A quick visit, in 2013, to some of the portuguese art masterpieces of the 19th century.
The 18th century building where the Museum is installed was the residence and jewelry factory of a rich family of Porto. In 1809 it was occupied as troop headquarters by general Soult during the French invasions, then also by Wellington after the occupiers’ retreat.
In 1861 King D. Pedro V made it a Royal Palace for the Court’s lodging when visiting the town.
After the Republic was established, the state took possession of the palace in 1939 to install the art collections dispersed in the existing small museums.
