A SPRING Miscellany of 28:
SIGNED COPIES, history, Humour, exploration, FIRST
NATIONS, POETRY and all things bookish
Catalogue 34 April 2020
Items 1, 3 and 18.
To our friends and colleagues;
I couldn’t decide where to take my ‘covid vacation’: the workspace in our home, or the living room? The
latter had the benefit of a couch that often drew me from prone to supine position; tempting as that
was I chose the former which resulted in my spending computer time preparing this catalogue. I have
no doubt that there are more urgent matters filling your thoughts – and more important matters than
your book collection – but keep reading, I plead with you! For a bibliophile, browsing a book catalogue,
even in circumstances where a purchase is not a priority, is an enjoyable way in which to invest – not
spend - some time. In a time of transformation, it’s important to remember our historical roots, and the
simple pleasures that bring us contentment. As I was writing this opening paragraph, I was reminded of
Kathryn Smiley’s Editorial for the October 2001 issue of Firsts magazine following the events of 9/11:
“Today, nothing seems funny”, and then quoted from Ma Goad in Grapes of Wrath: “People is goin’ on –
chanin’ a little, maybe, but goin’ right on.” (Cited with permission; see https://firstsmagazine.com/
Highlights include a rare, signed essay by G. K. Chesterton of ‘Father Brown’ fame, the first two issues of
the broadside of The Provincial Party of British Columbia, and a Collection of early material on the
Russian Revolution and the rise of “Bolshevism” tabled in the House of Commons in 1919.
