Austin Museums offer an eclectic mix of art and history to see any time of the year, any day of the week in a variety of venues located across the city. You can enjoy the work of designers, painters, sculptors, writers, photographers, filmmakers, dancers and musicians. Austin offers museums featuring past presidents such as the LBJ Presidential Library and Museum, and ones that exhibit our diversity, the Mexic-Arte Museum. We have museums that honor our Texas history and the United States Military, such as the Bob Bullock Museum and the Texas Military Forces Museum at Camp Mabry. The Austin Children’s Museum is also very popular, especially for the younger crowd. We also have the nation's largest university-owned collection in one exhibit, the Blanton Museum. Art and history isn’t just for tourists, it is a part of our creative soul. So visit a museum soon.

The nation's largest university-owned collection is exhibited at the Blanton Museum, and you can view up-and-coming talent in our more intimate gallery settings. Austin boasts several world-renowned classical performing arts organizations, including Austin Lyric Opera, Ballet Austin, and the Austin Symphony, as well as a rich local tradition of innovative and avant-guarde theater groups. Austin is a creative community with a burgeoning circle of live performance theater venues, including the Long Center for the Performing Arts, Paramount Theatre, Zachary Scott Theatre Center, Vortex Repertory Company, Salvage Vanguard Theater, Scottish Rite Children's Theater, Hyde Park Theatre, and Esther's Follies. The Zilker Summer Musical, an Austin institution serving up musical theater under the stars, celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2008. The Texas Film Commission is headquartered in Austin, and increasingly the city is being utilized as a favorite film location. The city hosts several film festivals, including the famed SXSW Film Festival held every Spring. Get out and about and explore!

... And of course, there’s the music. Austin is known across the globe as the Live Music Capital of the World, with literally hundreds of music venues and a reputation for nurturing talent. Some also call it the Third Coast because of the city's influence on popular culture. The premier showcase of the city's music scene is the annual spring SXSW Festival when musicians and fans from around the world descend on Austin. The longest-running concert music program on American television, Austin City Limits, is videotaped on the University of Texas at Austin campus. Once known mostly for its country and blues music, todays Austin's music scene is as diverse as its ever-growing population, hosting musical events from the Celtic Festival to Reggae Fest. Austin’s artistic side is alive and well. We are a creative community of designers, painters, sculptors, dancers, filmmakers, musicians . . . artists of all kinds. The venues for experiencing art in Austin are just as diverse.

The city is a cradle of musical talent, nurturing everyone from the late Stevie Ray Vaughan and Janis Joplin, to living legends like Willie Nelson, Jerry Jeff Walker, and The Dixie Chicks.
