The research department of Molecular and Developmental Genetics,

headed by prof. Bart De Strooper, is integrated in both VIB and KULeuven

(Belgium). VIB is an entrepreneurial research institute in life sciences,

uniting the forces of 70 research groups spread over the four Flemish

In the framework of the collaboration between VIB, KULeuven

and cure of human neurological diseases like Alzheimer disease, Parkinson

disease, and mental retardation. A major part of ongoing research is

centered on synaptic function and dysfunction. The department received

a major �nancial donation from the Foundation for Dystonia Research,

Belgium to support a new laboratory investigating the molecular

pathophysiology of dystonia. We will top up this grant with signi�cant

funding from the department supporting salaries, working costs and
