Michael Walsh, Executive Director

The Director’s BoxDear Friends of MAC,

As you may have noticed, PP&R is more than a little proud of the National Gold Medal Award recently earned. One reason our programs are considered excellent is due to the support that comes directly from our community members.

One recent example at MAC is extensive improvements to our ceramics and metals studios that wouldn’t have been possible without the generosity of individual donors. In the coming weeks MACA will kick-off its annual capital campaign. On behalf of our board, I hope you’ll consider supporting our vital efforts with a donation comfortable to you.

Thanks!

FAMILY CLAY NIGHT

Fridays 6 to 8:30 pmJanuary 13 to March 16

No pre-registration Come as a family and play with clay! $10/hr per adult and child pair. $4/hr for each additional child. clay. Not for solo participants. This is an adult and child activity. Use "#

These classes offer a process-oriented art experience. While providing instruction in the use of art materials and techniques, our teachers guide students through the creative process in an effort to elicit and encourage each child’s individual style of visual expression. Rather than simply following directions to construct prescribed art “products,” children in our classes learn to trust their own creative impulses while being supported by their parent or guardian. We recommend both adult and child wear grubbies as these classes can be

messy. All materials are included. Cleanup is part of visual arts classes. Once classes are full, we cannot accept extra students.

In this workshop, we’ll look at how poetry works, as writers and as readers. Students will write in response to exercises, and in response to what they read; we’ll read closely one another’s work, and the work of other poets both familiar and not. We’ll pay particular attention to revision, exploring various approaches to this crucial process; students will pursue the poems that they write through multiple and distinct versions, expanding and focusing their sense of the possibilities of their own writing. Anyone interested in writing poetry, and motivated to write every week, is welcome.

356922 Tues. 6:30 - 9:00 pm Jan. 10 - Mar. 13 $180 [10 classes] David Abel

You don’t have to be a writer to produce powerful and imaginative creative work. Through a series of enjoyable, illuminating exercises, right brain energy is channeled into the making of creative vignettes, word portraits, poetry, and short stories. The right brain’s connection to sensation is also explored as you learn to make your writing come alive through image, metaphor, voice, and surprising language. Dreams, music, painting and poetry are used to provide inspiration. Experienced poets and prose writers as well as those who have never written before are welcome.

Participants will use prompts and other exercises to trigger and unlock their memories, to zero in on those moments that are both rich and significant. READING WORKSHOP

Do you wish that you could read your poems with less fear and mumbling, more energy and applause? Poets tend to be quiet observers, but the words you write can show you how to say them. This free one-day workshop will focus on strategies for performing your work, providing tools, tricks, and perspectives. We’ll explore the multiple modes of performance, and consider ways to use your outside voice, engage the audience, and work in a variety of environments. Bring another poet’s poem you like, and a couple of your own; be ready to move around a little, and to use a pen or pencil.

With the new digital cameras and the current image enhancing techniques it is easier to photograph our artwork. Yet, digital cameras don’t do miracles when it comes to exposing for the right tonalities, colors, and setting up strong compositions of our work. How to highlight our art is often a big issue. Since the instructor of this course works with many painters, sculptors, graphic artists, ceramicists and art directors, this course will be tailored to the needs of the participants. Discover all the ins and outs of setting up lighting, tuning it for the best color and perspective and deal with technical matters that are so important in realizing such images for display, websites, prints and slide shows of your fine artwork. Bring your digital camera, tripod and artwork. Having a laptop or computer at home with photo editing software such as Adobe Photoshop or Elements is highly recommended.
