Jackson, 82, was approved for induction by the IAAF Council in Monaco yesterday. The only other Australian to achieve the honour is fellow female sprinting legend, Betty Cuthbert. Jackson won the 100m and 200m sprint double at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics. Mickle’s consistency wins out JAVELIN thrower Kim Mickle has been rewarded for a stellar 2013, edging out Sally Pearson to claim the Australian female athlete of the year award. Mickle and 100m hurdling superstar Pearson both won silver medals at August’s world athletics championships in Moscow. For Mickle it was the culmination of a consistently successful year. Australia’s only other medallist at the world titles, walker Jared Tallent, was crowned male athlete of the year last night. Top AIS honours shared BMX world champion Caroline Buchanan and rowing world champion Kim Crow have shared the top honour at the Australian Institute of Sport awards. The pair were named joint winners of the athlete of the year award in Canberra, beating a list of finalists that included Matthew Cowdrey (swimming), Cate Campbell (swimming), Evan O’Hanlon (athletics) and Alex ‘‘Chumpy’’ Pullin (snowboard). Buchanan won two world championships in 2013. Basketball NBA Home team in CAPS: GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS 116 Oklahoma City Thunder 115; NEW YORK KNICKS 106 Houston Roc- kets 109. Sydney crush woeful Heart Chris Naumoff arrives in time to head the ball out of defence for Sydney FC during last night’s A-League clash against Melbourne Heart at AAMI Park Picture: ROBERT PREZIOSO A-LEAGUE DRAW Round 6 (NT time) Today: Perth Glory v Adelaide United at nib Stadium (4pm), Western Sydney Wanderers v Melbourne Victory at Pir- tek Stadium (6.15pm). Tomorrow: Newcastle Jets v Brisbane Roar at Hunter Stadium (3.30pm). Tuesday: Central Coast Mariners v Wellington Phoenix at North Sydney Oval (7pm). SYDNEY FC surged to third on the A-League table after a 2-0 win over a diabolical Mel- bourne Heart at AAMI Park last night. The result heaps pressure on Heart boss John Aloisi, whose side remain bottom of the table and without a win since February. For the second straight week, the hosts went behind in the 27th minute, and never looked likely to recover as the Sky Blues kept a clean sheet away from home for the first time in 22 games. The opener came after chief tormentor Joel Chianese was brought down in the box by Rob Wielaert and referee Alan Milliner wasted no time in pointing to the spot. Alessandro Del Piero made Heart pay the penalty, send- ing Andrew Redmayne the wrong way. Chianese added his name on the scoresheet just before halftime when he ghosted into the penalty area and tap- ped home Ali Abbas’s low cross at the back post. The Heart players were booed off by their fans at the break, but it could have been so different with Michael Mifsud wasting a glorious chance to break Heart’s long goal drought after 14 minutes. Played onside by Brett Emerton, Mifsud had just Vedran Janjetovic to beat, but he blasted his effort straight at the advancing goalkeeper. But from that point in the game the Heart were sub- jected to attack after attack, with Redmayne making smart saves to deny Chianese and Nicky Carle, while Del Piero and Chris Naumoff also went close. Sydney continued to domi- nate after the break and a second successive victory never looked in doubt as the Heart struggled to mount any decent attack. Chianese missed a sitter from five metres on the hour mark while Aziz Behich got away with a clear handball in the area while trying to con- trol a high ball. Aloisi was brutal in assessing his team’s performance. ‘‘The performance wasn’t good enough. Not accept- able,’’ he said. ‘‘We started badly, looked nervy . . . the second half we pushed but still we weren’t good enough tonight.’’ Sydney FC coach Frank Farina toasted his team’s ef- fort, winners for the second week in a row.

SYDNEY FC surged to thirdon the A-League table after a2-0 win over a diabolical Mel-bourne Heart at AAMI Parklast night.

The result heaps pressureon Heart boss John Aloisi, whose side remain bottom ofthe table and without a winsince February.

For the second straightweek, the hosts went behindin the 27th minute, and neverlooked likely to recover as theSky Blues kept a clean sheetaway from home for the firsttime in 22 games.

The opener came after chieftormentor Joel Chianese wasbrought down in the box byRob Wielaert and refereeAlan Milliner wasted no timein pointing to the spot.

Alessandro Del Piero madeHeart pay the penalty, send-ing Andrew Redmayne thewrong way.

Chianese added his nameon the scoresheet just beforehalftime when he ghosted

into the penalty area and tap-ped home Ali Abbas’s lowcross at the back post.

The Heart players werebooed off by their fans at thebreak, but it could have beenso different with MichaelMifsud wasting a gloriouschance to break Heart’s longgoal drought after 14 minutes.

Played onside by BrettEmerton, Mifsud had justVedran Janjetovic to beat, buthe blasted his effort straightat the advancing goalkeeper.

But from that point in thegame the Heart were sub-jected to attack after attack,

with Redmayne makingsmart saves to deny Chianeseand Nicky Carle, while DelPiero and Chris Naumoff alsowent close.

Sydney continued to domi-nate after the break and asecond successive victorynever looked in doubt as theHeart struggled to mount anydecent attack.

Chianese missed a sitterfrom five metres on the hourmark while Aziz Behich gotaway with a clear handball inthe area while trying to con-trol a high ball. Aloisi wasbrutal in assessing his team’sperformance.

‘‘The performance wasn’tgood enough. Not accept-able,’’ he said.

‘‘We started badly, lookednervy . . . the second half wepushed but still we weren’tgood enough tonight.’’

Sydney FC coach FrankFarina toasted his team’s ef-fort, winners for the secondweek in a row.
