1 November 2016 Multiple District 105 Multiple District Lioness Chairman 2015 to 2017 - Angela Howard ioness Newsletter Greetings to everyone;:Autumn is here already, where did the summer go? We have all been so busy it has flown past. Having read about all the summer activities that clubs have been involved in, there has been lots of hard work, fun and fellowship going on throughout the Lioness Clubs of MD 105, with some amazing results. Well done everyone, you are doing wonderful work for your communities and the wider world and long may we all continue to serve. In my last newsletter, I said that plans were underway for our Lioness Conference in February. I am pleased to report that we have now chosen the venue, which is The Marriot Hotel in Huntingdon, a venue we have used before that proved to be suitable for all our needs and easily accessible for everyone. As the format of last year’s conference proved to be very popular we aim to replicate it this year. You will arrive on the Friday making your own arrangements for dinner. Saturday will be the main full day of business followed by the dinner dance in the evening. Sunday departure time will be of your own choice. More detailed information will be sent out very shortly. It would be amazing to once again see representation from every Club in the MD, as we draw close to 40 years of service, let us all be there and have a great week-end. I was also able to pass on the good news that the new proposed guidelines presented to the Council of Governors at Lions MD Convention in May had now been officially accepted. It was the intention that we would hold a training day at MD Headquarters on the 30th October the idea being that we could have one or two members from each Lioness Club and the same from each of their sponsoring Lions Clubs present, and Advisory Body members. As space is limited it would have been difficult to invite more people. The training session was anticipated to take two hours followed by lunch and then departure. Having thought about it again, and bearing in mind it is a lot of travelling for clubs for a two hour session, I felt it would be more beneficial for this to be done at Conference, where more Lionesses are present and therefore more people will be involved. Our ruby celebrations seem way ahead, but the 3rd June 2017 will be here before we know it. As I have been visiting clubs it has been exciting to hear the plans being made for the Ruby Tea Parties. Lots of suggestions and lovely ideas, I am sure we are all going to have a great day. I did say as my contribution as MD Chairman, I would be willing to take on a challenge to help promote Lionesses and raise funds for Charity, “The Admiral Nurses”. Lioness JoAnn Williams suggested a challenge to me and has since sent me the details, the challenge is to “Walk the Dome” in London. I am currently checking out the information with the intention to take on this challenge. Watch this space!! Over the last two months as well as going to several other business meetings, I have had the pleasure to attend Thetford (Breckland)’s Club meeting, two Lioness Club Anniversaries Thetford (Breckland) and Chelmsford, both very enjoyable events. I recently spent the week-end in Pontefract where I had the honour to lead the parade at The Lantern Festival. This was a real magical spectacle as darkness fell and the very imaginative creations of lanterns were paraded through the town and into the Valley Gardens where more lanterns lit the way through the paths and trees. Music, stalls and refreshments awaited the public as they gathered to enjoy the rest of the fun filled evening. A really successful, enjoyable community event. I will be out and about over the coming weeks and looking forward to spending time with everyone, the festive season is approaching fast and we will all be busy with many family and club activities. May I take this opportunity to wish you and your family; Issue 8 November 2016

At our last Conference, our speaker Ruby who came totalk to us about Dementia UK, also made us aware ofthe “Admiral Nurses”. Specially trained nurses able todeal with patients suffering from Dementia andAlzheimer’s. I know there are many of us who haveexperienced the heartache and difficulties of havingmembers of our family or close friends who havesuffered with these illnesses and would have greatlybenefited from the help and support of these nurseshad they been around at the time. So I havechosen the Admiral Nurses as my chosencharity for this year, and hope that everyonewill be as keen to support them as I am.

Pontefract’s 5th Annual Lantern Festival took placeon Saturday 15th October and attracted crowdsfrom all over the district. It is difficult to say how

many people were in attendance but the parade itself reachedalmost half a mile from Salter Row all the way back to Pontefract Castle

and was a truly tremendous site to see.Lanterns of all shapes and sizes lit the streets ofPontefract as the parade made its way from the Castle through the town centre, terminating in Friarwood Valley Gardens where Ridings FM providedentertainment for everyone.

President Jeanne Morgan said “In the five years we havebeen running the Lantern Festival it is amazing how the interest has grown. Thefirst year we had around 300 people taking part and, whilst there were one or

two extravagant lanterns, the majority of them were simple designs with a bit of decoration but eachyear we have seen a few more unusual lanterns and this year it was noticeable just how many differentones we had – everything from a dragon, a radio, umbrellas, flowers, butterflies, a Tardis, Sleeping

Beauty’s fairies, Cinderella’s Coach and we even had part of Pontefract Castlereplicated. The amount of time, effort and imagination put in to making the lanternsis amazing and we are truly proud to host an event with such great community spirit.”Although the Lioness Club has over 20 members we could not put on this eventwithout the help and support of others and we would particularly like to thank theFriends of Friarwood Valley Gardens, Minden Bugle and Drums Band, Yorkshire RoseFirst Aid, The Neighbourhood Policing Team and Pontefract ATC for all their help andsupport, not forgetting of course our own family, friends and Castleford & PontefractDistrict Lions Club who not only sponsor us but come along and help us with ouractivities whenever possible.Prior to the festival WDH kindly allowed the Lioness

club to use a shop on Chequerfield Circle to run free workshops for thepublic so anyone could drop in and make a lantern or, for those who weretoo busy, ready-made ones could be purchased for a small donation! The Lantern Festival is now a key event in Pontefract’s calendar and theLioness Club will soon be announcing the 2017 date so don’t forget to keepa look out so you can be part of this great event.
