MTC Book on Aerospace Materials

• Background– Title: Aerospace Materials and Applications– Specifically tailored to meet the needs of aerospace applications– Shows the preferred approach to selecting and using materials in the

design and construction of aerospace systems. – Focuses on materials in aircrafts, spacecrafts, and launch vehicles

structures and materials in air breathing and rocket propulsion systems. – Serves as a textbook for upper undergraduate or beginning graduate

level course in aerospace materials engineering and also for continuing education courses on aerospace materials and applications, which can be taught at AIAA conferences.

– Serve as a guidebook for practicing aerospace engineers– Materials, Design and Manufacturing

• Approach– Multiple authors for each chapter – lead and supporting

• Subject matter experts– Editorial panels for review– Web based – AIAA Share Point– Information sharing

MTC Book : Progress Report (since May 2009)

• Book Proposal:– Grant Henson from Structures Committee contributed the

second chapter needed for the proposal: Chapter 7 – Materials for Launch Vehicle Structures

– Completed work on book proposal for submittal to AIAA using Chapter 5 (Materials for Aircraft Structures) and Chapter 7 as sample chapters (Dec 2009)

• Bil Bhat as chief editor and Leo Daniel as co-editor– Proposal submitted to AIAA in the first week of January 2010– Heather Brennan/AIAA Publications acknowledged the receipt

of proposal– Proposal had to wait for a new acquisitions editor since Dan

Gafaro had resigned– David Arthur took over as the new acquisitions editor in March

2010 – Feedback expected in April 2010

MTC Book: Progress Report (Cont’d.)

• Book Chapters:

– Each chapter has one lead author and several supporting authors– all are subject matter experts

– Mike Weimer to lead Chapter 2 - Materials Selection for Aerospace Systems

– Brian Wardle to lead Chapter 4 - Advanced Nanoengineered Materials

– Formed a team to write Chapter 6 – Materials in Spacecraft . Team members will include people from MSFC (Mary Nehls, Dewitt Burns) and Alan Tribble, space environments and effects subject matter expert

– Grant Henson (from Structures Committee) contributed Chapter 7 – Materials for Launch Vehicle Structures

– Negotiating with John Halchak (Pratt & Whitney – Rocketdyne) to write chapters 9 & 12

– Looking for more authors

• Editing:

– Gary Seidel has created a Share Point site for uploading book chapters and facilitate editing

– Access will limited to authors, editors, and subcommittee members

– Two chapters are uploaded and ready for review and comments – Editorial Board is in place

• Editorial panels will be used to review chapters– The editing work has just begun– The Share Point site is expected to get busy as more chapters

are uploaded

Next Steps

• The book proposal approval by AIAA• Recruit more authors

– More authors are needed, especially in propulsion area– Need help from everyone to contact potential

candidates• Complete writing the chapters – ongoing work• Review/edit chapters

– Form editorial panels for different chapters– Fully utilize the AIAA Share Point website

• Submit manuscript to AIAA • Publish the book in time for 52nd SDM Conference• Schedule
