Street has scheduled a few Special Treats to encour-age visitors to explore Downtown Freder-icksburg on Fridays. There are free visits to historic sites or musical activities occurring downtown. The FAMCC’s Catherine W. Jones McKann's Center is a Special Treats on Friday, December 12 from 5 to 8 pm. Wow! So how many businesses are participating and how long will the program run?Sixty businesses have committed to being open at least to 8 pm on the Fridays lead-ing up to Christmas. The program opens on November 7 and will continue for the remaining 6 Fridays. There are several more businesses coming online in December. What is your ultimate goal for the new Fredericksburg Main Street Holi-day Initiative? The long term goal would be that the downtown will be known for being open late on Fridays and possibly another day or two. According to National Main Street, it takes at least a 2-year commitment to change perceptions and get consistent

commitment from the businesses. A vibrant downtown needs to have more than restaurants open after 6 pm. In Janu-ary, there will be a community meeting to discuss what worked and what needs improvement in this pilot program.

How might FAMCC members support this program?By supporting the merchants that are open late and by visiting the Special Treats. Shop and tell the businesses how much you sup-port what they are doing. Is there any other information that our readers should know about this program or about Fredericksburg Main Street?

Happy Holidays from Fredericksburg Main Street!

Main Street has recently released a Gift Card program with 5 designs by local art-ists. They are available for sale at the Visitor Center and LibertyTown Arts Workshop. In person, you can purchase $25, $50 and $100 cards. Online you can customize the card, design and amount. We are also actively supporting Small Busi-ness Saturday on November 29. Our Early Bird Riser Promotion from 8 to 10 am that morning was awarded the AMEX Small Business Neighborhood Champion Award. Over 40 businesses will be offering a special incentive during 8 to 10 am. VA Deli, Vivify, and Eileen's will be open for breakfast plus the Economic Development and Tourism Office will have free coffee and pastries at 8 am at the Visitor Center and in front of Raven Hi Fi to encourage the early visitors! Look for red carpets and blue balloons in front of participating stores.

It's a busy season downtown. Visit Main Street's website at www.freder-icksburgmainstreet.org for upcoming activities and their Facebook page for Fredericksburg downtown.

New Exhibition: Quilt National 2013!

Exhibitions famcc.org

This international juried competition—now in its eighteenth year—originates at The Dairy Barn Arts Center in Athens, Ohio. Attracting fiber artists from across the country and around the world, the exhibition is a platform for exploring the art of quiltmaking updated for the 21st century. One reviewer called the biannual exhibition the “Oscars of the Art Quilting world.” The Dairy Barn Arts Center describes the works in the exhibition in these terms:

The works in a Quilt National exhibit display a reverence for the lessons taught by the makers of the heritage quilts. Many of the works hold fast to the traditional methods of piecing and patching. At the same time, however, the Quilt National artist is intrigued by the challenge of expanding the boundaries of traditional quiltmaking by utilizing the newest materi-als and technologies. These innovative works generate strong emotional responses in the viewer while at the same

time fulfilling the creative need of the artist to make a totally individual statement.

With more than two dozen works of contemporary fiber artists working in thirteen states and three European countries, this exhibition is a visual and emotional feast that will change how you think about “quilts” forever.

Quilt National ‘13 opens to the public December 2, 2014. An opening reception will be held on December 5 from 5 pm -7 pm. This is a members only event. Please send your RSVP to [email protected].

Quilt National ‘13 is made possible in part by A Fredericksburg Economic Develop-ment Authority JumpstArt! grant.

Thanks to the generosity of Thom and Tri-cia Smelter, a pastel portrait of John Chew, Jr. (1753-1806) has found its way “home” to Fredericksburg. This newest acquisition to the FAMCC’s collection depicts Chew during the time he served as Clerk of the Court of Fredericksburg between 1787 – 1806. (An interesting side note: Chew men held this position for 99 years and 11 days, each one succeeded by his son in direct line until 1886.)

During the Revolutionary War, Chew was a Lieutenant in the Spotsylvania Militia. Dur-ing the Battle of Camden in South Carolina in 1780, he was wounded and eventu-ally taken prisoner. When he was finally released, he wrote his wife from Richmond asking her to make arrangements for his transportation back to Fredericksburg. In the letter he notes “The wounds I rec’d in the action of the 16th August last are all well except my arm which is almost cured.” What he failed to mention was that his left arm had been amputated. The unknown portrait artist deftly conceals this war wound by depicting Chew turned slightly to the left. The wound eventually earned Chew a pension of $48 per year for life.

Portraits were the most popular type of painting in Colonial America. A portrait such as this would have typically hung in the first floor parlor or, in a larger house, the second floor ballroom. This particular portrait once hung in a house on Sunken Road. It was passed down within the family and eventually ended up in Roanoke before entering the Museum’s collection.

Volunteers famcc.org

Meet a few of ourDedicated Volunteers!

Christine Clements, originally from Jacksonville, Florida, studied Historic Preservation and Museum Studies at the University of Mary Washington. She did her senior internship at the FAMCC, assisting the Director of Collections & Exhibitions, Christopher Uebelhor, with exhibits, collections, and many other tasks. Since then she has continued to volunteer regularly because working in museums, particularly collections work, is her passion.

“The Fredericksburg Area Museum is such an interesting and vibrant place, full of wonderful people. I love helping out and going to all the special events.”—Christine

Greg graduated in 1971 from West Liberty University with a B.A. in both Art and Eng-lish. He worked as the Director of Visual Arts and Publishing for the Department of Defense at Ft. Belvoir until retiring in 2003. Rita graduated from James Madison University in 1977 with a B. S. in Library Science. She received her M. Ed. in 1981 and worked 30 years as a school librarian until retiring in 2007.

“We both love reading, travel, antiques, and history. We have volunteered at Ken-more, Historic Fredericksburg Foundation, and the Central Rappahannock Regional Library. Volunteering at FAMCC gives us an opportunity to meet people with similar interests —history, art, antiques. The flex-ible schedule allows us to choose our own hours. It’s fun!”—Rita

Christine Clements

The FAMCC is looking to expand its team of excellent volunteers and we want you! Volunteers are a crucial component in fulfilling the Museum’s mission of sharing the story of our region with both its residents and visitors. Not only is volunteer-ing a great way to support the Museum, it is an opportunity to gain valuable insights and experiences. As a volunteer, you open the doors for the public to experience and learn the story of Fredericksburg in many unique ways: from gallery tours to special events, volunteers are integral to forging the relationship between the Museum and the community.

Volunteering at the FAMCC is a differ-ent opportunity for different people. For students, it is a chance to gain real world experiences that will guide them into the job market upon graduation. For oth-

ers, it is a love of history, art, and culture which drives them to volunteer. For some volunteering is also an opportunity to give back to the community while learning more about its rich heritage. Currently, our biggest need is for volunteers to run the admissions desks, The Museum Store, and welcome visitors into the Museum. Without the help and dedication of these volunteers, we could not open our doors to the public each day. Other opportuni-ties include assisting the staff in planning and implementing our special events, fundraisers, and education programs.

Meet Our Interns

Shelby Pagan

The FAMCC Internship Program pro-vides unique opportunities for students interested in the museum field and related professions. Each internship provides hands-on, project-based experience. This fall, we welcomed three new interns to the Special Events, Membership, and Education departments.

Shelby is a George Mason alumna, and received her B.A. in Anthropology. She has a passion for the study of culture as well as the soul of the individual, which has led her to seek a Ph.D in Trauma Psychology. She hopes to work closely with veterans and active duty members of the military.

“FAMCC’s dedication to the historical integrity of the very town I grew up in inspires me to also pursue a field that will be vehemently fulfilling. I hope my time at the FAMCC will strengthen the commu-nity’s awareness [of the Museum] and participation as well as promote the dissemination of knowledge for genera-tions to come.” —Shelby

Happy Holidays from The Museum Store

Lorie McCown, River Convergence

This year, The Museum Store staff has been busy preparing for a holiday season like no other. We are proud to offer a variety of fine art quality giclee prints of original paintings by our current Com-munity Artist Jack Darling. Rich in color and texture, these giclees are perfect for framing, and are worthwhile additions to any art collection. We also carry original works by many of the North Windsor Artists currently featured in our Town Hall’s Community Artist Series exhibit. In honor of our newest exhibition, Quilt National ’13 opening on December 2, we are selling beautiful fiber art by local quilt artist Lorie McCown. Lorie will bring some of her quilts and wonderful fiber art for display and for sale to the Breakfast with the Curator program on Tuesday, December 9, 2014.

New to our art card collection are the whimsical designs of local artist Stacy Gaglio. Gaglio’s renderings of iconic Fredericksburg sites are also suitable for framing, as are the popular prints of Carl’s Ice Cream, the railroad bridge over the Rappahannock, and other Freder-icksburg scenes by Casey Shaw. Look for Casey’s charming folk art Christmas cards, perfect for a traditional Christmas themed gift.

Throughout the store, we have elegant handmade ladies’ hats by three different artists, and a variety of scarves, gloves, bags and jewelry to wear with them, perfect for that fashionable lady on your

Christmas list. Children love the imagina-tive “Creativity Sets” by local design team “ZOLO,” which are fun and challenging for ages 5 and up.

And don’t miss out on an evening of holi-day fun as only Santa Claus can serve up with Santa in the Store. This year Santa will visit us from 6 to 8 pm on Friday, Decem-ber 12. Come ready to talk with Santa and listen to holiday stories. Parents, be sure to bring your camera to capture wonderful holiday memories.

After your visit with Santa, check out the galleries of The Catherine W. Jones McKann Center which will be open that evening from 5 pm until 8 pm, free of charge. ‘Till then, we wish you the hap-piest of holiday seasons, and hope to see you at The Museum Store.
