As I sit and write it feels about as wintery as ever but there are subtle differences. I can hear the gurgling of water in the side stream by our office and the ice dam on the roof is dripping away – slowly. My feet will be free soon.

I cannot believe that MTN Town Magazine is preparing to celebrate One Year of publishing and we want to thank you! Why MTN Town Magazine-Colorado? Well, every time I turned on the news it was all about the weather and events taking place on the front range. Publications were always specific to one area in Colorado or they would talk about the city and touch on the mountain towns. I felt like we deserved more.

There are amazing, people and businesses thriving here and they all have unique stories to tell. The magazine started as a blog then moved to digital publishing and then ultimately here it is in your hands or maybe your reading our magazine on line.

In this issue we talk about some great locally produced gear and products. We give you the inside scoop on some fabulous restaurants and the apres scene. There is a story on a jaw dropping mud season retreat run by a Telluride local. The feature story is an unbelievable narrative of the life of a determined woman who is a top Paralympics’ ski racer. If she can attain her dreams then so can you. Inspiration for all of us!

Spring is here and there is ton to do, start planning some fun, sunny days. Skiing, Snowboarding One of the first pluses of Monarch Mountain is their location to parking. You literally pull up, exit your vehicle and you’re

on the snow, no buses or gondolas to lifts to access more lifts. Life is simple and sweet, perfect for families of course but Monarch is also a fantastic mountain for those who want a bigger serving of fun, adventure and challenge. Hike to Terrain will treat you to great caches of snow in Mirkwood Bowl, the East Trees, Elation Ridge and a ton of other runs that offer steep expert chutes and glades, rock cliffs, and excellent tree skiing. You’re a park Rat? No problem, The Never Summer Terrain Park has great features including cool natural features, fun-boxes, rails, hips, and hits for skiers and snowboarders. For those who are learning to launch their boards into new heights there is The Tilt Terrain Park, located just below the base of the Panorama lift. Back to newer skiers, there are plenty of groomed intermediate runs as well as the very cool. The Catepillar Lift is a hoot for newbie’s as well as their seasoned

friends and family. This 450 foot long covered conveyor lift has clear walls so you can see everything as you head up – talk about being spoiled! Monarch has done a remarkable amount of improvements over the past few years. They have dramatically improved the skiing experience with a new parking lot, new restrooms, a lodge expansion and upgrade, reduced pricing for children’s programs and the inclusion of the new Elmo’s Bar where skiers and riders can enjoy a cold or warm beverage without going up to the Sidewinder Saloon. Big screen televisions carrying sporting events and picture windows looking out onto the mountain make Elmo’s Bar the newest hot spot for Apres Ski. What hasn’t changed is the incredible, happy attitude there staff has at any time of the year. Everyone is friendly and helpful all the time.

Cats A very hip amenity that the area offers is Monarch’s Cat Skiing. A full day of Cat skiing will bring you to over 1,000+

acres of steep powdery runs, the stuff of your dreams. Monarch Cat Skiing is like booking a day on your own private mountain since the tour goes up with no more than 11 other guests per day (12 people max if you do the math). The Cat Skiing staff is well seasoned, certified guides who very experienced with the terrain. They know this area inside and out.

Kayaks With spring here in Colorado’s mountain towns the event calendar is packed with a ton of fun events and competitions. Go ski with a Naturalist, Demos Days, Kids Fest, Fundraisers and more are on the schedule until they close. Closing weekend is a like the finale to a fireworks display. Monarch’s signature event, Kayaks on Snow is a head to head race, similar to Skier Cross but in Kayaks, down a specially designed course featuring berms, banks, and bumps, ending in an icy pond! Cool Home TownAs mentioned before Monarch Mountain is a 15 to 20 minute drive from Salida. If you have not visited there recently we highly recommend you check out their shopping and dining district along with the Arkansas River. So many new and unique shops have popped up along with restaurants, distilleries and breweries. Amicas Pizza & Micro-Brewery and Elevation Brewing Company are two prize winning breweries, Woods Distillery has some great whiskey, try The Fritz for dinner. There are killer coffee shops and fun clothing boutiques to browse through. This area is known as the Rocky Mountain “banana belt” and offers the classic Colorado opportunity to ski in the morning and bike, hike, kayak, raft or golf in the afternoon. The Chaffee County motto is “Now this is Colorado” – yes it is. Take your friends and family to Monarch Mountain with plans to have a whole bunch of fun, they will thank you.

I-70 Here We Go Again >>Beginning this March the Westbound I-70 Twin Tunnels project will

begin widening the westbound bore of the tunnel in Idaho Springs to about 53-feet. This will accommodate a third lane along westbound

I-70 when the highway is eventually widened. Unlike the recent work done along eastbound I-70 to add a third highway lane from Idaho

Springs to the bottom of Floyd Hill, this project will only widen the tunnel to accommodate a future third lane. It does not include

expanding westbound I-70 to three lanes at this time. Estimated completion time is December 2014. Stay in tuned and in touch.

I love when I find an item that I think isn’t going to work and then discover that I was wrong after the whole concept of the particular item unfolds and reveals itself. This past fall I received a brilliant green bag made by Lilypond. It was a part of their upcoming 2014 line of products. The Morning Shadow backpack in Meadow Grass was lovely and reminded me of spring and it appeared to be what I was looking for, a bag I could carry or wear as a backpack.

First appearances lead me to believe that this was a most unique item. The back straps crossed over the top of the bag’s opening and I felt it might hinder placing and retrieving items from the internal compartments. I fiddled with it and discovered the top would open right up, and placing items in and taking them out was not a problem at all. It would fit my laptop, notebooks and documents with plenty of room to spare. In addition to the large internal space the bag has a spacious interior pocket that closes with Velcro and becomes a sealed location for important items. I like how I can place an entire file folder in this protected area and it will not wrinkle or get dirty. Once you have loaded the bag up there is a zipper to close the top sealing out nasty stuff the environment might bring in.

The straps are adjustable and you can wear the bag like a traditional back pack or you can throw one strap over your shoulder and carry it comfortably too. There is also a smaller handle grip on the backside of the bag so you can pick it up and carry like a tote.

On the front outside of the bag there is a large zippered compartment for easy access to whatever item you think you need to grab quickly. I use it for pens, business cards, my cell phone and some light weight gloves. This is not a bag for traditional backpacking but I have used it skiing, hiking, to business appointments, for groceries, working out, picnics and as an overnight bag on short trips away. For all I have put it through it is still clean. It sheds water and dirt nicely.

It’s spring, a time when Colorado mountain town folk begin to think about where they stashed their camping gear and items for the upcoming season of travel and outdoor fun. For some of us we love to camp way out in our tents, for others we love having the convenience and shelter of a camper. This couple who live in Glenwood Springs love to travel and camp. The company they built has been based on a passion for restoration and an inspiration from seeing others who had converted old, beat up trailers into refurbished fun travel abodes.Meet Vicky and Richard Nash. Richard is a Home Builder by trade and loves to restore old cars. Vicky is a vivacious woman who was inspired by a group of women who had been restoring their old trailers with unique materials, finishes, murals and accessories. Eleven years ago Vicky and Richard married and two years into their wedded bliss Vicky decided to move forward with her dream and purchased a dilapidated 1962 Travel Trailer. Through Richards extensive knowledge of building they stripped the camper down to its studs and rebuilt, paying attention to every detail that had made the original release of the camper so spectacular. Vicky color coordinated the interior and exterior and when

they were done they had a prize winning travel trailer that caught the attention of everyone who saw it.Richard is a classic car collector and restoration is his hobby. Palisade says “life tastes good here all year long” and we agree, especially in the springtime. Palisade is a great place to spend some time as the weather warms, especially if you like to ski one day and bike or hike the next. US Ski Racer Danelle Umstead

Has What It Takes To Strike Gold

When you think about world-class athletes, certain qualities come to mind. Determination is one of them. So is persistence. Talent certainly plays a factor, as does drive. In the case of Danelle Umstead, a five-discipline alpine skier on the World Cup circuit, these are the words her coaches and friends use to describe her. They also use one more. Blind.

Skiing Changes a Life

When Danelle Umstead was 13 she received a shattering diagnosis. She had retinitis pigmentosa, a genetic eye condition that would remove her vision.An optimistic person, whose friends describe her as “fun and bubbly,” Danelle didn’t dwell much on this time in her life when we spoke. She did share however, that by the time she was 28 years old, in 2000, she was in a really bad place.

She’d recently lost her mother to cancer. She’d been forced to retire from her job and her vision was becoming even worse. Then one day, her father called her and invited her to ski. Danelle had never skied before. Her father had only one season of experience. So together they learned to ski, and dad learned how to guide his daughter.

“Skiing transformed my life,” explains Danelle. “It helped me go from one extreme to the other.” Skiing also transformed her father’s life. The family moved to Taos, New Mexico to facilitate their new passion. Today, Danelle’s father is a ski instructor. And his daughter is a world-class athlete.

A Natural Athlete

“My first recollection of Danelle was in 2006 at the Ski Spectacular in Park City,” recounts Ray Watkins, Danelle’s coach and a member of the Paralympic Alpine Skiing National Team staff.“I remember seeing a very talented visually impaired athlete. I took her out and guided her for a few runs. She was super athletic, extremely driven and a perfectionist. She had all the traits necessary to be a great athlete.” When Danelle met Watkins, she’d been skiing for six years. She’d begun ski racing just one year earlier, when she and her husband Rob, a professional ski coach, relocated to Park City, Utah. Finding herself in the same town as both the U.S. Ski Team and the National Ability Center, a respected adaptive sports program located at Park City Mountain Resort, it seemed only natural to try racing.As a visually impaired ski racer, Danelle needed a partner. Visually impaired racers work in teams, with the sighted member of the team preceding the blind athlete down the racecourse, racing through the gates themselves while providing on-the-fly feedback about the course and conditions via two-way radios. Danelle’s first guide was Sally Tauber, a Masters racer who’d stepped back from competition because of injuries. In addition to being a talented ski racer herself, Sally has a degree in therapeutic recreation and had taught blind skiers in the past. At first, she didn’t want to be Danelle’s guide. “I was tired. I was injured. I just wasn’t excited about guiding someone,” Tauber explains. “But Danelle was so persistent, so energetic and fun to be around that I couldn’t help but get over myself and show up.”

“She was infectious.”

Headed For Sochi

Danelle’s determination paid off. Not only did Tauber become her partner, but during their first year of racing, they won two bronze medals at the U.S. Disabled Nationals. Based on these results, Danelle made the U.S. Paralympic Team and began training at the National Sports Center for the Disabled in Winter Park, Colorado. Since Tauber wasn’t able to relocate, Rob became his wife’s guide and race partner.

Together, the Umsteads are one of the strongest visually impaired alpine teams headed to Sochi. Qualifying in all five alpine events – slalom, giant slalom, Super G, downhill and Super Combined – they are looking to better the two bronze medals they won at the Vancouver Paralympic Games four years ago.

“We’ve learned a lot over the years about working as a team. Our goal is to ski our very best as a team and if we get to the top of the podium, that is fantastic. We want to leave it all out there and do our best and be proud of what we’ve done,” shares Danelle.

Trust is Fundamental

Trust is a big part of Danelle and Rob’s success. Husband and wife, parents and ski racing partners, they have to have good communication and unquestioning trust.For Danelle, trust is a way of life. “I have to depend upon others to be my eyes and give me verbal clues.”

“When we’re racing, I have to put my trust in Rob and know that he’ll give me the information I need to get down the hill as fast as I possibly can.” In addition to Danelle and Rob, Team Umstead includes their six year-old son Brocton, senior guide dog Bettylyn and their new guide dog, Aziza.

“Brocton thinks were the best skiers in the world,” laughs Danelle. “He makes life so easy. While we’re working hard on the hill to improve our trust and communication, off the hill he makes us laugh and smile. He makes it all worth it.”

It’s A Gift

Talking with Danelle, its quickly apparent that she has a great sense of humor. She’s able to laugh at herself and to joke about her vision. She comes across as personable and fun. Or as her coach, Ray Watkins puts it, “Everybody wants to be around Danelle. She’s a super cool person.” For those who haven’t been challenged in life by illness or disability, it’s hard to believe that she’s had not one, but two, potentially devastating diagnoses. On October 2010, Danelle woke up one morning to find

herself paralyzed on her right side. Although doctors initially thought she’d suffered a stroke, it turned out to be Multiple Sclerosis.Not only could Danelle not move, but before she could ski again, she had to learn how to walk again. Within one month, she was back on skis, following an intense regimen of physical therapy, steroid injections and discipline. She says that it “wasn’t pretty,” but clicking into her bindings and sliding on snow proved to her how much she loves ski racing.

“Life is a gift and living it is a choice. I want to live my life to the fullest. Anything that stands in my way will not tear me down.”

All the Necessary Qualities, Plus More

Clearly Danelle is driven, persistent, talented and determined. She has all the attributes it takes to be at the top of her game as a ski racer. She’s also a wife and a mom. She’s blind and she has MS. She’s optimistic and bubbly, the person everyone wants to be around. She’s a super cool person.And hopefully, after Sochi, she will also be golden. Guanaja, Honduras

Fly Fish Guanaja

I write from the deck of the Fly Fish Guanja lodge, a small private island that sits over the South Keys in Guanaja, Honduras, right in the middle of the flats. I am continually distracted by the sounds of bonefish, permit, trigger fish, box fish, sharks, and jacks crashing through the water.

I look up from my computer scanning the flats, seeing the fish, confirming my small place in this large world as I feel like a speck in the middle of nowhere, a beautiful nowhere. The rhythmic pounding of the surf hits the edge of where the flats drop into the Caribbean Sea. The view is like no other, shades of white sand in the flats of the shallow water fades into turtle grass that fades into coral that fades into the deep blue sea, an open canvass of infinite possibility, and for now, peace. A pelican watches me write, then sees a fish and descends upon the water. A gentle breeze licks my body.

Guanaja is an overlooked Carribean Island off of the Coast of Honduras that is still recovering from the ravages of Hurricane Mitch. This storm blew right over the island and then liked it so much it stayed for two days, destroying almost everything the native people on this island owned. The stories of heroism and survival told by each staff member I met are unbelievable. The perseverance of the people to rebuild is admirable. The main island rises out of the sea and has several small towns. There are no cars on the main island and the largest town, Bonacaa, is a smaller island with a maze of canals in between all of the buildings.

Diving is spectacular. The island’s warm, clear waters support an extensive coral reef that is part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef and second only to the Great Barrier Reef off the

coasts of Australia. Bo’s Island House offers diving trips at his North Side resort, near Michael’s Rock. Bo himself will take you diving on the small dive boat, while his wife and daughters prepare your meals. Close by is the fabulous waterfall trail where you will find beautiful foliage and a foot path to one of the islands large fresh water waterfalls.

Back at the lodge you will find the guest house loaded with comfortable rooms, a large kitchen, nice bathrooms, giant deck, and a private beach. The lodge can comfortably accommodate 4 – 6 people. This small Cay is a vacation home that has been turned into a an intimate full service lodge.

Space Planning Tips for Smaller Homes

There are a multitude of storage solutions you can purchase. More often those items don’t fit where you intended or they just shuffle one stack from “here” to “there”. Space planning can help. Remodeling your limited space with the intention to maximize its use not only makes the interior more valuable per square foot, it also helps you function more easily. For instance, a bed usually consists of a frame, box springs and a mattress. Under the frame is typically a cluster of shallow boxes filled with forgotten things, not to mention the collection of dust bunnies.

Mountain resort communities as well as downtown urban lofts offer a variety of benefits to help us live life to the fullest. However, these structures we refer to as home don’t always provide us with ample square footage to live comfortably; entertain friends and family or store our vast array of recreational equipment and seasonal clothing.

You can add up to 66 cubic foot of storage under a queen mattress if you replace the frame and box springs with a platform. Furthermore, you have enhanced your health by eliminating the popular breeding ground for dust bunnies. Another opportunity for maximizing your limited space is wardrobe cabinetry. Framed closets are another poorly designed storage area in most small homes. Gain space by removing the framing around your closet and installing floor to ceiling cabinets. An 8’ wide closet with a 6’ door typically offers 8 foot of rod space and an 8’ shelf. The standard interior of the closet is 2’ deep and 8’ tall. Total storage space is 128 cubic feet. Total access is 40 square feet. Anything stored beyond the opening is in a proverbial world of MIA! Even if you have a great closet organizer system, you can’t reach the items past the door opening. The framed walls around this closet are taking 5” of depth from the room. Imagine removing the walls, door and header. Then, install tall cabinets with a variety of storage features. A well designed wall system in the same space can provide 12-13 feet of rod space a few drawers for foldable clothes and specialty storage for other items. The 5” depth of the (removed) wall is returned to the room, allowing the occupants to have more elbow room. Now you have 100% access to all of your belongings. No items are lost behind inaccessible areas. The room looks great, functions well and is easier to manage. Every room in your home can benefit from space planning and simple remodeling. Don’t be afraid if the plan becomes a big remodel. It will be worth the time and effort for years to come.

It was once said “that gardening at altitude was next to impossible”. Over and over again I heard “good luck” but I was stubborn and found a nice sheltered area in the yard, scratched at and improved the soil and yielded some fine herbs and greens. I tried tomatoes but at 10,000ft I found them challenging. With time and patience I have had some good success with a variety of vegetables. It is time again to start planning what I will grow. Every year I keep finding more and more people growing some really great and unique produce, especially in all of the community gardens that are springing up.You don’t have a good area to start your own garden patch? are available these days are really amazing. I was very impressed with Crested Butte and Gunnison County’s Mountain Roots Food Project. The Mountain Roots Food Project is an amazing organization working to cultivate a community that is healthy and self-sufficient as a whole. They work to create personal, social, and environmental change through Sustainable Agriculture. In Gunnison Valley, they are exploring different ways for people to grow food together. The group has found gardens strengthen community bonds, provide food, and create recreational and therapeutic opportunities for the community. The Mountain Roots Food Project promotes environmental awareness and provides community education. They have

Community Gardens, Demonstration Gardens, Giving Gardens, Living Classrooms and more. When you’re in Crested Butte seek out the Elk Avenue Demonstration Garden and see for yourself.Looking for a Rental patch? Check with your town. Silverthorne, Breckenridge and Frisco have great opportunities. Chaffee County, Routt County, Grand County, Glenwood Springs, Rifle, Telluride and other Colorado mountain towns have programs you can participate in. Can’t find anything? Check with your local Colorado State University Extension program to see where you can find your little patch of paradise. The time to plant the seed is now; there is a lot to grow out there and a lot of places to grow it.

There was a time when the skateboard parks in our towns consisted of a few lame rails, a ramp and maybe a small bowl. Towns and recreation districts have taken note of the popularity of the sport and have jumped on the concrete wave. A recent revamp of the Steamboat Springs skatepark has come to fruition and is extraordinarily popular with both local kids and adults. This is a sport for everyone.The old park by Howelsen Hill is now history and the new concrete park located on the western side of town on Shields Road is a tremendous new location with a great bowl from 5’ to 9’ with metal coping and pool coping and a spine. There is a good street area with pyramid and pole jam. The skateboard community there is stoked and is looking forward to future projects and expansions.Other towns are following suit. Over the past few years Edwards, Kremmling, Winter Park and Fairplay have added

skateboarding to their list of recreational opportunities. Carbondale is huge with a 14,000 sq. ft. park available to skate. Breckenridge is preparing to break ground on a new Team Pain designed park this summer.I have found two great resources to check to see the skateboard parks in our towns. Coloradoskateboardguide.com has great panoramas of each skate park in the state along with information on area contests, events and local shops in the area. CoSkate.com is another solid resource with competition info, videos, skateboard company links, park reviews and more. Once more spring proves to be that great time of year when you can get out and do everything.

MTN Art Art Shows in Area Cafes are a Hit

Area coffee shops have always been a gathering place. These days they are offering more than Coffee. Cuppa Joe in Breckenridge opened their doors for an Exhibit featuring the works of Jennifer Cram. On most days when Cuppa Joe coffee shop in Breckenridge is steaming up a delicious coffee folks are quietly seated chatting, working, and reading. On this night the shop came alive with greetings and exclamations on the beautiful artwork gracing the shops walls. No longer just a coffee house, shop owner Johanna Hirschboeck’s space was transformed into a gallery exhibiting local artist Jennifer Cram’s beautiful sculpture.It is not unusual these days for local coffee shops to open their doors for a special event, especially art. Cuppa Joe goes out their way to assist emerging artists in showcasing their work. On this evening Sculptress Jennifer Cram filled a large portion of this bright open space with delightful little ceramic butterflies

presented within several different installments. Her wish was to allow the viewer to find joy in something as simple as a butterfly. Cram’s love and passion is installations and the transformation of a space to reflect the artwork being shown. A Landscape Architect and Fine Artist by trade; Jennifer has been making things since she was a young girl. Print making and ceramic sculpture work is her forte with 20 years of experience making art and managing artists and studios. A Breckenridge local, Cram began with the town as a planner; she has since grown the public art program and the arts district for the Town of Breckenridge and is now Manager of the Breckenridge Arts District and Public Art Program. She is assisting in the evolution of the Breckenridge Culture Arts Division and its new campus that is currently under construction. www.jennifercram.wordpress.com

A taste of old Mexico graces the mountain town of Avon just below Beaver Creek Resort. Maya, in the Westin Riverfront Resort & Spa, is one of 20 different Latin-inspired restaurants in the portfolio of Chef Richard Sandoval.

Maya is his first concept of the “Modern Mexican Kitchen” he opened in New York City in 1997; since then, his empire has spread throughout the world. Mexican-born Sandoval learned the biz from his restaurateur father, but the flavors of his childhood wafting from his grandmother’s kitchen influenced him most. This surprising little restaurant on North F Street, Downtown Salida, cooks up handmade authentic Asian cuisine. Hot Pho with a flavorful yet delicate broth, lovely noodles and fresh vegetables is what brought me back. Their menu and daily specials make you wish you had more then one stomach. During the next 50 years we are facing water challenges unlike any we have seen in the last 400 years in the west. How we adapt with these challenges is up to us and will reflect what our values are and where our priorities are going. There will be many strategies involved and many new novel approaches to conserving a valuable resource that 36 million Americans can’t exist without. Will unrestrained population, energy and economic growth continue? Or will we begin to plan and adapt on a broad urban and energy scale, adapting to the finite resources which every other living thing on the planet is ultimately limited by? Each year, on average we have a 1.2 million acre foot deficit in the Colorado River Basin. To understand this amount think of 5 completely full Dillon Reservoirs. That is the amount of water that we are annually using, but is not replenished in the Colorado River Basin. Now add reliable forecasts in Climate Change. Read on: As a result of climate change, the mean annual runoff in the Colorado River Basin is projected to decrease by 8.5% by 2050. In the future, this will have wide ranging effects on how we use and manage water from eastern Colorado all the way to Mexico. For positive changes to happen it is up to us to decide in the next 20, 50 and 100 years, using the tools we have, intelligent urban planning, water conservation and realistic population limits that relate to actual resource availability. Perhaps the best way to approach this challenge is to think of what we would like to leave our children and how much do we really need to be happy with our lives. Ironically cities like Las Vegas are doing the best job of conservation at the moment. We are not far behind with regard to living in a limited resource environment and will need to take notes if we want a sustainable water future that balances our needs with the natural river systems of the Colorado River Basin.
