What is multi-layer pipe?� e Multi-layer Pipe System (MLP) is an advanced, very hard wearing, and easy to work with system. It is manufactured using a well-engineered combination of toughened Pex-b plastic and overlap welded aluminium. � is composite of high quality materials means that multi-layer pipe has similar strength and durability to metal pipes such as copper; but also is lightweight, and easy to cut, shape and install like plastic pipes. It is a tried and tested, product designed to to give plumbers and installers the perfect balance of dependability and ease of installation.
Multi-layer pipe was � rst invented around 20 years ago. Since its introduction, it has been used in countless installations accross the globe and has established an excellent track record of reliability. During this time however, it was in relatively limited supply in the UK, and carried a high price tag due to its advanced design and the complicated manufacturing processes involved. � is meant that it was unable to compete with conventional piping systems in the domestic plumbing market on price, and so remained the product of choice for certain specialist commercial projects. In recent times however, a number of manufacturers have sought to bring down the cost of this highly desirable piping system without compromising on quality. � rough large scale production and associated economies of scale they have done just that.
Rifeng Piping Enterprises is one of the very largest and most successful of these companies. On average they produce over 1,000,000 metres of high grade multi-layer pipe every single day. We at UKPS are proudly the sole importer and distributor of their products in the UK, and � rmly believe that advanced piping systems such as these are the future of the UK’s plumbing industry. We look forward to bringing this exciting system to both the commercial and domestic plumbing markets, at a price that will e� ecitvely compete with systems currently on the market.
Fast, Easy and E! cient� e clever combination of tough cross linked PEX plastic and overlap welded aluminium in the MLP system has given it some very desirable characteristics.
� e aluminium core of the pipe gives it a ‘shape memory’ property. � is means that it can be bent by hand and will remain in that shape. Plumbers can therefore reduce the number of � ttings used in an installation, saving them both time and money. In addition the pipe can be cut to size from a large coil of pipe, which further reduces installation times, and because there are no o� cuts virtually eliminates waste.
Tough as NailsIn addition to being easy to work with, multi-layer pipe is incredibly hard wearing and dependable. � e presence of the aluminium layer means that the the pipe expands and contracts much less than existing plastic systems. Instead, it has thermal expnsion properties that are very similar to copper pipe, which means no sagging and far less strain put on the joints. All of which increases the lifespan and overall reliability of the installation. In addition this gives MLP a very broad operating temperature range, allowing it to function normally between -20 oC and 95 oC making it suitable for a wide variety of applications.
Organic buildup on the inside of the pipe is e� ectively eliminated as the aluminium layer creates a 100% e! cient oxygen barrier. Existing barrier pipe systems usually have a coating on the outside of the pipe to achive this. However this can wear away over time allowing growth on the inside of the pipe. � is is not an issue for MLP as the barrier is e� ectively built into the wall of the pipe.

� e Rifeng F5 Fitting consists of a grooved, nickel plated, brass insert, surrounded by a stainless steel sleeve. � e high quality materials used in the manufacture of the R ifeng F5 � tting should give any installer who uses them con� dence in their work.
When the secure crimped connection is made, the Rifeng multi layer pipe and the stainless steel sleeve of the � tting are crimped together over the grooved structure of the insert and its double O-rings. � is forms a long lasting, pressure resistant seal. � e seal itself is made on the inside of the pipe instead of the outside like many other plumbing systems. � e main bene� t of this is that scu� s on the outside of the pipe will not compromise the seal, as o� en happens on other externally sealing systems.
So con� dent are Rifeng in the mechanical strength of these � ttings, that they are covered by a 25 year, fully insurance backed guarantee.

Cut pipe to sizeMake sure the blade of the cutter is angled perfectly straight accross the pipe. A clean, straight cut makes sure it will connect properly to the � tting.
Bevel the endsPush the correct sized bevel into the pipe. ! en, while exerting pressure, twist the bevel back and forth all the way round. Plastic shavings should come away from the pipe. When no more shavings fall from the pipe, then the bevel is complete.
Insert ! ttingCheck that the double O-rings are intact and free of dirt. Push the F5 � tting � rmly into the beveled pipe, if it feels sti" ; then the pipe is not beveled fully. Check that the pipe can be seen through the three inspection holes in the sleeve of the pipe. ! is indicates that it is fully inserted.
Press ! tting together with clampManual clamps should use be set to a sti" ness that exerts approx 5Kg of pressure at the head. Powered clamps should be properly calibrated, and use U-pro� le jaws. Ensure the clamp head is # ush with the plastic disc at the base of the � tting and make the press.
Inspect the ! ttingInspect the � tting a$ er pressing. It should appear as pictured to the le$ . ! ere should be three lines going straight accross the pipe. ! is forms a hard wearing seal over the double O-rings. ! is completes the F5 type � tting.

A More Traditional Fitting
In addition to the Rifeng F5 crimp � ttings, plumbers who would prefer to work with something more familar have the option available to them in the form of the Rifeng F1 compression � tting.
Requiring no special tools, the F1 compression � tting is put in place in exactly the same way as a traditional copper compression � tting.
Simply slide the nut and and olive over the pipe, place the insert in the pipe, and tighten with a spanner.
� e F1 compression � tting shares the F5 Crimp � ttings extra secure grooved, nickel plated brass, double O-ring insert making it just as secure.
� e Rifeng F1 � tting is also covered by their 25 year insurance backed warranty giving any installer who uses them complete peace of mind.

Sleeve the nut and oliveSlide the nut over the pipe followed by the olive as indicated.
Insert ! tting bodyCheck O-rings on the main body are intact and free of dirt. Insert the main body of the � tting into the pipe. It should go in easily; if it is sti" then pipe is not fully bevelled.
Tighten with spannersSlide the nut, olive and � tting together and tighten o" with spanners. ! is completes the F1 type � tting.
For joining Pex-Al-Pex on to
any � tting with male threaded
connection, or standard copper
pipe.
1. Bevel Pex-Al-Pex pipe.
2. Place olives and nuts on over
the Pex-Al-Pex and copper pipe.
3. Slide together and tighten
with wrenches.

Why Pex-Al-Pex?
All piping used in our systems is multi-layer pex-al-pex. � is has several advantages over standard plastic pipes when used in a modern under-� oor heating system.
Easier to Install� e fact the multi-layer pipe has an aluminium layer means that it will not snap back to its original shape once it has been bent to where the installer wants it. � is means that it is much easier to put in place and does not require excessive clips and holdings to be installed. it can also be made to make much tighter turns at the end of loops meaning that there is not a bulge at the end of each loop.
Higher ! ermal ConductivityRifeng multi-layer pex-al-pex has a much higher thermal conductivity than standard PEX pipe. � is means that more of the heat is transmitted into the � oor in which it is laid. Making the system more e! ective
Greater Pressure Resistancemulti-layer Pex-Al-Pex pipe has nearly double the pressure resistance of standard pex barrier pipe. multi-layer Pex-Al-Pex can withstand pressures of up to 10 Bar at 90C whereas simple PEX barrier pipe typically will only operate up to 5 Bar at the same temperature.
Better ! ermal Expansion PropertiesAccording to tests conducted by Rifeng Piping Enterprises 100m of standard PEX barrier pipe will expand by approximately half a metre during a 50 C temperature increase. Many installers believe that special considerations must be made to allow for its change in length, such as placing it in pipe conduit. Multi-layer Pex-Al-Pex does not have this problem, as it barely expands at all with a temperature increase. Which means so it may be screeded over directly, allowing for far better thermal conduction into the screed with less wear and tear being exerted on the pipe.
More E" ective Oxygen Barrier� e oxygen barrier is created by the aluminium layer inside multi-layer pipe, whereas with ordinary PEX the barrier is typically an externally applied coating. � e expanding and contracting pipe can wear this coating away. � is means that over time, the system will begin to su! er from ine" ciencies due to organic build up. Pex-Al-Pex does not have this problem.

Snow Melting Systems
Due to its broad operating temperature range, Rifeng multi-layer can be used in extreme cold.
Due to the pipes � exible, yet rigid design and high quality � ttings, water can actually freeze in the pipe without bursting it. � is innate resistance to extreme cold makes it suitable for use in applications such as underground snow melting systems.
Rifeng MLP has been tested succesfully down to -20 C without rupturing, meaning it can withstand all but the very harshest of cold climates.
Fire Supression Systems
Modern � re suppression systems demand extremely high performance plumbing in order to operate e! ectively. � ey must be able to deliver large volumes of water at high pressure in order to function e! ectively. In addition, a leak during operation could have catastrophic results, so reliability is of paramount concern.
Rifeng multi-layer pipe is a perfect choice for use in such systems. It is able to deliver large volumes of cold water at up to 12 Bar. � e pipe’s rugged design combined with high quality crimped � ttings, ensure that these extremely demanding systems function as designed, with a very low chance of failure at the moment it is needed most.
