Background

There have been many terrorist attacks in the last

16 years in Mumbai.

The 1993 serial blasts were the most severe.

Thousands were killed and the attacks continue

as Mumbai remains to be a soft target for

terrorists

What, when, where..??

The attackers travelled by sea from Karachi, Pakistan, across the

Arabian sea.

The attacks begin at around 21:20 IST on 26th of November,2008

when the Chhatrapati Shivaji terminus was stormed by two gunmen.

Taj Mahal Palace&Tower and the Oberoi Trident were the next targetsNariman house, a Jewish center in Colaba was taken over by attackers

The NSG and the police forces worked together for hours before they

could kill the terrorists and save the hostages.

How they planned it..??

The terrorist outfit responsible for the attacks isbelieved to be Lashkar-e-Taiba.

The terrorists knew the locality in and out and themethodology used was truly professional and theyexecuted their plans brilliantly!

They were in contact with their masters in Pakistanthroughout the operation.

They mainly targeted the Nariman House.

The attackers used Google Earth to familiarizethemselves with the location of buildings.

They were well trained for the purpose and wellequipped with automatic weapons.

What are the lessons to be learnt..??

There is no denying the fact that Mumbai is becoming a softtarget for terrorists. The 26/11 attacks will be a motivation for

other terrorist groups to stage similar attacks in the future.

Being the commercial capital of the worlds second most

populated country, Mumbais security should be strengthened

and a regional counter-terrorist force should be developed and

trained to meet urgent threats. There should be an efficient coast

guard naval force which patrol the Mumbai ports day and night.

The NSG had to be transported from Delhi to Mumbai which

led to bloodshed which could very well have been avoided. For the first time in Indian history, the people stood up to react

to the mass killings . Citizen journalism was a new phenomenon

during the Mumbai attacks. The citizens reported all the events,

captured live videos from the attack sites and revealed to the

whole world, the atrocities that happened.
