PHOTOGRAPHS BY TIMOTHY GREENFIELD-SANDERS

OCTOBER 4 — DECEMBER 30, 2018

The Boomer List: Photographs by Timothy Greenfield-Sanders, developed by the Newseum in collaboration with AARP, is an exhibition of 19 large-

format portraits of some of the most fascinating members of the influential baby boom generation — one born each year of the baby boom, from 1946 to 1964 — taken by renowned American photographer Timothy Greenfield-Sanders.

At this exhibition, visitors will gain insight into the boomer generation through interviews and portraits that focus on exceptional achievement, struggle and identity, telling the story of extraordinary Americans and the history they lived through and often created.

The exhibition also includes an original Newseum-produced film featuring the photographer’s stories about the project. A large touch-screen monitor allows visitors to explore dozens of candid behind-the-scenes images and videos of the photo shoots and a scent station offers memorable aromas familiar to the baby boom generation.

Award-winning photographer and filmmaker Timothy Greenfield-Sanders (“The Black List,” “The Latino List” and “The Out List”) chose as his subjects boomers who reflect the depth, diversity and talent of their generation, including Vietnam veteran and author Tim O’Brien, actor Samuel L. Jackson, fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger, and journalist Maria Shiver.

In addition to the 19 portraits, a three-panel timeline features some of the top news events and pop culture moments that defined the baby boom generation, with images of memorable news magazines and photos of iconic objects from the period. Guests can add their own memories at a comment station.

1955: Maria Shriver • Journalist“Kids used to say, ‘I don’t really want to come over to your house because your mother is going to make me volunteer, and we’re going to have to live on an Indian reservation or go to Africa.’ ”

“The Boomer List: Photographs by Timothy Greenfield-Sanders” was developed by the Newseum in collaboration with AARP. The Newseum, an interactive museum of news, is located in Washington, D.C. (newsuem.org). AARP is the exclusive sponsor of “The Boomer List: Photographs by Timothy Greenfield-Sanders.”

SPECIAL EXHIBITIONS

Japanese Woodblock Prints: Selections from the Haggin Museum Collection

A special exhibition of Japanese woodblock prints from the Haggin Museum’s collection, featuring interpretive content by Dr. John

Listopad, will be on display October 4, 2018 through January 2, 2019. This selection of more than 30 prints, known as ukiyo-e or “pictures of the floating world,” showcases noted artists such as Hiroshige, Kunisada, Kuniyoshi, Toyokuni and Utamaro.

Traditionally, woodblock prints have been a popular art form for the masses, illustrating stories of lovers and courtesans from the pleasure quarters, popular kabuki theatre actors and their roles, great heroes in battle, parodies of classical literature and history, as well as landscapes depicting famous places and views.

Images above from left to right: Spring Rain-Gokokuji, Hasui, 1932; Night View of Saruwaka Street, Hiroshige, Ando, 1856; The Actor Hataakey Ama Jiro Shigetada, Kunisada, c. 1786-1865

Arturo Vera has spent nearly 40 years mastering the art of professional photography. Soon after earning his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Academy of Art in San Francisco,

Vera embarked upon his creative calling with the motto, “Never look at light as an obstacle, but rather as a beautiful challenge.”

Throughout his career, Arturo’s subject matter has varied from wedding photography to the indigenous people of the tribe. His works have been seen from galleries to magazine covers and his many honors include being part of the inaugural exhibition at the Grand Theater Center for the Arts.

Since relocating to Stockton in 2001, he has compiled a considerable portfolio. The majority of the images that comprise his portfolio document Stockton and the surrounding beauty we all

sometimes take for granted. Many of these images have been featured in well attended exhibitions such as “Fog in Stockton,” “Murals in Stockton,” and “Floral and Photosynthesis – A Light Reaction.”

UPCOMING EXHIBITIONSMICHAEL DOLAS: CAPTURING THE CHARACTER OF HIS COUNTRYJANUARY 17 - FEBRUARY 24, 2019

MODERN MASTERS: TWENTIETH CENTURY PRINTSJANUARY 17 - FEBRUARY 24, 2019

This engaging exhibition features thirty prints by modern artists from the 1920s through the early twenty-first century and is drawn from the Reading Public Museum’s collection. Early modernist such as Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso, join

Surrealists Roberto Matta, Salvador Dali, and Pop artist Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and Keith Haring in this fascinating look at works on paper from the twentieth century. Other artists featured in the show include Sam Francis, Donald Judd, Robert Rauschenberg, Mel Ramos, Raphael Soyer, Sonia Delaunay, François Gilot, Alex Katz, and Jim Dine.

When Michael Dolas (1912-2010) passed away just shy of his 98th birthday, he was one of the last of the artists from the Golden Age of American Illustration. A friend of iconic artists of that era such as J.C. Leyendecker and Norman Rockwell, Dolas began his career in the 1930s painting illustrations for numerous national magazines. During WWII, he served as a combat photographer in the Pacific. Dolas returned to New York following the war and in addition to his resuming his magazine work, he began creating advertising art for a host of nationally-known companies. This exhibition features approximately 40 of the artist’s magazine and advertising illustrations, as well as Dolas’ collection of 10 original SATURDAY EVENING POST covers by J.C. Leyendecker.
