GENERAL INFORMATION

COURSE DESCRIPTIONAcute surgical illness and injury can occur any time, any place. This course, designed for general surgeons, emergency medicine physicians, family medicine physicians and other providers, provides current information on the management of common surgical and trauma emergencies. The course focuses on tools and guidelines for rural hospital providers and establishes a framework for regional systems of care. COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVESUpon conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:• Identify a surgical emergency requiring rapid transfer to a higher level of care.• Formulate an appropriate plan of care for a patient with a suspected small bowel

obstruction.• Describe strategies for damage control resuscitation in the pre-hospital

environment.• Develop a system for closed-look, action-oriented performance improvement.• Critique the care of traumatically injured patients at their institution.• Summarize the factors leading to the successful development of a regionalized

care system.

INTENDED AUDIENCEThis program has been designed for physicians practicing general and trauma surgery, emergency medicine, and family medicine.

CREDIT College of Medicine, Mayo Clinic, is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

College of Medicine, Mayo Clinic, designates this live activity for a maximum of 8.25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

DATE AND LOCATIONThe Mucha Symposium on Acute Care and Trauma Surgery will be held August 8-9, 2013. Course headquarters will be located in Leighton Auditorium on the second fl oor of the Siebens Medical Education Building, Mayo Clinic, 100 Second Avenue Southwest, Rochester, Minnesota. Meeting facilities are easily accessible by skyway and pedestrian subway, which connect Mayo Clinic to shops, restaurants, and hotels.
