The morning tea recognised local businesses and schools who give up their time to donate blood and plasma for those who need it. We were fortunate enough to be presented with a trophy and certificate for donating the most blood out of all the high schools in our area (Goulburn High, Trinity and Crookwell). Mulwaree contributed 97 donations, altogether saving 291 lives. What a fantastic effort! We enjoyed the morning tea and a tour around the centre, with the celebration being a good experience for all involved. We would like to encourage more people to donate throughout this year’s drive, with time being allocated on Thursday’s during sport time. See Mrs McClelland for more details. As a gesture of thanks the Inspector offered the students a tour of the Police Academy. On Thursday the 7th of April at 10.00, hours the students were met by Senior Constable Walsh and driven to the reception area. After sign in, they were taken to the weapons training facility and given a full explanation and demonstration of this state of the art world class facility. The students were also privileged to experience ‘Rossiville’, the outdoor training village. Here they were able to sit in a paddy van, attempt escape from the station holding cell and see where armed hold ups, domestic disputes and riots are trained for. The tour ended at the Police Shop where all manner of Police paraphernalia could be purchased. Inspector Green was then able to meet the students, thank them personally and present everyone with a lapel pin as a memento. The students all enjoyed the Academy tour immensely and it is hoped that this will be the first of many future positive interactions between the students of Mulwaree High and the NSW Police academy.

A Brush with the Law By Mr A Holbery The students from the Support Faculty have recently come to the attention of the NSW Police. Special action has resulted. While walking for PE last term, two students took charge of a lost dog. The phone number on the dog’s tag was called. A message saying, ‘the pup was safe’, left. Mulwaree School Cross Country 2016 Once again, we were greeted with a lovely blue sky, a cool-ish wind and excellent running conditions on the morning of Mulwaree’s 2016 Cross Country Championships. As per each year, The 17 + Age groups started the day. Thomas Menzies put on a commanding performance once again to place 1st in the boy’s event (by a huuuuuge margin). This was also the case in the girl’s event. Katie Croker set a new Mulwaree 17+ record, crossing the line in 22:04 for her 4km. Holly Boyland maintained her dominance from last year, taking out the 16’s girl’s event to win and Tyson Lewis went ‘back to back’, continuing his age group domination, this year in the 16’s boys. The 15’s age events are always the most tightly fought and finished of the championships. This year was no exception. The boy’s race crowned a new victor; with Darcy Lamb claiming his first ever age championship, beating home an extremely bunched top 5 field. These boys have had a stranglehold in the zone championships over the past few years and things are looking ominous again. Annabel Croker (B2B) became our 15’s girl’s champion, setting a new age group record of 22:25, and finishing well ahead of her rivals. There was a changing of the guard in 14’s boy’s and girl’s with Aidyn Williams and Emily Brooker dominating their rivals and achieving their first Age Champion status. Our 13 years age group saw Jacob Peterson go B2B in the boy’s event, whilst Alyssa Gregory claimed her first title as Mulwaree Champion. The last two events of the day - “The Which Way? Cup” - had our 12 year’s competitors complete their first ever Cross Country Championships 3km course. A huge congratulations to Naomi Corson in winning the girl’s event. Justin Miller-Norris closed out the proceedings by winning the boy’s event in commanding fashion. There were many highlights during the day, however I would particularly like to commend and congratulate all students for their participation and behaviour when they were competing in their race or relaxing/preparing on the Mulwaree Green. I would also like to thank all of the Mulwaree staff and our student helpers for making the Cross Country Carnival run as smoothly as possible!

Congratulations to all of our Age Champions and BANJORA for winning this year’s carnival. There was only 55 points separating 1st and 4th place!!!! The Zone Carnival was held on Friday 13th May at Mulwaree. Good luck to all of our competitors. Stay tuned for the zone report!! Goss From The Boss Last Thursday we had a number of visits from teachers from other schools and District Office. It is often the case that we look at the school through rose coloured glasses. However, our perceptions of Mulwaree were vindicated when these visitors made comment on how welcoming our students were,

how good they looked in their uniform and on how the culture of the school seemed so positive. From this base our teaching is launched and our classes are settled into their learning. It was nice to have these ‘outsiders’ just confirm what a great school Mulwaree is. Naplan has been completed for 2016. Results will come in September, however we must not lose sight of the true reason for these tests. They are basic skills tests designed to help teachers support our students learning. To make comparisons across schools or countries is really invalid. Our students do their best in the Naplan test. We continually show positive learning growth and will utilise these results in our programming and planning. I would like to thank Miss Burgess and her team for her excellent organisation. The tests ran smoothly over the 3 days due to this. Finally, our 7 to 11 exams are about to begin and I look forward to the results and end of semester reports. Our Senior Parent/Teacher night will be held next Wednesday evening (18/05/16). This is a great chance to communicate with teachers. As with the Junior evening, on line bookings will be available on Monday morning. Mr Purcell Principal

Club of the Week - Chess Club On Thursday 31st March, four members of the Mulwaree High School Chess Club played against students from Crookwell High School. Brodie McInnes, Thomas Ripphausen, Euan O’Flynn and Keven Ralston all did very well, each winning their match in fairly quick time. This is the first time since I’ve been running the Chess Club that we have won our first round in the chess competition, and we did it comprehensively, so these four students should be congratulated. The senior members of the chess team were unavailable due to exams, so these students did an exceptional job to step up with little notice and represent the school so well. Our next round sees us travel to Trinity next term. We’ve never won there but with so much depth to our chess team this year, we should give them a good challenge! A big thank you must go out to Owen Kelleher, Kestrel Ehrke, Joe Chabaji and Connor McInnes who helped prepare and clean up the bunker, where we played, and made the visiting Crookwell students and teacher very welcome. Both the Crookwell and Mulwaree teams played in a friendly and sporting spirit, and all the students involved made it a very enjoyable occasion. If you are interested in chess, or any other table top game, and wish to hang out on cold winter lunch times playing games in a warm room, you are most welcome to come along to chess club. Chess club is open break 2 (lunch break) in E9. Come along and learn to play chess or other games, or learn to improve your play. If you have any questions please ask me (Mr McMahon) any time, you can usually find me in the E Block Maths Staffroom.

Maths Assessment Update (Part 2) Dear Parents, welcome to Part 2 of our information about how assessment in mathematics is going to be conducted in Years 7 to 10 in 2016. If you have any further questions or would like to discuss our faculty's assessment policy, please contact the Head Teacher, Ms Ferme. Please see last week's newsletter for information about assessment portfolios. What is different in Years 9 and 10? Students in Years 9 and 10 will now be assessed against outcomes relating to their stream rather than the entire year. These streams are known as 5.1 Pathway, 5.2 Pathway and 5.3 Pathway (formerly Standard, Intermediate and Advanced). Formal exams will only contain material that is presented in the separate streams and students will be graded against their stream’s outcomes, not the whole of the year group. RoSA Grading in Mathematics At the end of Year 10 students are eligible to receive a Record of School Achievement (RoSA). Achievement in Mathematics is recorded on the ROSA as a grade between E2 and A10. These are not recorded on school reports. Further information on the ROSA Grading in mathematics is available at: http://arc.bostes.nsw.edu.au/go/9-10/stage-5-grading/cpds/index/mathematics
