Rethinking the “Mystery” of Easter Island Terry Hunt, professor of anthropology and dean of the Robert D. Clark Honors College, University of Oregon

Easter Island, or Rapa Nui, is known for its giant statues—and for its stark lessons about human-induced environmental catastrophe. Drawing on a decade of groundbreaking research, Terry Hunt paints a surprising picture of the island’s deep past and the remarkable culture that flourished there.

Draw fabulous fish, shadowy sharks, and dashing dinosaurs with renowned Alaska artist Ray Troll. VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT Mary SmithMary likes talking to people—and that’s nothing new. Back in her elementary school days, she was regularly sent to the principal’s office for talking too much in class. But here at the museum, where Mary volunteers as an exhibit hall interpreter, her enthusiasm never gets her into trouble. She’s got a wealth of stories to share with visitors about Oregon’s natural and cultural history, and she gives exciting, inspiring tours at the museum each week.

A retired educator, Mary especially enjoys leading K–12 groups through the exhibit halls. “It’s a cool opportunity because I still get to teach, but in a completely different, informal setting,” she says. “It’s one of the many reasons I love volunteering here.”

School’s not in session, so head to the museum for an exciting half-day science adventure! Students in grades three through five will think like scientists, get up close and personal with our new Buzz Saw Sharks exhibit, and explore the world of sharks through a variety of fun activities.

Environmental Education Workshop for Nonformal EducatorsMonday, September 14 9:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m.

This one-day workshop will introduce participants to the newest publication in the National Project for Excellence in Environmental Education series. Participants will work in small groups to identify ways to improve environmental education programs. Admission is $40 per person; includes lunch and materials. Preregistration is required. Our programs emphasize fun, inquiry-based learning in science and social studies. Your students can explore Oregon’s geology, archaeology, and natural history through a variety of hands-on activities. All programs are aligned with Oregon and national standards.
