Murder-Suicide Ruled In Double Farm Killing

An official ruling of murder and suicide has been made in the shotgun deaths of Kenneth Betz, 43, and his wife, Irene, 51, in their farm home on Gunnell ro,ad west

of Island road. . Sheriff Elwin Smith ana Coro­

ner M. Donald Burkhead agreed that Betz shot his wife to. death between 10 p.m. anc(, midnight. Saturday, then Killed himself sometime early Sunday morning, probably between 4 and 6 a.m. A trio of Lansing hunters, going to the back door of the house aoout 8 a.m. Sunday to request permission to hunt on the farm, discovered the ki.J.J,ings.

Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Pettit Funeral home for. Erilily K. Payne, a res· !dent of this area for more than 50 years, who died Saturday, Nov. 1, at Community hospital after a two week illness. Burial was in Rose Hill cemetery.

Mrs.· Payne was born Aug. 8, 1891 in Pettigo county, Donegal, Ireland, the daughter of Ann and Guy Hilliard. She came here with her parents as a young girl and lived the rest of her life in Eaton county, the past 40 years or more

Oct. 30, word· was received from the Columbia Press association that the 1958 Eiitonian had won the All-Amencan award,· the highest honor. for yearbook:S in the United States. Mrs. Rich ·sponsored the yearbook and Jo. Ann Cheney was the .editor, but everyone who worked on the book should certainly be proud of their fine work. ~ •
