Michael Cheval Michael Cheval is the world’s leading contemporary artist, specializing in Absurdist paint-ings, drawings and portraits. In his definition, absurdity is an inverted side or reality, areverse side o logic. It does not emerge rom the dreams o surrealists, or the work o sub-consciousness. It is a game o imagination, where all ties are careully chosen to construct aliterary plot. Any one o Cheval’s paintings is a map o his journey into illusion. His work isofen metaphorical and requires a sharp eye to decipher the ofen hidden allusions.Born in 1966 in Kotelnikovo, a small town o southern Russia, Cheval developed passion orart in his early childhood. When his amily moved to Germany in 1980, the West Europeanculture made a great impression on the young artist. In 1986, he moved to urkmenistan and

graduated rom Ashgabad school o Fine Art. Absorbing Eastern philosophy and the charac-ter o Central Asia, he began working as an independent proessional artist, shaping his styleand surrealistic direction. His decision to immigrate in 1997 to USA began a new epoch orthe artist. He returned to the Western culture that greatly inspired him in his German youth,but now he brought his own experience, his philosophy, and vision.In 1998, Cheval becamea member o the prestigious New York’s National Arts Club where he was distinguished withthe Exhibition Committee Award in 2000. Alexandra ManWho are you Alexandra?

I was born and raised in Armenia. Since a very young age my parents engaged me in variousafer school programs, but at the age o 11 I urged them to take me to an art school. Afer artschool I graduated rom Fine Art College, and later rom State Pedagogical University where Imajored in eaching Fine Arts. When we immigrated in 1990 to the US, I realized that it’s go-ing to be very hard or an artist to earn a living, so I decided to graduate rom a Fashion De-sign school. Afer working or many years as a Fashion Designer at some point in my career Ihad to learn graphic design and stylized abrics and do screen prints, so I had to take courses

at UCLA, and some additional private classes in graphic design.

Later when I became really proficient in graphic design and various graphic applications Istarted reelancing or different Entertainment Agencies and designed movie posters.Currently I reelance or the ashion industry and paint ull time.

When did you realize that you are an artist?

I had a very beautiul childhood, ull o ond memories, so when I started drawing it was just

a conscious decision. I realized that I had a need o being creative, and the only way I couldully express mysel, and could control my ideas, was through drawing or painting.

Could you tell me some more about your paintings?

I ocus on combining traditional oil painting techniques with surrealist symbolism to com-municate the immediate and lasting impact o technological innovations on the human bodyand psyche.One recurring moti in my paintings ofen appears as the eminine orm bearing the burdens

o worldly grie and mistakes on her body bowing in resignation to a seemingly inevitableate: the acquiescence o the corporeal state to the encroaching dominance o modern tech-nologies conjoining itsel like an apathetic demon o silicon and circuitry cursing more thanulfilling promises o beauty and comort.

ell me about your inspiration...where is it coming from?

My main inspirations are the models I work with. Every time I draw or paint a model a seriescomes up in my head. I start making up stories and narratives, and then quickly sketch out inthe pad.

What is your creative process? Which techniques you utilize?

Tinking through, and preparing the compositions or my paintings, is an elaborate pro-cess, and sometimes it takes me months to start a painting. I always think o a series, andstart doing several pieces to each series. I saw and make most o the costumes you see inmy paintings. Beore starting a series, I sketch out my ideas, and have a solid understanding

o images I want to depict, and what models I’m going to hire, or what kind o clothing Ineed to make, or rent or my heroes. My compositions take weeks, and sometimes monthsto finish.I always start with Imprimatura, meaning an initial stain o color in raw umber. It providesme with evenly toned ground. Tis is the way Renaissance artists worked. Ten I startdrawing my objects by paying a very close attention to the accuracy o my drawing, thenafer the drawing layer is dry, I build the under-painting layer. Afer I let these two layerscompletely dry I start painting successive layers o colors giving each layer time to dry be-ore applying the next coat o paint. My final stages are glazes, which are semi-transparent

layers.

What’s the best and worst parts of being an artist in today’s world?

Te best part is the cornucopia o inormation and inspirational resources, and worst partis the ast pasted lie, too many distractions and enormous competition.

What is the contrast between the intent of your art and the perception of it?

So ar I have not elt any contrast between the intent o my and the perception o it.

What aspiration as an artist is most important to you?

Te best quality o work.

What has been your most exciting moment as an artist?

My first solo exhibition.

Where do you see yourself in let’s say...10 years?

I I’m still healthy and alive …… Painting, painting, painting………

Marcela BolivaPlease tell me who is Marcela...

Marcela is a photo-illustrator with a bachelors degree in graphic design and has been cuttingand pasting photos to transorm them or eight years now.

Why do you create and what is the purpose of your art?

Tat’s a big philosophical question! I eel I’ve always had that urge within me, to create romnothing, something new, something mine and I do it with images, since I’m not that good in

expressing mysel through words.

Where is your inspiration coming from?

From eelings, time, nature, stories and art itsel.

Tere is a gentle touch of gothic in the most of your creations, as well as mythology and even

religion...can you tell us more about that?

I find mysel recurring into dark subjects more than I’d like it to be, but or me is to dive andlurk into the hidden side o everything and make it beautiul and evident or once.

Besides Adobe Photoshop, are there any other programs you are using?

I only use Photoshop, my camera and a scanner.

Do you think that a modern way of creating is giving an artist more freedom than classicaltechniques?

Yes indeed, that in the other hand is sometimes a problem when you can’t commit to the re-sult o one picture. You have so many possibilities… it can be overwhelming when you’re notsure o what you want. But is a perect tool to experiment!

How do you see yourself and your art in the future?

Hopeully working on big projects and collaborating with creative people.

Arsen KurbanoArsen Kurbanov was born in Makhachkala, republic o Dagestan, in the USSR. His motherand ather were artists as is his brother. In 1988, Kurbanov completed his education at theJamal Dagestan Art College, receiving a red diploma o scholastic excellence. He was im-mediately accepted into one o the most prestigious art academies in the world – the RepinInstitute o the St. Petersburg Academy o Art. Afer graduating in 1994, Kurbanov exhibitedhis final artwork to the graduation committee and was accepted into the “Union o RussianArtists.”Kurbanov combines the techniques o the Old Masters (particularly Pieter de Hooch andVermeer) with a contemporary, personal sense o imagery. Biblical and historical reerences

appear alongside modern elements in his paintings, introducing a eeling o mystery. WhileKurbanov’s portraits represent precise, almost photographic likenesses o his sitters, they arealso created as compositions in their own right.Since graduation, Kurbanov has been painting in Russia and abroad. He has participated inArtists’ Union exhibitions in Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Makhachkala. His work has alsobeen exhibited in Germany, the United States, China, Holland, Norway and Finland. “My name is Yuriy Ratush. I live in Ukraine. I attended Art School rom 1978 till 1985. From1984 till 1998, I ounded, together with other artists, the Experimental Creative Laboratory. Carmen Gonzal

Carmen Gonzalez is a photographer rom Spanish origins currently living in Holland. Mostlyknown or her sel portraits, Carmen sees hersel more as a visual artist than a photogra-pher. Her work is too versatile to be be pigeonholed. “I use my camera like a painter usesbrushes and canvas to create art; the photo is just the beginning” she states. Using hersel as themain subject in her photography is, according to Gonzalez, the ultimate orm o sel-expres-sion. “I see mysel become a sort o personification o something that once was an abstract in my antasy and it gives me the perception that I have succeeded to capture my existence on various

levels”.In 2004, she started taking photos with a small digital compact camera and uploaded themon different photo sharing sites where she discovered that the public loved her work. Sevenyears later, the crappy camera has been replaced with a Canon EOS 5D mark II and thoughprimarily sel-taught, she ollowed photography training and is now a certified photographer.

She loves to touch people with her work, to inspire them, to move them, and evoke emo-tion. Hence, the arts sector has her preerence though she is aware o the difficulty to get aoothold in it. ”Tere are too many damn good artists in the world. Sometimes it amazes me

It is a tough business where you have to constantly network and work really hard to stay in the picture so that people won’t orget about you. A good business instinct is an indispensable assetbut alas; this ofen does not go hand in hand with having a creative mind.” Luckily Carmenwas able to show her work through a number o exhibitions in the Netherlands and Belgiumand through collaboration with various artists rom different art disciplines. She worked withpainters, multimedia artists, and she did a show with a musical perormer and a perormance

poet rom South Arica. “It was an explosion o artistry!” She says enthusiastically, ”What a great experience to be able to melt the passions together into one spectacular scene!” Carmenhopes that in the uture she will be given the opportunity to work again with talented art-ists. Meanwhile regional television discovered Carmen’s mystical world and made a back-ground documentary about her. She also has had publications in several magazines, art booksand newspapers including Te Sunday imes in the United Kingdom.

Currently Carmen takes it easy. She works as a reelancer and has her own company in visualarts. Last year she was hired to photograph at the Danone nations cup soccer final in Madrid.

Children rom 40 countries worldwide participated and the proceeds o this event went tocharity. ”For me this was the first time to document a sports event and I did not know what toexpect o it. In the end I was so thankul to be part o this wonderul event where I could cap-ture all these children rom different nations playing sports, still so pure and not so screwed up asus adults”.

Still she thinks creating or the desire o creation is the most beautiul thing there is. “Tereis no deadline attached to it, you do not need to negotiate with anyone and there is no moneyinvolved. Tere is only you and the engagement in the process o trying to visualize the images

in your head. I I ultimately succeed in creating what I had in mind, I can really all in love withmy own work. I find that very unusual”. Te euphoria never lasts long though. “Tere aremany images in my head”.

Petia PapazovaPetia Papazova is an artist who was born in 1975 in Gorna Oriahovitza, Bulgaria. In 1999 shegraduated rom the University o Veliko urnovo with a Fine Art Specialty. Now she lives andworks in Varna. She paints mainly in oil on canvas. Up till now she has had 16 solo exhibi-tions both in Bulgaria and abroad. She has participated also in 9 international art symposiumsand in many group exhibitions. She was awarded with the ‘Golden Roze’ award as an artist othe year rom Diva Gallery. Papazova’s art pieces have been collected all over the world.
