RESEARCH CONTRIBUTION IN A NUT SHELL

Professor Muhammad Iqbal identified the ontogenetic trends of variation in size

and proportions of the cambial initials, possibilities of polynucleation in the fusiform

cambial initials, and correlations between radial growth and environmental factors.

50

Refuting the earlier assumptions, he established a higher figure (15-40%) for the

proportion of ray initials in the cambium of tropical trees. His work led to a new

understanding of cambial cell dynamics by showing that elongating tips of fusiform

initials grow along the tangential walls rather than the radial walls of the

neighbouring cells, and that the intrusive growth of fusiform initials has a role in

establishing boundaries of horizontal tiers of the initials in storeyed cambium, and in

the process of “elimination of the initials”. The unusual claim of the occurrence of

intrusive growth of elongating cells was explained on the basis of diurnal changes of

the internal strains in stem tissues, which create the observed diurnal variation in

the girth of plant axis.

Iqbal established correlation of leaf emergence with cambial activation even in

species having a considerable time gap between the two events. Iqbal analyzed the

structural, functional and biochemical plant responses to environmental pollution at

different stages of plant growth and demonstrated that pollution stress alters plant

growth patterns, production of secondary metabolites, efficiency of antioxidant

enzymatic as well as non-enzymatic defense system, composition of seed oils,

development of lateral meristem, periodicity of seasonal cambial activity, and

attributes of wood biology. He undertook in vitro studies to develop stress-tolerant

plants. His recent works focus on the modulation of antioxidant defence system in

plants against abiotic stresses, phytoremediation potential of selected plants and

the role of proteomics in these areas of research.

CONTRIBUTION IN PLANNING AND EXECUTION

As Dean, Faculty of Science In the early 1990s, Iqbal, as the founder Dean of the Faculty of Science at Jamia Hamdard, New Delhi, initiated development of four departments of studies (Biochemistry, Chemistry, Environmental Botany, Toxicology), a science library, an animal house and a central instrumentation facility. In the animal house, facilities were developed to breed and maintain out-bred Wistar strain rats, outbred Swiss albino mice, and rabbits, etc. The instrumentation centre was supplemented with a number of modern equipments such as Liquid Scintillation Counter, Gamma Counter, Gel-Laser Densitometer, Spectrofluorimeter, Sequencing Gel Analyser (DNA & Protein), Gas chromatograph and High Performance Liquid Chromatograph, etc.

As Head, Department of Botany As the founder Head of the Department of Botany at Jamia Hamdard, New Delhi, Iqbal established research laboratories equipped with a variety of modern instruments related to microscopy, microtomy, spectrometery, chromatography, electrophoresis, environmental analysis and tissue culture, etc. A modest green house and an environmentally controlled glass house were also constructed. A teaching programme leading to the award of M.Sc. degree in Environmental Botany was launched in 1994. This was the maiden attempt to initiate a degree course in Environmental Botany in the country. As Controller of Admissions As the incharge of admission affairs at Jamia Hamdard (1991-98), Iqbal streamlined the admission process by introducing Entrance Test for each class. He initiated evaluation of Response Sheets by Optical Mark Reader and computerized the processing of results so as to gain in accuracy, transparency and efficiency in the admission procedures. As Vice-Chancellor, Jamia Hamdard During his short regime as the Vice-Chancellor, Iqbal took up the long pending issue of the funding pattern of Jamia Hamdard with the University Grants Commission, New Delhi. He was successful in getting declared by Shri Arjun Singh, Minister for Human Resource Development, Govt of India, that in addition to a 100% Plan Grant, the UGC will also provide 75% of the non-plan expenditure of Jamia Hamdard. Iqbal also took initiative to provide special incentives to those employees of Jamia Hamdard who work hard and have been exceedingly committed to their duties.
