Murder-Suicide Ruled In Double Farm Killing
An official ruling of murder and suicide has been made in the shotgun deaths of Kenneth Betz, 43, and his wife, Irene, 51, in their farm home on Gunnell ro,ad west
of Island road. . Sheriff Elwin Smith ana Coro
ner M. Donald Burkhead agreed that Betz shot his wife to. death between 10 p.m. anc(, midnight. Saturday, then Killed himself sometime early Sunday morning, probably between 4 and 6 a.m. A trio of Lansing hunters, going to the back door of the house aoout 8 a.m. Sunday to request permission to hunt on the farm, discovered the ki.J.J,ings.
Mrs. Betz was ly.i.ng in a pool of blood on the kitchen floor and Betz on a couch in the living room. The 20-gauge single-shot sh-otgun used in both Jilllings lay at his feet.
Smith said all indications point-ed to a quaiTel, \Wth Mrs. Betz packing her clothirlg and preparin_g to leave. Her packed suitcase .._ }Nas in the kitchen and her purse, -containing $70 in a paycheck and cash, was nearby. There was $98 in cash on the kitchen table and Betz' empty billfold $0 on the table.
"Beyond these inclications of a quaiTel, we'll never know exactly
·what happened," Smith said. "There was no suicide note or message of any kin!i We do know that Betz, after killirig his wife, waited four to six hours before killing himself."
The couple, who had no children, had lived in the neat farm home on Gunnell road for about a year. Both were employed in GM plants in Lii.nsing and. operated the farm in .their ~ spare time. Neighbors are ·caring foi: their eight head. of· dairy cattle which were not· milked Satlirday night.
Funeral· services ·foi:: Betz were held Wednesday .atternoon from the Burkhead-Cheney funeral home in Charlotte, with burial in Brickyard cemeterj. :Service5. for ~s. Betz were h~ld_W~~Y m Howell. , ,,. ,. · :,
