Just letting you know that the travelling Thieles
are still getting in plenty of riding even though we
are travelling in the "Tin top". We made a beeline
for Mildura to pick up our much missed
motorcycles. We arrived on the afternoon of
Mildura Branches monthly meeting. No one knew
we were coming, so we snuck in to town, only to
be caught out by one of the couple's we got to
know during our volunteering. It was great to
catch up with everyone again, we feel like
members of their branch. Ross being the shy little
flower that he is got up at the meeting & implored
Mildura members to make the trip to the 2013
Fraser Coast AGM.
The timing couldn't have been better, Mildura's
monthly branch ride was on the Sunday after we
arrived, so, not to let a chance for ride go by, we
joined the twelve other bikes (14 bikes, 17 people
in all) for the jaunt around the district. We made
our way down to Hattah & the Lock at Robinvale
& onto The Euston Club for lunch. 223k's for the
day, not as many turns as at home, but a lot more
than we were expecting in the Murray. We made
our way home via Gol Gol & Buronga.
We enjoyed the ride so much that we revisited
some of the places over the next few days. We
also headed to Pooncarie with one of our new
found "Friends" from Mildura. This was a great
day out as well, Approx 300k's 3 bikes (no
pillions) we headed north to Pooncarie via
Fletchers lake & back via Wentworth, after
visiting the old Pooncarie Wharf & having lunch
at the Pooncarie Hotel & onto Bob's for coffee.
We had entertainment at lunch, there were a
couple of back packers who unfortunately had
written off their car in the area & were waiting for
"the local bus" to take them back to town. The
Publican had a bit of trouble with communication,
but obviously managed to get the point across, as
we were leaving town, we passed a taxi from
Wentworth ( only 120k's ) I'm glad we weren't
paying that fare.
After spending some time in the Riverlands,
Torrens Valley & Adelaide Hills, we are now

get the bikes out again.

On the 9th
May, Lyn, Margie, Tiger, Chris and I
[Bruce W] left the River Cruise café and headed
to Gin Gin where Bruce S joined us for our trip to
Theodore. The first stop was Mt Perry. The next
leg to Ceradotus was windy in places and of
course there were two caravans doing what they
do best and that is going slow so they can take in
all the scenery. We passed him in various stages,
but Chris had some excitement getting around
them, He can tell the story the best. Ceradotus rail
siding was worth the stop, just for the history.
After fuelling at Monto we had lunch at a typical
country style café. Monto people are very
friendly.
With the Spyder in the lead it was Theodore here
we come. After booking into the motel we
checked out the bar and I caught up with a few old
friends. Thursday we headed 30km west to Isla
George to take in the scenery, where upon I told a
few stories about bush rangers hide outs and how
the park was transformed into formal dinner with
a string quartet and fashion parade to raise money
for the RFDA, and then back to Theodore and east
to Cracow for lunch which turned out to be either
pies or sandwiches, I’m glad I had a sanger.
Friday Margie and Tiger headed home through
Cracow. The remaining crew went the back way
through the mine to Moura, and watched a
dragline and some dump trucks working. I left the
group there to travel to Koumala. I would like
thank you all for the most pleasant company on
the ride back to my home town.
Cheers,
Bruce Watson.

Seniors at a McDonalds
A group of seniors were sitting around talking
about all their ailments at a Port Orange
McDonalds on a Sunday Morning.
"My arms have gotten so weak I can hardly lift
this cup of coffee," said one.
"Yes, I know," said another. "My cataracts are
so bad; I can't even see my coffee.
""I couldn't even mark an "X" at election time;
my hands are so crippled," volunteered a third.
"What? Speak up! What? I can't hear you!""I
can't turn my head because of the arthritis in
my neck," said a fourth, to which several
nodded weakly in agreement.
"My blood pressure pills make me so dizzy!"
exclaimed another.
"I forget where I am, and where I'm going,"
said another.
"I guess that's the price we pay for getting old,"
winced an old man as he slowly shook his head.
The others nodded in agreement.
"Well, count your Blessings," said a tall man
cheerfully - - "thank God we can all still ride
our motorcycles."

We met at River Cruz as normal and it was
decided to go to Biggenden with Phil leading and
Allan W as tail end Charlie. There were six bikes
and one Lady pillion passenger. We went through
town to Goodwood road then turning on to Foley
road. Then on to Farnsfield road to Knockroe road
thru to Isis Mill road, then on to North South Road
and stopping at Dallarnil for our normal small
break.
While there we decided to go straight to where the
Gargoyle is so that those of us who hadn't seen it
could see it after which we had lunch at a hotel.
After lunch we went to Booyal where two turned
off towards Gin Gin.
The rest of us had the usual break and some ice
creams after which we headed home going by
Adies Road past Isis Mill and Cordalba after
which we found our individual ways home. It was
a very enjoyable ride and we were able to stay
together as a group most of the way.
Allan W.
I was invited to ride to Biggenden to view a
private collection of motorcycles owned by Alan
Cunningham. 5 bikes rode from Bucca through
Wallaville, Booyal, Coringa, to Biggenden,
gathering at Alan's around 10am.
Most of you will have read Col O's report in the
April newsletter regarding this collection,
including the huge gargoyle out the front, which
unfortunately has relocated to Gladstone.
The bikes however are all still there, 46 Douglas
motorcycles in various stages of restoration, the
last Southern Cross Motorcycle of only 4 ever
built, along with of thousands of other pieces of
memorabilia running through the whole alphabet,
Aircraft, Bikes, Cars, Dairy items, Engines, Forge
bellows and so on and so on. It's truly an amazing
place with everywhere you turn there's more stuff
than you can poke a stick at.
I have been in contact with Alan since then and
have arranged for our branch members to ride out
to Biggenden on Sunday 1st July to have a look.
8.30 am leave time. There are a maximum number
of people that can view the collection at any one
time so if you would like to go you MUST LET

ME KNOW ASAP. Alan is happy to answer any
questions about his little museum, and bring your
camera. I took about 200 photos and didn’t come
close to seeing everything. Afterwards we'll “do
lunch “at the Grand Hotel, then ride home through
some back roads.

The normal gathering at the River Cruz for coffee
and gossip. There were a few non starters for the
days ride due to illness or other commitments. In
the end only seven bikes willing to go for a run. It
was suggested that Toogoom was a good
destination as we had not been there for a while.
This suited us as nobody was interested in a long
run. Fred A volunteered to be ride leader and Alan
W was Tail End Charlie. The route was
Goodwood Road to the Bruce Highway and then
to Howard for a stop for morning tea. A short run
to Toogoom where Lyn took us to the pub for
lunch. A nice meal ensued with a pleasant outlook
over the bay. The plan was to stop at Sticky Beaks
café on the way home for coffee, however the
shop was closed so it was straight home to Bundy.
A good ride with no dramas.
Brian M
Ten bloody degrees - who in their right mind
would go 120km for a BBQ, halfway up a bloody
mountain in 10 bloody degrees. Well, there was a
few of us and we enjoyed it immensely.
Net and I left a little early, with the intention of
getting to Mt Walsh National Park and ensuring
that the BBQs were still working and that they
were clean. Unfortunately, when we arrived, the
BBQs were unserviceable and we opted for "Plan
B". "Plan B" was to use the double BBQ at the
Lions Park near the servo in Biggenden.
That left Owen to lead the ride from River Cruz
via Farnsfield to Biggenden with 16 bikes (6 with
pillions). After a small hiccup with a broken
clutch cable and a change of bikes, the main group
arrived at the servo in Biggenden, where 3 riders
pealed off to do their own thing. Net and I caught
up with the main group at the servo, explained the
BBQ problem, then set up at the Lions Park.
Lunch was cooked, coffee/a light beer were drunk
and we had a good chin wag in warm sunny
weather. Then a couple of the ladies decided they
didn't like their ages anymore so they started
playing on the swings, but it got worse from there
when one woman tried the slippery dip. LOL, the
poor bugger nearly got stuck on the top of the
ladder cause she was wider than the top of the
slide. Bugger

After lunch, everyone went up to the National
Park to have a look and then Owen led the way
across North Dallarnil to the Paradise Dam Rd
then to Wallaville and home.
It was a very good day and everyone enjoyed the
lunch and the ride. Thanks to Owen for leading,
Kevin for tail ending. I would also like to thank all
those that turned up for the BBQ because you
made it all worthwhile.

There were only six loyal riders to brave the
forecast today, but the bravery subsided as the
weather got worse the further south we went.
We were on our way to Paradise Dam for smoko
but turned around after a brief discussion on the
tomato hill near the Isis mill and all optied for
lunch in the warm surroundings of the RSL Club
in Bundaberg. It was an enjoyable atmosphere,
company & lunch was great. Thanks everyone.

Sometimes only a picture can get our attention!
Her last call was from a new mobile phone...
Do you see the motorcycle?
Now do you see it?
The Honda crotch rocket rider was travelling at
approximately 85 mph. The VW driver was
talking on a mobile phone when she pulled out
from a side street, apparently not seeing the
motorcycle. The riders’ reaction time was not
sufficient enough to avoid this accident. The car
had two passengers and the bike rider was found
INSIDE the car with them.
The Volkswagen actually flipped over from the
force of impact and landed 20 feet from where the
collision took place. All three involved (two in the
car and the bike rider) were killed instantly. This
graphic demonstration was placed at the
Motorcycle Fair by the Police and Road Safety
Department. Pass this on to car drivers or soon to
be new drivers, or new motorcycle owners.

Sympathy Thanks from Old No.1’s
Daughter
Alexa Brown
It's difficult to put into words how I feel about
all the support & love that has been offered to
myself & my extended family by the Ulysses
'family' upon the death of my father, Stephen
Dearnley.
So many cards & emails from various branches
as well as individuals that knew & loved him
personally. Thank you so very very much, it
has been truly wonderful. I wish that I could sit
down & write to you all but there are just too
many to respond to, so please accept my
apologies for not doing this. I'm aware that I
have already met a number of you & hope that
in the future I will have the opportunity to
personally meet more folks who have been so
impacted by 'Ulysses'.
There has certainly been a large gap in our
lives with Stephen no longer here but it's
people like yourselves that help heal wounds.
Both the family service of celebration & the
thanksgiving service at the AGM at Mildura
were wonderful events to celebrate Dad's life
which he would have loved if he was here! I
know the heart of Ulysses runs deep in so
many members & we will continue to carry
with us so much that the Ulysses Club
represents.
Many stories have already been told to me
about Stephen which have not only been
entertaining but enlightening! Feel free to write
them down so that my over 50's brain can
retain them! I'm sure the team at admin will be
happy to receive them on my behalf! Or maybe
there's another Ulyssian story (good one of
course!) that you think myself & maybe others
would like to hear.
So thank you again for all your condolences &
love & I look forward to having some chat time
… at one time or another.
With Love, Alexa 25511
About The Ulysses Club
How it all began
The Ulysses Club for older motorcyclists, the
largest organization of it's kind in Australia, is
now a familiar part of this country's riding
scene. The original suggestion for a club for
over 50's motorcyclists was put forward in a
letter by Stephen Dearnley published in the
August 1983 issue of Bike Australia.
Stephen had initially responded to some
comments by 'Wrench McTaggart', aka Grant
Roff, who had suggested to an over 50's rider;
"Hasn't anyone ever told you about growing
old gracefully ..."
This drew two significant responses: one from
Rob Hall, a reader at Albion Park NSW, who
suggested the present name and motto for the
club: the other from Peter Thoeming, then the
editor of Bike Australia who sketched the logo
and offered support from his magazine if
Stephen could get the club off the ground. This
was done at an inaugural meeting in Sydney on
6th December, 1983 when the five people
present approved a basic constitution and the
Ulysses Club was duly formed.
From that tenuous beginning it has never
looked back and the club now boasts a large
and extensive network of members throughout
Australia.
Why Ulysses
The name comes from a poem of the same title
by Alfred, Lord Tennyson. It tells how the
great Greek hero Ulysses, now middle-aged
and securely in charge of his kingdom of
Ithaca, is getting bored with things around him
and longs to go adventuring again with his
shipmates of old. It describes very well indeed
the sort of person who still has enough spark to
go on riding into middle and later years. Too
long to quote here, you will find it in any good
poetry anthology such as the Albatross Book of
Verse.

Ulysses Club Inc.
Bundaberg Branch
Minutes of Meeting – 5th June 2012
Welcome: Owen welcomed all. There were around 23 members present for the night.
Apologies: Apologies from Peter & Marg Drummond, David & June Mell, Ian Voigt, Ross & Bev
Thiele, Chris and Sheryl Pusey, Kevin Kime and Tony Olsen
Ross and Bev Thiele called from the Nullarbor Roadhouse, and mentioned that they should be back in
November (lucky sods).
Welfare Report: Marg Drummond is home from hospital and getting around on a battery operated
scooter. Peter told Owen that she was having some trouble getting used to the controls (backed into the
wall).
Raffle: Mick Saunders sold $56 of raffle tickets for a half pot prize ($28) that was won by Bruce
Savage. Congratulations Bruce.
Correspondence: The correspondence this month included a newsletter from St George Sutherland
Branch, the Ulysses Constitution, the extended NatCom report, and the 2012 Mildura AGM minutes.
Members can also login and view the Ulysses constitution online at the Ulysses Australia website.
Everyone is welcome to read through any correspondence received by the branch at any time.
Financial Report: We have a bank balance of $1333.00
Shirts Patches and Badges
Name badges are available from Bundaberg Trophies Electra St, at $10 each. We also have branch
patches on hand, cost of $8 each. Jill has 2 branch shirts left, 2xS, at $30 each.
Newsletter Subscriptions: Subscriptions are again $20 for 2012. See Jill to ensure your subscription is
up-to-date.
Dennis mentioned that the newsletter needs more contributions from members each month, and more
subscribers to make it viable. The alternative may well be a bi-monthly newsletter, but we will continue
in our current form at least till the end of this subscription period.
Website: Bill still has some issues with the website, but the photos of trips are now up-to-date, as well
as some early newsletters now on the website (April & May of 06).
New Rides: Neil Cook surprised us all with the purchase of a new 2012 Suzuki DL650AV-Strom. Still
has the Goldwing, but now he can tackle all of the dirt roads in the area as well now.

Ride Reports: Bruce Watson gave a brief report on Theodore trip – see newsletter for full story.
Ian Lawley gave a run down on the Mt. Walsh National Park ride; again see the newsletter for a full
report.
For a full roundup of all rides, check the ride reports in this newsletter.
General Business: A discussion took place involving the “Thursday Ride group” about changing the
departure time from 10.00am to 9.30am. This would allow for slightly longer sides, or time for
sightseeing. It was decided that a vote would be taken next Thursday morning (7th
June) at the River
Cruz cafe, and that Owen would advise all RCR members via email.
The above also prompted some discussion about the Sunday rides; whether they should stay as is, or
should they vary (long and short, some dirt and no dirt, earlier and later departures). Owen suggested to
Dennis that we rerun the “suggested proposed rides” form again on the back of this newsletter.
Lyn Richter had brochures from the Kingfisher Court apartments at Hervey Bay, for those members
who may not want to stay “on-site” for next year’s Fraser Coast AGM.
Ride Calendar Ahead:

The Sum
A little Johnny was doing his math homework. He said to himself, "Two plus five, that son of a bitch is
seven. Three plus six, that son of a bitch is nine...." His mother heard what he was saying and asked,
"What are you doing?" The little boy answered, "I'm doing my math homework, Mom." "And this is
how your teacher taught you to do it?" the mother asked. "Yes," he answered. Infuriated, the mother
asked the teacher the next day, "What are you teaching my son in math?" The teacher replied, "Right
now, we are learning addition."The mother asked, "And are you teaching them to say two plus two, that
son of a bitch is four?"After the teacher stopped laughing, she answered, "What I taught them was, two
plus two, THE SUM OF WHICH, is four."
